Last Updated: Thursday, August 14, 2008, 4:45 PM

IT STARTS
Nine begin, but only three will win.
Check back later for more info on the nine candidates for Costa Mesa City Council as we begin to look at who they are.

AIRPORT TO TAKE 600 HOMES

O'Hare Airport in Chicago has to grow, so an area with 600 homes is going to have to go. The homeowners are trying to fight the expansion, but it's a losing battle. LINK

Are you listening, Newport Beach and Costa Mesa?

Do you really think capping flights at John Wayne Airport or having a train carry passengers to an airport in the desert is going to stop the expansion of JWA? Don't be naive.

The only thing that will keep JWA from expanding is to find another location for an international airport.

And, as we've said many times before, the most likely candidate for such an airport is the northern part of Camp Pendleton.

HERE'S WHAT YOUR CITY COUNCIL BALLOT WILL LOOK LIKE IN NOVEMBER

The Secretary of State today released the results of the alphabet lottery for ballot position. Scroll down for the order of the City Council candidates in November. LINK

If any names below seem to pop out at you (Oh, perhaps, because we put them in boldface and red), you might keep them in mind for your vote in November. Remember, you get to vote for three candidates, and it appears that Righeimer, Monahan and Bever are going to be the best slate candidates for improvement. Vote for one and vote for all.

You might also note that if you decide to vote for these improvement minded candidates: Righeimer, Monahan and Bever, that their names appear in the # 1, # 5, # 8 positions on the ballot, so you'll have to scroll down as you vote.

VOTE 1, skip 3--and VOTE, skip 2--and VOTE. Or, vote for the Rigmonabever.

Say, is there any other way we can help you remember this?
Jim Righeimer
Lisa Reedy
Nick Moss
Chris McEvoy
Gary Monahan
Bill Sneen
Katrina Foley
Eric Bever
Chris Bunyan
-----

As you may have guessed, as of today, we think Righeimer, Monahan and Bever may be the best choices if you want to lower crime, stop Costa Mesa from being an illegal alien sanctuary city, keep taxes low, and see improvement in Costa Mesa.

But, frankly, we have problems with each of them. Still, elections are about picking the best of the lot.

However, we'll attend all the candidate forums and analyze what each candidate stands for, what they've done in the past, and what they say they'll do in the future. And, if we find any candidates other than these three who seem to be better for improvement, we'll let you know.

As we've said from the very beginning of the Improvement movement in Costa Mesa; we have one simple question we ask of everything: Will this decision or person or proposal be best for the improvement of Costa Mesa or not? That hasn't changed, and we are no respecter of persons or political parties and we have no friends in politics.

AND IN OTHER POLITICS...

We noted that no-Planning Commissioner Jim Fisler is running for the Costa Mesa Sanitary District. Unfortunately, Jim didn't pay to have a candidate statement in the voter's guide. He might still win on name recognition, but it's a lot tougher to win without that statement.
