GET YOUR OWN HOUSE IN ORDER MR. MANSOOR

Mayor Allan Mansoor has a nice column (HERE) in the Daily Pilot today in which Mansoor rails against the feds and the state spending too much and then taxing to pay for the spending.

We agree with Mansoor. Our guess is that most people who have looked at the issue also probably agree with him.

The problem we have with Mansoor is that he doesn't practice what he preaches.
Instead of making necessary cuts to Costa Mesa government spending, he just keeps rubber stamping any spending bills that staff puts in front of him.
At the last City Council meeting we told Mansoor that some of us are getting fed up with his sanctimonious whining about the state and the feds and their tax and spend ways and their big government views when he won't put into practice right here in Costa Mesa what he preaches.

We were particularly disgusted by Mansoor at that Council meeting when he broke ranks with Councilmembers Bever and Leece and voted with Foley and Monahan to pile some phony fees on the backs of the most vulnerable among us--the elderly--who are most likely to need ambulance and paramedic service, and to everyone involved in automobile accidents.

Under the scam approved by Mansoor, Foley and Monahan if you get into an automobile accident and the fire department shows up, and even if they aren't needed, you'll be billed on a time clock for how long they're standing around at your accident site doing nothing.
Of course, if you're an illegal alien and have no insurance, Costa Mesa won't bill you.
And, why do we have these phony fees? Because Mansoor, Foley and Monahan won't rein in spending, including, as just one example, the massive overtime pay that we're giving to firefighters.

So, if the tax and spend trio, Mansoor, Foley and Monahan, have their way and if Councilmember Bever can't convince one of them to revisit the issue at the June 2 City Council meeting, then count on being taxed to death here in Costa Mesa so we can pay some individual firefighters more than $ 60,000 per year just in overtime.
And, since our firefighters are paid so well, they don't have to live in Costa Mesa with the rest of us peons. Much of the money we pay them flies the coop and is spent in other cities rather than recirculating in Costa Mesa where it could help our local merchants.

COUPLE OF GOOD COLUMNS IN THE DAILY PILOT

We're always pleased when members of the City Council, Planning Commission and Parks and Recreation Commission put in extra effort and stay in the fray and are on the right side of issues. Too many people on the Council or the Commissions do little but show up for meetings and collect their checks.

Planning Commission Chair Jim Righeimer on massive pensions for public employees.

Planning Commissioner Colin McCarthy on taxes.

MORE SCARE TACTICS FROM ARNOLD
Says state will have to "borrow" $ 3,341,280 from Costa Mesa if his props fail on May 19.

No doubt, the tax and spend three on the Costa Mesa City Council (Mansoor, Monahan and Foley) will then think up some more taxes to charge you instead of cutting City expenses. Maybe a tax on walking on public sidewalks. Perhaps a tax on driving on our streets. How about a tax on breathing Costa Mesa air?

Mansoor is a big disappointment to many who supported him. He rails against federal and state taxes and big spending, but fails to cut taxes and spending right here in Costa Mesa where he has the ability to do so.

CHRYSLER AND GM TO CUT AS MANY AS 3000 DEALERS STARTING TODAY
Will the tax and spend big government types on the Costa Mesa City Council--Mansoor, Monahan and Foley--now try to raise more phony taxes on citizens to keep the bloated municipal government from making necessary cuts?

Maybe a tax on speaking at the podium to the Council or a tax on sitting in the audience watching the Council?

How about a tax on buying matches because matches cause fires and the fire department will "provide a service by inspecting" every match you buy and then charging you for the inspection?
Hey, citizens have to serve our city employees. Right? We have to keep paying some individual employees more than $60,000 just in overtime each year.

If we paid them less, they might actually have to live in Costa Mesa with us peons instead of living in Newport Beach and nicer cities.

OBAMA FIRES TOP US GENERAL IN AFGHANISTAN & PUTS IN NEW GENERAL

Our take is that Obama wanted a tougher guy who knows how to move fast against an unconventional enemy and not get us bogged down in Afghanistan as we are in Iraq and as we were in Vietnam.

(Photo of Lieutenant General Stanley McChrystal who replaces General David McKiernan)

The good news for General McChrystal is that it's all up to him, now. That's also the bad news for him. Our bet is that he's being given a tight timeline to show some progress or also get fired.

