NOW SMITH IS TRYING TO BROWBEAT COUNCILMEMBER BEVER INTO SAYING THERE ARE NO SLUMS IN COSTA MESA
Link

Ah, Smith, then why did the Westside reports name blighted areas of the city that should be bulldozed? And, why is Costa Mesa now in the slum/poverty category with Santa Ana?

And, have you ever visited Shalimar, Mission-Mendoza, Fillmore-Coolidge? These fit the definition of slum.

Oh by the way, there have been gang related murders in each of the above listed slums. And, we believe that they require police action more often than most other areas of the city.

GUESS WHO TRIED TO STOP THE BAD MOUTHING OF COSTA MESA?
[It wasn't Steve Smith. He may have been too busy setting another trash can on fire.]

Councilmember Bever makes a good point in his post in response to Steve Smith's silly column, in which Smith whines about people bad mouthing Costa Mesa.

Here's what Bever wrote (LINK) in the Daily Pilot:

Eric Bever wrote on Apr 15, 2010 12:10 AM:

" BTW Steve, a month or two ago, I was the only council member who asked that we NOT designate the entire city as a "Federal Recovery Zone", which included (I paraphrase) notation of excessive poverty and foreclosures... That recovery zone designation could create a negative perception, and will likely show up in various market analysis documents, which could sway businesses. Do you agree, or disagree with the designation? Did you speak on it at council? if you are interested in defending our city's image, why did you sit that one out? I could have used your help on that. "

The CM PRESS has an answer for Mr. Bever: No, Smith did not speak out against Costa Mesa being put into a slum/poverty category. We know, because we were at the meeting.

In fact, that soft spoken gentleman at the podium who did speak out against this horrible hit to Costa Mesa's reputation, was none other than the CM PRESS.

And, Mr. Bever also has it right when he indicates that this slum/poverty designation put over ALL of Costa Mesa--just as it is over ALL of Santa Ana, will be seen by retailers.

Say, did you also know that the new owners of Triangle Square (HERE) describe it as being in Newport Beach?

Oh, and what about South Coast Plaza and the surrounding area? Where is that located? Why, it's in South Coast Metro. Check the small print to find "Costa Mesa."

The Costa Mesa name is tarnished. And, it's not because some citizens are trying to improve it. It's because some people are pretending the problems don't exist and this is just making them worse.

And, what about demographic and other reports about a city? Any retailer or competent business person can tell you whether a city is a good place for an upscale business without ever going there, just by looking at these reports. A business person in New York doesn't have to come to Costa Mesa to know what the city is like. The reports tell him that.

Those of us who are trying to improve Costa Mesa, aren't letting any cats out of the bag when we point out problems that need to be fixed. What we are doing is trying to make enough noise about the problems so our elected officials will take action just to get us to shut up.

Do you hear that Foley? You want people to stop coming to City Council meetings and telling you about the crime and other problems? Well, instead of baking lasagna for the families of people killed in drive by shootings, why don't you work to get rid of the conditions that breed the problems? Hmmmm?

The problem is that "extremism" is being defined so low that the vigor of the Tea Party rallies may be sucked out of them after only the most mealy mouthed signs are allowed. It's hard to get fired up when all the signs just say "We love Mom and Apple Pie!"

CM PRESS # 103

HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY

There is a real ethical problem with Steve Smith constantly telling readers that we should hide Costa Mesa's problems in order to attract businesses here.

Would you be pleased if you bought a house from a guy who told you that the plumbing was fine--but he knew it was leaking; that the electricity was perfect--but he knew it was likely to cause a serious fire--that the neighborhood was top quality--but he knew there had been 3 murders on that block?

Well, Costa Mesa has problems. And, the only way to solve them is to bring them out into the open and talk about them. Doing so isn't bad mouthing Costa Mesa, as Smith seems to think. It's an attempt to solve the problems. To correct them. To make Costa Mesa a much nicer, safer and better city.

Pretending there are no problems when you know this is a lie is a recipe for making those problems get worse.

It's also dishonest.

But even beyond this, such dishonesty isn't going to fool anyone but the most unsophisticated retailers.

Sophisticated retailers will review demographic reports of their trade area (usually 1 and 3 mile circles), to see income levels, etc. Full demographic reports will give race/ethnicity, education levels, household income levels, individual income levels, number of people between certain ages and much more. And, sophisticated retailers will drive the area to look at what kind of cars they see on the roads and in parking lots as an indicator of the type of customers who are in the area.

No, the better policy for Costa Mesa is to fix the problems. Then, when we say it's a great and safe city, we'll be telling the truth.

And, what about Smith's oft repeated suggestion that Costa Mesa's problems should be fixed in private and not in public? Well, that would be great. The problem is that this was tried in Costa Mesa and nothing was done. It was only when the improvers came on the scene and started making noise that things started getting better.

