SWEDISH SPHINX VS. KIMCHI DRAGON LADY AT TEA PARTY TO-DO
It was like the Star Wars Bar folded into two people at last night's Tea Party meeting where Allan Mansoor--his father is from Egypt and his mother is from Sweden-- who is married to a woman whose mother is from Vietnam and whose father is from Croatia/Lithuania-- and Michelle Eunjoo Park Steel--who was born in Korea and who lived in Japan and who speaks Korean, Japanese and English and who is married to a guy with an Irish name--each pitched the crowd on their candidacy for Supervisor.kimchi1.jpg) |

At last night's meeting, Mansoor spoke of his local roots and tried to lay to rest any rumors that he's in favor of amnesty for illegal aliens. The rumor got started (and was used by Steel last night against Mansoor) after Mansoor put his name to a letter asking for immigration reform. Mansoor mumbled several reasons why he signed the stupid letter, none of which were good answers. It sounded to us as though he was saying he didn't really know what he was signing, or maybe that he thought it was simply an innocent letter asking for reform of the immigration process. HERE's an OC REGISTER article about the letter Mansoor signed and the protests in front of his office about it.
After each candidate spoke, the moderators read written questions from the audience to the candidates. One question, perhaps from an individual in the audience who looked a little like Poopdeck Pappy (actually, many people there--even some of the women--looked a little like Poopdeck Pappy), was aimed at Steel and it went like this: "Ms. Steel, what do you say to those who say that you are a carpetbagger and that you are a political opportunist and that if you don't win this election you'll move on to easier pickings?"
Steel seemed to be set back on her heels at this question and she gave a rambling non-answer in which she bragged that in 2011she moved to OC after she bought a home in a gated community right on the beach in Surfside and that she likes to walk her three dogs on the beach, which is, don't you know, right at her door and how her husband likes to listen to the waves. (Say, don't all of us Costa Mesans live in gated communities right on the sand a few yards from the ocean? Maybe, Steel wasn't aware that this is not how we live here in Costa Mesa. Or, maybe she's not sure of the map of this area yet. Then again, and this is the best choice, maybe she just didn't have a good answer to the carpetbagging and political opportunist claim.)
Both Mansoor and Steel admitted that they are pretty much alike in their political philosophies, but Steel tried to distinguish herself from Mansoor by repeatedly bringing up the immigration reform letter that Mansoor signed, and Mansoor kept trying to correct the record by saying that he is against illegal immigration.
Clearly, Steel is going to use that letter in the campaign against Mansoor, but one wonders how that will sit with the elite Republicans who support her but who are trying to be kinder and friendlier to illegal aliens these days.Our guess is that Steel will have a couple of different stump speeches as well as carefully targeted mailing pieces. The first speech and one of her targeted mailing pieces will more than likely be aimed at staunch conservative Tea Party types and will emphasize her stand against illegal immigration, and the second will be to try to get votes of Asians and Latinos and won't mention her position on illegal immigration but will emphasize that she just loves all immigrants, don't you know. We expect her to paint herself as plain wrap all American to White conservatives, but that she'll emphasize the ethnic Asian angle to Asian and Latino groups. Naturally, these will all be well crafted and subtle but will be coded for the target audiences.
After Mansoor and Steel spoke, Scott Baugh took to the floor and talked about how Republicans need to start connecting with voters by not always talking at them, but talking to them and by looking at things from their perspective. Read, by being authentic and "just folks." This will be hard to do for some of the White GOP elites whose pandering is so transparent as to be laughable. In this regard, we are reminded of the over the top outrage that some of the White GOP elites engaged in after a White grandmother and local GOP official, sent out a joke about Obama and these elites then seemed to almost bust their arteries as they rushed to the media to tell everyone how outraged they were (outraged I say!!!) at the "racist" joke.These days, some of the White GOP elites are busily scouting around for favored minorities to put in the front windows, and we half expect some of them to find some rappers and mariachis to provide music at their meetings.
Just for starters, here are a few of our stream of consciousness suggestions to the GOP suits: Stop already with the hypersensitivity to race/ethnicity. Be polite in this regard, but recognize that all humans are not exactly the same. Respect the differences, but don't pander. Stop trying to be un-White. Be who you were born to be and have some self-esteem and group respect. Call for the reindustrialization of the U.S. Either shut up about Obamacare or come up with realistic alternatives. Don't, in any way, shape, or form, try to bring in amnesty. Don't always appear in suits. Show that you get your hands dirty doing ordinary things. Talk about concrete things that affect people in the here and now and don't always talk in terms of political theories. You want an image that you should follow? Be a hail-fellow-well-met South Boston Irish Politician (even if you are not a South Boston Irish Politician). Don't get it? Be the friendly bartender at the local Irish pub. Stop acting as though you are bloodless and have an iron rod up your butts. Relax and be human. Laugh at yourselves and don't take yourselves so seriously. Have fun. Be genuine and authentic.
