CM PRESS # 652

Survival of the fittest is one of those expressions that most people don't understand.

When they hear it, they often think it means the best, the strongest, the smartest, the fastest.

Look around you at all the humans you can see. Do they all look like the best, the strongest, the smartest and the fastest? Of course not. But, they are the fittest. This is so because they are alive today. That's all it takes to be the fittest--be alive in the present generation.

But there is a twist to this. Fittest is ultimately defined backwards. The truly fittest are the parents of those alive today. This is so, because those parents produced children who survived into this generation.

We can thus say of every person living today, that his or her parents were the fittest. If they weren't, you wouldn't be here.

So, all of us alive today are only putatively the fittest. We will not be the fittest unless and until we produce children who survive into the next generation.

Those who do not produce children are dead ends. They become extinct. Their particular genes will be no more. Hundreds of thousands of generations led to them, and ends with them.

And, there is more to this. By survival, we do not really mean the survival of the individual, but the survival of the individual's genotype (the internal code or blueprint) carried within that we inherit from our parents and which spins the phenotype (the way we look).