Because of the noise the improvers made, the Westside is much nicer today than it was a few years ago. But, the job isn't finished.

STEVE SMITH CONTINUES TO REVEAL THE ILLOGICAL THINKING OF A LEFTY
Steve Smith's MO over at the Daily Pilot is to write a column (HERE) and then reply to readers who post about his column.

Here's how Smith responded when philiesinfive wrote about the slums in Costa Mesa:

Steve Smith wrote on Apr 13, 2010 2:12 PM:

" philliesinfive... We agree on the need for a positive message but I stand by my statement that there are no slums in Costa Mesa. If you want to see what a real slum looks like, use Google images to show you. Nothing even close here. Thanks, Steve "

Huh?

You see, Smith is denying that something exists because in other places that something may be worse or bigger.

So, using Smith's logic, we might say that if Smith lights a plastic trash container on fire by stupidly putting hot fireworks in the trash container (which he did), and someone says there's a fire, Smith might reply:

"There is no fire there. If you want to see what a real fire looks like, use Google images to show you. Nothing even close here. Thanks, Steve."

JUDGE TELLS MISSISSIPPI SCHOOLS TO STOP SEGREGATING
Link

Meanwhile...in Costa Mesa, the Costa Mesa City Council continues funding some non-profits that appear to be segregating.

THE HEART OF THE ISSUE: Tax money should not be used in ways that favor some groups and not others. The logic is simple: We all pay taxes and we should all get the full benefit of our taxes.

THE PROBLEM WITH SOME NON-PROFITS IN COSTA MESA: Some non-profits in Costa Mesa--mostly on the Westside--receive tax money, but they only serve one racial/ethnic group.

As we've reported numerous times, one such non-profit even told a White girl that she wasn't welcome in their after school homework help programs because of the color of her skin.

And, also as we've reported, the Feds busted this non-profit.

But, there are other non-profits that seem to be doing the same thing. And, the CM PRESS is calling on the Costa Mesa City Council to stop giving our tax money to such non-profits.

How about you? Do you want your tax money to go to a non-profit that won't let you use their services because you're the wrong color?

STEVE SMITH WANTS YOU TO WEAR ROSE COLORED GLASSES AND DROP YOUR IQ DOWN TO THE POINT WHERE YOU DON'T NOTICE PROBLEMS

In his silly Pollyannish column today (HERE), Flopsy Katrina Foley's pal Steve Smith shows just how much out of touch he is with reality.

Smith apparently doesn't know that to solve problems, you first have to identify the problems and you have to bring them into the open and examine them.

Only then can you solve problems. Pretending there are no problems, usually just makes them worse.

Smith's main target in his column is Mayor Mansoor, who Smith takes to task for telling the truth when Mansoor says that Costa Mesa has a problem with illegal aliens.

Costa Mesa does have such a problem. The CMPD has even issued a report that all the gangs in Costa Mesa are Hispanic.

And, anyone who pays attention is aware of the drive-by shootings, assaults and attacks in the city. Now, are all those criminals "illegal aliens." Probably not, but most probably have some nexus with the city being chock full of illegal aliens and the slums.

What about the schools in Costa Mesa? They're falling to Santa Ana levels because of the children of illegal aliens in them who have trouble speaking English.

Smith then denies that Costa Mesa has slums.

Maybe Smith just doesn't know what the word "slum" means. So, here's the definition from Your Dictionary.com:

"Slum--A usually heavily populated area of a city, characterized by poverty, poor housing, etc."

Smith should take off his rose colored glasses and drive to the Shalimar slum, or the Mission-Mendoza slum or the Fillmore-Coolidge slum. They're all in Costa Mesa and they all fit the definition of slum.

But, what can Smith's type of low consciousness denying of our problems lead to?

It can lead to innocent citizens being lulled into a false sense of security about the nature of the problems.

You may recall that a Daily Pilot employee was murdered by an illegal alien who had been living in the Shalimar slum. Had she been aware of the potential danger, she might have been able to protect herself.

You may also recall that a young OCC student moved into the Mission-Mendoza slum and was murdered. Had she been aware of the potential danger, she may not have moved there.

You may recall that a 16-year-old girl was murdered behind Estancia High School by a man who then fled to Mexico. Had she been made aware of the potential danger, she might be alive today.

You may recall that a 15-year-old pregnant girl living in a garage on the Westside was murdered along with her unborn child when a gang member shot through the garage door. Had citizens been aware of such living arrangements, and acted, she and her child might be alive today.

You may recall the drive-by shootings in the Mission-Mendoza, the Shalimar and the Fillmore-Coolidge slums that happened about two years ago.

It goes on and on.

As is usual with lefties, Smith offers no facts or figures in his column. He just spouts off.