Once McChrystal is confirmed, we expect him to make some major changes to his command structure and tactics and we also expect him to almost immediately start a major assault in the mountains on the border with Pakistan. But those are just our guesses.

OBAMA STEPS IN IT IN AFGHANISTAN

BACKGROUND (Our opinion and not from the WSJ article)
Obama is stepping in it by sending more troops into Afghanistan. It's not our fight and there's no way we can change the trajectory of history that is unfolding over there in the way we are trying to do it.

Our problem in the U.S. is that we often have a short view of history and we too often liken newer conflicts to earlier conflicts in our national memory--such as the war against Germany and Japan.

The big difference is that with Germany and Japan we did not fight against a very strong world view that values the religion of the people more than the individual lives of adherents.

Many Muslims have more of a bee hive world view than we are used to--individual bees are always expendable so long as the hive thrives. Muslims strapping bombs to their bodies and blowing themselves up? It's not much different than bees sacrificing themselves, by stinging intruders with stingers that rip the guts out of the bees doing the stinging, to further the interests of their hive. This is alien thinking to the U.S. and the West where we put maximum value on each individual.

When India got its freedom from Great Britain in 1947, Pakistan (which had been part of majority Hindu India) split off to become its own Muslim nation. The Muslims and Hindus do not get along and Pakistan and India see each other as enemies.

Still, all was relatively quiet in the three nations prior to 2001. The Taliban were in control of Afghanistan but were contained within the nation by Pakistan, which, as already mentioned, was also an Islamic nation, and the Taliban were busy running Afghanistan and implementing their fundamentalist Islamic ideas throughout the land. And, Pakistan and India were essentially at a stalemate along their border. Both nations have nukes and neither one is markedly stronger than the other. There was no reason for either nation to start a major war with the other. Things were in balance.

Then, in 2001, the U.S. did some meddling and booted the Taliban out of power in Afghanistan and put in a puppet government in its place. When that happened, large numbers of the Taliban moved into the mountainous and tribal regions between Afghanistan and Pakistan and began building up their strength.

By being in the mountains with tribal allies who do not recognize the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan, the Taliban were now in a position where they might try to take over Pakistan with its nukes. And, if the Taliban didn't hate the U. S. before we kicked them out of power, they now hate us with a red hot hatred that can't be quenched.

This brings us to the events of this week. Under U.S. pressure, our puppets in Pakistan are moving troops and supplies away from their border with India to fight the Taliban on the other side of the country. This will leave their border with India weak while they fight their fellow Muslims. Will India take advantage of this? Probably not. But because of the tensions, the Pakistanis will probably leave enough troops on this border to weaken their efforts against the Taliban. And, if the Taliban win some battles (and if it is thought this is because the Pakistanis didn't put enough troops or effort into the fight), the U.S. will be pulled more deeply into the conflict to make up the manpower and perhaps willpower shortage; which will anger many Muslim fence sitters who will then become our enemies.

Also, despite talk by our bribed happy-face puppets in Pakistan about the Pakistani people not liking the Taliban, this isn't completely accurate. Some may not, but many of the Pakistanis support the Taliban, and with every air strike by the U.S. that kills more Pakistani civilians, the hatred of the U.S. grows throughout all of the Muslim world including in Pakistan.

Will Obama turn into as much of a bumbler as W? He's going in that direction.

STILL NO DESCRIPTION OR EVEN A MENTION OF THE STRONG ARM ROBBERY IN MESA VERDE ON THE CMPD PRESS RELEASE SITE
But when you go to the site you can read about a "buss" accident.

Maybe we've got it wrong at the CM PRESS, but for some reason we can't get over thinking that a description of outstanding violent criminals might actually help catch them and also keep people safer.

We also can't help thinking that the cops should probably put up press releases whenever there are armed violent criminals on the loose in our neighborhoods.

Well, maybe with a 35.7% jump in violent crime in Costa Mesa from last year, there would just be too many press releases.

AFTER RESTRUCTURING, GM PLANS TO BUILD MORE CARS OUTSIDE U.S.
From the Washington Post

Have we become the Eloi?

The U.S. needs a common sense revival. We're not going to survive as a nation unless we re-industrialize and actually start making things here again.

The false belief that the U.S. can be a nation of paper pushers, middlemen and executives while all the fingernail dirtying jobs will be done in foreign nations, is a very basic error in thinking.

You may remember that in H. G. Wells' book The Time Machine that humanity had evolved into two species.

