The CM PRESS has seen it time and time again.  People get elected to the City Council or get appointed to the two Commissions and they soon lose their way and their common sense and become caught up in the minutiae and stop leading.  Bold leaders turn into clerks and secretaries.

We've heard it from politicians about the Westside.

They say: "CM PRESS, we can't improve the Westside and especially W. 19th Street because the lots are too small and there are rules in place, put in effect by previous Councils, that force the automobile traffic to be kept artificially low."  Or, they say: "We can't improve the Westside, because we don't have the money to do the things in the Westside Plans and we have no money to buy up slum buildings."

The CM PRESS says BS!

It has to do with having a vision and the will to do it and it has to do with knowing what leadership means.

As elected and appointed officials, you are supposed to INITIATE.  Then, it is up to staff to IMPLEMENT.

Remember Jimmy Carter?  He turned himself into a clerk and secretary and worried about minor things such as setting the schedule for the tennis courts at the White House.

Ronald Reagan, on the other hand, governed with broad strokes.  He initiated and let others implement.

So, in concrete terms what is the CM PRESS saying?

Just this:  The Councilmembers [and to a lesser degree the Planning Commissioners] should realize that fixing the Westside is key to fixing all of Costa Mesa and they should make that their priority.

Then, they should convey this to staff.

They might, for example, say to staff:   "We want to make W. 19th Street  a more upscale shopping street so that it performs better for the city.  And, we see that too many police resources are being used up by the Westside slum areas.  Thin out those slums. You, staff, figure out how to do that and do it."

I recall an incident where a billionaire was asked how he could tell if he had good managers.  His reply was something like this: "If one of my companies has been making bicycles for a hundred years and I go to my manager of that company and say, 'One year from now we are going to be making spaghetti and not bicycles and I want us to be a leader in the spaghetti business,' and I then go away to an island in the South Seas and only come back in a year, and find that my manger succeeded, that's a good manager."

It is up to the Council and the Planning Commission to set the vision and it is up to Staff to make that vision a reality.

HEY, CITY COUNCIL, HAVE THE CMPD CRUNCH THE NUMBERS FOR YOU

We constantly hear that we need more police officers because of crime in the city.

Well, where, exactly, is the crime in the city that requires these more police officers?

Is it in Mesa Verde?  Is it in Wendy Leece's gated neighborhood?  Is it on the Eastside?

Which neighborhoods are contributing the most crime?  And what are the characteristics of those neighborhoods that may be different from lower crime neighborhoods?

Here's our  answer to the last two questions immediately above:  Parts of the Westside--very small parts--the parts that are full of functionally obsolete apartment buildings, are sucking up a disproportionate amount of police resources and are busting the budget.  Remove or thin out those apartment buildings and they'll stop being crime generators and safe havens for gangs and criminals and will be nicer and safer areas of the city and will save lives and money.

And, City Council, ask the CMPD for a crime map--say, with red pins for violent crimes--that clearly shows where most of the crime occurs so you don't have to waste your time wading through pages of details and bureaucratic doublespeak.

Just look at the map and the red pins and you'll see the pattern.  Then, it's up to you to INITIATE and to tell staff to IMPLEMENT realistic and meaningful plans to make those areas crime free.  And, City Council, don't accept kumbaya crap about planting flowers in front of the slums or about how group hugs will change things.  Demand real solutions, not huggy kissy crap.

Stop wasting time, City Council, with goody two shoe feel good solutions that are not real solutions at all.

ASIAN WOMAN FOUND DEAD IN NEWPORT BEACH IS IDENTIFIED AS 'WHITE' IN  EARLIER BOOKING RECORD

Read the comments after the above linked article in the OC REGISTER and you'll come to a link to an earlier booking record that has her photo, and which lists her race as "white," even though she is clearly Asian.

This is something that those of us who are interested in White civil rights see often, i.e. non-Whites, who are clearly not White, are often listed as white in police reports.  What this does is skew the statistics to show that more Whites are involved in crimes than is actually the case.

CITY COUNCIL DRIFTING AIMLESSLY WITH NO REAL VISION

It's looking more and more as though the Costa Mesa City Council is giving us a version of the blind men and the elephant.  Three members seem to have grabbed on to different small parts of the beast and can't seem to understand what the whole elephant really looks like.

One member pushes all things sports and wants to spend $4 million dollars on fixing a sports field at Costa Mesa High School.  This is promoted as a way to attract more [upwardly mobile], young families to the city. If only this were true.  But, it's not.  Most upwardly mobile young families don't look at the sports facilities as their hot button.  They look at the academic standing of the school and this is determined by the demographics of who lives in the city. If you have slum apartment buildings you will attract slum dwellers and you'll have a low academic record in your school. That's reality, folks, whether you like it or not.

Another member pushes all things public safety--and mostly, she means beefing up the police force and giving them everything they want.  What she fails to understand is that if we make Costa Mesa a nicer place--a city that attracts an upwardly mobile demographic, we won't have as much crime and we won't need to keep spending money on ever more costly personnel and pensions.  Her way is to give a man a fish instead of giving him a fish hook. The improvement way, by contrast, fixes the tangible things such as removing slums and other breeding grounds and safe havens for a criminal element.

Another member pushes all things economic as in we have big problems with our pension system.  And, of course, he is right.  But, while we're trying to solve this problem, we must still work to improve the city, and with an improved city and more upwardly mobile young families here, the city will prosper.  As a more prosperous city, we will be able to  hire fewer high paid public safety employees who get pensions, and the problem will start to fade.  Yes, what the CM PRESS says is that a rising tide will raise all boats, and it is completely tied into improving the city and especially the Westside--because that's the drag on the city right now.  The Westside is eating up police and other resources because it has more crime and more social problems.  Fix the Westside, and you fix Costa Mesa.

Two other members don't appear to be pushing anything at all, and it may be that they see the whole elephant (we can hope). However, it takes more than seeing the whole elephant to get us on the right track.  One has to take action.  Action, action, action.  One has to have a vision.

Here's what the CM PRESS says we need to do in Costa Mesa:

FIX THE WESTSIDE

Here's how...

Re-brand and re-tenant W. 19th Street. Turn it into a boutique street with cafes and small shops catering to upwardly mobile people. (Coffee shops, surf shops, sports bars, etc.)

Start thinning out the slum apartment buildings by buying them up on the open market, tearing some down and replacing them with parking or pocket parks. In time, the City will have assembled enough parcels to be able to sell those parcels to developers who will be encouraged to put in modern, desirable housing to attract upwardly mobile people. Or, it can continue to land bank them for public uses.

Discourage a concentration of charity services in the area. They are magnets for social dysfunction and crime.

SHE LIKES THRIFT STORES [SO LONG AS THEY'RE ON THE WESTSIDE]

Folks, in retail real estate, it is axiomatic that you do not want a thrift store in your shopping center or on your shopping street.  Having them there puts your shopping center or your shopping street on a downward spiral. It brands them as downscale.

At last night's City Council meeting, the CM PRESS told the council at public comments how the city of Hawthorne City Council is right now trying to block two thrift stores from opening in that city.  Now, why is that the case?  It is because, as we just said in the previous paragraph, thrift stores do not help a city improve, but, instead, take it in the opposite direction.

Well, after we spoke, a woman who lives in Mesa Verde went to the podium and told the Council that she likes thrift stores just fine, by golly, and is apparently happy to see many of them [on the Westside and especially along the W. 19th Street corridor].  Had we been able to give a rebuttal, we would have suggested that we move some of the thrift stores from the Westside over to Mesa Verde, near where she lives, so she wouldn't have to drive so far to go slumming.