The Eloi lived on the surface of the earth in park-like settings and were dissolute and frail, while the Morlocks lived underground and did all the work to keep the earth park-like and the Eloi fat and happy.

The Eloi had one purpose in life: to be food for the Morlocks.

LEVEL OF SERVICE SCAM

One of the cliches that we're hearing about why the City Council can't make necessary cuts to their spending is because they have to "maintain the level of service that residents currently enjoy."

What a bunch of crap.

When we see ten cops standing around doing nothing but talking about their personal lives when a violation is taking place within their plain view and when not one of them will even say anything to those who are in violation and when their boss at the police station refuses to have them do anything and gives wise guy answers to a citizen who has complained about the violation, we know something is wrong.

When we hear that firefighters are "providing a service" by charging apartment owners to "inspect" fire sprinkler heads in their apartment buildings at $4.00 per head, we know something is wrong.

When we see pick and shovel city employees show up to replenish dog poop bags at a park in brand shiny new trucks, we know something is wrong.

When we see that most of our cops (and presumably firefighters as well) get paid so much that they don't have to live in Costa Mesa with all our violent crime and other problems like the residents who are paying them, we know something is wrong.

When we hear a couple of City Council members pontificate about how Washington or Sacramento are taxing citizens too much, but who then refuse to cut taxes, fees and expenses right here in Costa Mesa where they have the power to actually do this, we know something is wrong.

When we see the City Council approve spending millions of dollars on tearing out wind sown plants in our "natural" Fairview Park and replace them with plants that can't live there naturally unless they have constant and intensive care by city employees, we know something is wrong.

When we see that our violent crime rate has jumped more than 35 percent in a year, and we're told that we have a high level of service and that we have to keep paying more and more for this high level of service, we know something is wrong.

The fact is that local government is full of fat cats who refuse to cut expenses and who want to just charge residents more and more to pay the fat cats.

A local government is supposed to serve the citizens of a city; not the other way around.

What's next?
Maybe the fire department will charge residents a water usage fee when they put out fires?

Perhaps they'll put a meter on each fire hose and demand a credit card when they respond to fires?

How about a charge for every foot of fire hose that is unravelled to "provide a service."

Just as work expands to fill the time allotted to it, so too does government expand to consume all the money it can take.

Enough is enough! Stop all the stupid talk City Council and do the job you were hired to do.

WE WONDER IF OUR NEWSPAPER READING EVOLUTION IS WIDESPREAD

EVOLUTION PHASE 1

Before the Internet took hold, we subscribed to the LA TIMES and the OC REGISTER and read both front to back each morning along with the DAILY PILOT that came with the TIMES.

EVOLUTION PHASE 2

As the Internet took hold (and after we got a faster computer) we gradually stopped reading the TIMES and the REGISTER but continued reading the DAILY PILOT that came with the TIMES each morning. The PILOT gave us the local news we wanted to read, while the TIMES and the REGISTER didn't do that and were also too slow on the draw for national and international news which we usually got from DRUDGE and other sources on the Internet, with constant updates.

EVOLUTION PHASE 3

We finally cancelled our subscriptions to the TIMES and the REGISTER. We just weren't reading them, and if they occasionally had anything we wanted to read, we could get it from their Internet versions.

As time went on, and even though we have links to both newspapers here on the CM PRESS, we found that we rarely went to either of these big papers even in their Internet versions.

However, we did and still do go to the Internet version of the DAILY PILOT frequently during each day for updates on local news and views. And, sometimes we'll cross check a story from the PILOT with one from the REGISTER. We usually do this when the PILOT runs stories with no descriptions of outstanding violent criminals in Costa Mesa.

EVOLUTION PHASE 4

A family member missed the coupons and sales ads in the REGISTER, along with a few features such as the Food section, the Home and Garden section and the Sunday business Section so we recently restarted our subscription and now get the paper on the four days of the week when the above appear (Thursday--Sunday). Actually, Friday is a waste because there are no sections there that our family member wants. It was just part of a subscription deal from the Register. Personally, we don't read the thing at all.

EVOLUTION PHASE 5

The ink stains on our fingers have disappeared and our head is no longer bowed to look down at a newspaper. Our eyes have become less squinty and the redness has gone away. Our typing fingers are now faster. We're expecting to develop an opposable thumb and the ability to walk upright in the near future as we continue to evolve away from newspapers.