Now, a bit of a confession.  I also like thrift stores and I buy lots of books from them and I even bought a sports coat from one of them.  BUT, that's not the point.  The point is that when one takes a professional and arms length look at thrift stores, one realizes that they are not found in upwardly mobile, low crime neighborhoods where people take pride in where they live.  They are found near slums.  And, when you have thrift stores in your shopping center or on your shopping street, quality tenants will stay away.

In retail real estate, one of the hot terms is "tenant mix."  A successful shopping center or shopping street has a symbiotic tenant mix calculated to attract a demographic with money to spend.  A dysfunctional and under performing shopping center or shopping street will always have a a tenant mix that won't attract the demographic with money and it will have thrift stores and other downscale uses.

W. 19th Street is an underperforming shopping street for Costa Mesa and it needs to be improved. Period.

THANKS FOR THE NOXIOUS WEEDS

At last night's City Council meeting, some nice and well intentioned folks gave each of the Councilmembers a potted plant to promote Arbor Day, and one of the nice and well intentioned folks even publicly identified the plants as Carrotwood trees (Cupaniopsis anacardioides).

The CM PRESS then told the Council the truth about Carrotwood trees.  The state of Florida has them on its noxious weeds list and people are supposed to pull them out of the ground and burn them whenever and whereever they are found.

You see, Carrotwood trees have roots that will invade your sewer lines and they'll break curbs and lift up sidewalks causing trip and fall hazards.  When they bear their tiny orange fruit (not edible by humans), the fruit is encased in hard shells that split open, leaving sharp hard edges that will cut your feet.  Also, when they split open, crows like to eat the fruit and they'll sit in the Carrotwood trees by the dozens and will then defecate all over nearby cars and anything else underneath or nearby.

And, of course, crows are on a protected bird list, so you don't want to, er, shoot at them with slingshots or in any way make them uncomfortable.

We're thinking that the nice and well intentioned folks might want to give the Council some poision ivy for next year's Arbor Day promotion.  The poision ivy might be less troublesome in the long run.

GANG GRAFFITI IN NEW CONCRETE IN MESA NORTH THIS MORNING

UPDATE: 7:40 a.m.--Workers are now removing the graffiti by heating up the still uncured concrete with a torch and then scraping away the etched in names and symbols.  We'll bet you dollars to donuts that this graffiti wasn't reported to the City so that the punks who put the graffiti in the concrete could be tracked down and made to pay.

Several City Council meetings ago, the CM PRESS went to the podium to tell the Council that they were wasting our money by spending a couple of hundred thousand dollars to put new concrete in the alleys in the Fillmore-Coolidge slum, and that the money would be better spent as a down payment on buying one or more of the slum buildings and tearing them down.

Well, yesterday, the alley behind Fillmore Street (where there was a gang killing a couple of years ago) got the expensive concrete treatment.

This morning, there is gang graffiti etched into the concrete in the area closest to Paularino School.

Thank you for wasting our money City Council, and thank you for not listening to citizens.

Maybe, the self-aggrandizing piece of crap suck-up who claims he spoke to you in secret, and that's how the 19W. sign got put up, needs to talk to you in secret some more for you to take the right actions in this city.

There are three stories about violent crime in Costa Mesa in the papers right now:

1. A young White mother was raped and murdered in the apartments right behind OCC.  Her Black killer is on trial right now.

2. Two women have been sexually assaulted in Mesa del Mar. The attacker is described as Black and he hasn't been caught..

3. A White man was shot yesterday on Victoria Street. The police have arrested a Black man.

Can we see any similarities in the above stories that might give pause to even the stupidest weak seed lefties among us?

• Police and the justice system are not biased against minorities.

Crime Rates

• Blacks are seven times more likely than people of other races to commit murder, and eight times more likely to commit robbery.
• When blacks commit crimes of violence, they are nearly three times more likely than non-blacks to use a gun, and more than twice as likely to use a knife.
• Hispanics commit violent crimes at roughly three times the white rate, and Asians commit violent crimes at about one quarter the white rate.
• The single best indicator of violent crime levels in an area is the percentage of the population that is black and Hispanic.

Interracial Crime

• Of the nearly 770,000 violent interracial crimes committed every year involving blacks and whites, blacks commit 85 percent and whites commit 15 percent.
• Blacks commit more violent crime against whites than against blacks. Forty-five percent of their victims are white, 43 percent are black, and 10 percent are Hispanic. When whites commit violent crime, only three percent of their victims are black.
• Blacks are an estimated 39 times more likely to commit a violent crime against a white than vice versa, and 136 times more likely to commit robbery.
• Blacks are 2.25 times more likely to commit officially-designated hate crimes against whites than vice versa.

Gangs

• Only 10 percent of youth gang members are white.
• Hispanics are 19 times more likely than whites to be members of youth gangs. Blacks are 15 times more likely, and Asians are nine times more likely.

Incarceration

• Between 1980 and 2003 the US incarceration rate more than tripled, from 139 to 482 per 100,000, and the number of prisoners increased from 320,000 to 1.39 million.
• Blacks are seven times more likely to be in prison than whites. Hispanics are three times more likely.

UPDATE 2: 12:57 p.m.--HERE'S the report from the OC REGISTER.  Also no mention of the fact that the shooter is Black and his victim White.

UPDATE 1: 12:30 p.m.--HERE'S the report on the shooting from the Daily Pilot.  And, as we suspected, the Pilot has removed all references to race in the story.

Info from CMPD:  At approximately 2 a.m. this morning, a Black man shot a White man near Victoria and Miner in an apparent robbery attempt.  The Black man was subsequently arrested and is in jail.  The White man was taken to a hospital where he is expected to survive.

When this crime appears in the papers, let's see if the race of the suspect and the victim are given or whether that information has been scrubbed.  And, if they are given, let's see if we find some "white as can be" Whites mewling and asking "What does race have to do with it?"

Get your consciousness raised, folks, and don't become a crime victim because the press tries to make it seem that violent crime is an equal opportunity employer.  It isn't, not by a long shot.  Know the odds and protect yourself.  Graveyards are getting too full of unaware Whites who are killed by non-Whites.

LA TIMES ARTICLE:  CALIFORNIA GOP TOO WHITE AND TOO UPTIGHT

The advice from the experts is that the GOP must think more like the rest of California.

That one sentence above shows the major problem with our two party system.

To get votes, both parties must appeal to the same masses clustered under the center of the Bell Curve.  This means we really have only one party and one choice when we vote.

Saying the party is too White would be called hate speech if it were called too Black or too Hispanic, but because Whites are so brow beaten, you will hear few complaints.  In fact, you'll hear the "white as can be whites" (lower case intentional for these scumbags) cooing that they agree.  "Why, yes, let's get rid of the White people."

We will agree, however, that the GOP may be too uptight; but it's not because of positions on immigration, which is apparently one of the reasons why the party is seen as uptight according to the above linked article.

No, the uptightness among many Republicans comes from an inner  fear of being oneself--an alienation from their essential and natural beings.  Many Republicans really are bloodless nerdy types with very little of the life force within them.  They're just plain uptight latter day Victorians.

Of course, it's not all Republicans who are uptight, but there are enough of them to give the party that image.

And, many Republicans lack authenticity.

You'll hear various Republican know-nothings pointing to Ronald Reagan to "prove" that Republicans and especially conservative Republicans can win elections.  However, what these know-nothings don't seem to understand about Reagan is the fact that he was authentic, genuine and full of life.  He laughed a lot.  He enjoyed life.  He didn't look as though he had just sucked on a lemon and was wearing shoes that were too tight or had underwear made of burlap. He chopped wood and did the ordinary things and didn't put on airs. He presented a happy image of a conservative Republican.

Democrat Bill Clinton had/has the same love of life and authenticity that Reagan had. It just shines through when one has it.

Of course, Clinton and Reagan's political ideas were often miles apart, but the point I'm making is that the Republicans, if they want to win elections, need to bubble up some candidates full of life and joy, but who also have the right world views.

The GOP doesn't have to pander on race/ethnicity as the unauthentic experts are saying.  It just has to be naturally for the things that all regular citizens want and it has to be one with the people, and not act like it is the party of life-hating and overly strict newly minted traffic cops or hell fire and damnation Puritans.

As I've written before, many of my views on GOP conservatives originated from when I lived in Washington, D.C. and was dating a girl who got a job as the secretary at the national office of Young Americans for Freedom.  At that time, many in the group were trying to seem more in tune with what was going on in the country during that period, so they found a guy who looked like a Hippie and he became their man in the window, who they would point at to show just how with it they were.

Today, some "experts" in the the present GOP think a different type of man is needed in the window to give cover to those just out of view, so they keep auditioning non-Whites to be their man in the window.  It was very transparently artificial back then, and it still is today.

And, the GOP isn't coming up with many good non-Whites in the window.  For a time, they all thought Bobby Jindal could be that guy.  He has dark skin, so there's some cover possible.  However, when Jindal appeared on TV to give a Republican response to Obama, Jindal looked and sounded like a pencil necked geek who had just escaped from a sideshow after biting the head off a live chicken.

More recently, the GOP has been trying to put Marco Rubio in the window to fill the Latino role.  Unfortunately, when Rubio gave his audition on national TV recently, he looked as shifty as Dick Nixon and suffered from dry mouth disease.

So, if any of you folks of color are looking for a gig, maybe you can audition to be the GOP's man in the window.  Just talk about smaller government and conservative principles.  Be sure to praise Rush Limbaugh and Ronald Reagan and knock Obama.  If you're Black, but act White, you'll be loved by some of the Tea Party types if you really go after Obama.  They love that kind of cover. "See, we're not racist."

Actually, and to be more precise, the GOP is looking for several different men in the window to cover different races/ethnicities.  They need a Black, a Hispanic and an Asian.  They also need women of color and homosexuals and transgenders, so it's an open casting call (except for Whites).

Police officer is found dead sitting in his police car with his weapon still in the holster.

Meanwhile, the newspaper is quickly removing many comments from readers before too many other readers see them. Our guess is that these removed comments are pointing out that the killer is Black and they may also be pointing out the high Black violent crime rate. We infer this last from a comment that the paper let stand (of course) from a reader who claims to be "as white as can be," and who wants people to stop bringing up race.

This "white as can be" commenter then says that he or she has Jewish parents and a Black relative, and he or she wants everyone to know that whites can be criminals also. Ho hum.  We see almost the same comment from "white as can be" readers in newspapers from all around the country in similar stories.  Oftentimes, these "white as can be" commenters will rhetorically ask "What does race have to do with it," after someone, usually a White person, is slaughtered by a non-White.

What does race have to do with it?  Well, one just has to look at the statistics to see the trend.

According to the article, this place was the home of a solid waste and recycling company exec.

In talking about humans, oppressed and weak seed Whites try to avoid talking about race lest they be called names.  This makes as much sense as talking about dogs without talking about breeds.

When you read about cities that have various characteristics such as high crime rates or low crime rates or great schools or lousy schools, you need to look at the demographics.

And, when you do look at the demographics you find that race is an important statistical category that must be considered to understand why things are as they are  in  our cause and effect universe.

UPDATE:  We're thinking that the area by the fountain in front of the gate to Wendy's very secure and safe neighborhood might be a good place to feed homeless people.  Maybe we can have some of Wendy's church pals set up there every day.  And, to show how compassionate we are, we'll even print up flyers with a map to Wendy's neighborhood and personally hand them out to the homeless folks  if someone will provide the free food and man the feeding tables. Perhaps, Wendy might even come out from behind the gate to help.

CITY COUNCIL AGENDA FOR TUESDAY

Once again, the Council is about to spend money like drunken sailors.  This time, they're being asked to replace a bunch of perfectly good police cars with brand new ones.

Oh, and, yes, the Council keeps hiring more police officers.

Have you seen how many police cars Costa Mesa has?  Peer in through the gate at CMPD HQ. There are cars up the ying yang.

Naturally, the usual uniform groupies will say we need the new cars and new cops to fight crime.

Well, we say it's a matter of having proper priorities.  We wouldn't need as many police cars or as many cops if the City Council would just start thinning out the slums.

Look, folks, two of the Councilmembers claim to have real estate experience.  So, why aren't they using it?

All that the Council (and the Planning Commission) are doing is allowing more new apartments and condos to be built--which would be a good thing, IF they were also removing old functionally obsolete slum buildings.

All we're seeing is an increase in the population of Costa Mesa due to all the new buildings, with no offsetting decrease in the population because the old functionally obsolete slum apartments aren't being removed.

Let me put it this way: There are two parts to this equation:

1. Allow the building of new buildings. (They're doing this.)
                                                                            
 2. Buy up and raze the slum buildings. (They're not doing this.)

And, about hiring ever more cops.  All of these people are going to get pensions just like the present ones--and isn't that supposed to be a big problem for the city?

Again, if the City bought up slum buildings and put in pocket parks or even additional parking, the crime level would go down as a criminal element moves to greener pastures in cities to our north.

And, when you put money into real estate, that real estate doesn't get medical insurance or life long pensions.

In fact, that real estate pays you back in the long run.

What are the changes?  Some slum buildings got a coat of paint.  Ho hum.  Folks, the slum neighborhoods in our city are functionally obsolete.  This means that you can't fix them with paint.

Paint doesn't change them from crowded, barracks style apartments with too few modern amenities that will attract upwardly mobile people.

THE NRA FINDS A BLACK TO GIVE THEM COVER

Here's a sentence from the above linked article:

"The media is going to have a hard time stereotyping the National Rifle Association (NRA) after the organization just announced its latest contributor to NRA News." 

Okay, so there are Blacks who are against gun control. We all know that.

But, there's something smarmy about the NRA--which is mostly composed of White people--putting this Black guy in the window in order to head off cries that it is mostly White people who are opposed to gun control.

This is just another example of weak seed, effete Whites hiding behind Blacks and other minorities to push various things, instead of just standing on their own two feet as fully functioning human beings capable to defending what it is they want without pretending that it isn't just a White thing.

We see the GOP and many conservatives doing this sort of thing all the time.

What can you call the attempts by weak seed Whites who seek such cover?   Try "racism."

Be sure to read the comments after the above article to read effusive praise for this Black guy from people who are probably White.  Smarmy, smarmy, smarmy.  

These are the same types who will tell you that they don't notice skin color, but somehow they always do seem to notice skin color when a non-White agrees with their position.  

And, they're always quick to pat the non-White on the head and encourage him, as they stand behind him and point at him and say:  "See, we're not racists, we don't notice skin color, why, there's a Black guy in our window where the world can see him."

It was also this way with Colin Powell.  Remember how all the conservatives and Republicans praised this guy to high heaven and put him in the window?  Then, Powell stopped dancing to their tune and suddenly he was no longer their good Black. So they went in search of another good Black.

Of course the GOP is still looking for good non-Whites of all stripes, so if you are Latino or Black or Asian or maybe just have a heavy tan and can pass for non-White you may be able to audition for a role.

NB:  The CM PRESS supports gun control (meaning learning to shoot correctly) and the NRA.  What we are against is the phony and transparent PR crap that we see some weak seed Whites constantly coming up with to give them cover so they don't have to stand on their own two feet.