So, the CM PRESS will make the same challenge to Smith that we made with another low consciousness lefty recently:

Smith, give us the facts and figures, the actual statistics, that show that Costa Mesa is not trending more like Santa Ana, than our natural sister city Newport Beach, and we'll pick up the pom poms, put on our rose colored glasses, and join you in what, as of this writing, seems to us to be a species of the "be true to your school" cheer (usually mouthed by young students who have not yet developed critical thinking skills or child-like adult lefties).

MORE NEOCON WARMONGERING PROPAGANDA

Here's the headline that showed up on Drudge and some other sites today: "Iran vows to strike USA if attacked." Link

Sounds like the Iranians want to nuke New York or Los Angeles, doesn't it? That's what the warmongering neocons want you to think. They want to whip up war fever in the U.S. for an attack on Iran.

However, when you follow the link (also from Drudge), you have to read way down in the article that wasn't even given the almost hysterical Drudge headline shown above to find that an Iranian simply said that if the U.S. attacks Iran, that Iran will attack U.S. forces in the middle east.

That's hardly an earth shattering statement. Any nation that is attacked can be expected to attack the troops that are attacking it.

If the U.S. posed a threat to Monaco (which is smaller than Central Park in NY) or Mexico or Iceland, someone in those nations would also say that if the U.S. attacked, they'd attack our troops right back.

Big deal.

MORE INFORMATION ON THE TOP SECRET FAIRGROUNDS SALE
(Have faith in the City Government--remember, these are the folks who brought you Triangle Square)

Link

Wouldn't you like to know more about the negotiations on the sale of the Fairgrounds, since you will be affected in some way by whatever is decided in your name?

Look folks, secrecy is sometimes needed in negotiations, but if the City, as previously reported in the Daily Pilot, has the exclusive right to negotiate, then all this secrecy may not be needed.

Let's put this in other terms. Suppose you spot a house you want to buy. You then hire a real estate agent to present an offer on that house. The real estate agent (who will profit from what he does) tells you that you can't see the offer or know what he's negotiating. He then prepares and presents the offer that you will have to stand behind, even though you don't have a clue about what's in the offer.

His secret offer is finally accepted and you are stuck with a deal that you may not have agreed to had you been privy to the negotiations. Perhaps the purchase price is too high, or maybe the terms are onerous, or maybe you didn't get the concessions from the seller that you wanted.

Also remember this: In real estate transactions, the terms are more important than the final price.

Want a simple example? The CM PRESS will agree right here and now to buy the Fairgrounds for $300 million dollars. Our terms: We'll pay the state $ 10.00 per year until the $ 300 million is paid off.

By the way, it's already being stated (see the above linked Daily Pilot article) that the Fairgrounds will have to service the debt itself (we wonder if this will end up as the case) when and if a deal is reached. This means that the uses of the Fairgrounds will have to be intensified.

Thus, get ready for more loud music if you live near the Fairgrounds and get ready for more traffic.

And, here's something else to think about. We believe that the Great Park wants to be the venue for the annual OC Fair. So, will we end up with dueling fairs, or no fair at all at the Costa Mesa Fairgrounds? And, if so, how much revenue will Costa Mesa lose under either of these possibilities?

MANSOOR SAYS HE IS LOSING FAITH IN THE FAIRGROUNDS PURCHASE PROCESS

At last night's City Council meeting, Mayor Mansoor took Flopsy Foley to task for what Mansoor said was Foley's premature release of Fairgrounds purchase information to the press that was discussed in a closed session of the Council.

Flopsy defended herself by saying that she had received permission from the City Manager to release the information.

What we can know for sure: If closed session information was to be released, then at a bare minimum, the Mayor should have been the one to release it or to authorize it and he most certainly shouldn't have been kept out of the loop as was apparently the case.

So...was Flopsy just trying to get her name in the paper again? That's what it looks like.

But, it get's worse. Flopsy and Gary Monahan have now been named as a two person committee to somehow keep an eye on the negotiations as the purchase process goes forward and report back to the full Council, in closed session, what they learn.

Folks, given the above and with some Kentucky windage thrown in, the CM PRESS is also concerned about the way this possible purchase of the Fairgrounds is being handled.

Our fear is that the citizens of Costa Mesa are going to end up with the short end of the stick on this.

Frankly, we'd like to know the connections and relationships that exist between any and all negotiators or other major players in the negotiations and any City Council members.

POEM OF THE DAY

'IF' by Rudyard Kipling

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master,
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

TEA PARTY NOW MAINSTREAM
Link

The above linked CSM article makes a couple of points that the CM PRESS has previously made:

1. The Tea Party isn't mostly angry "White men," because many, if not most, of the Tea Partiers are women. They are White, though.

2. Although Tea Partiers have been called racist (ho hum) because most are White, their real motivation is less about race than it is about their own self-interest.

And, on this last point; that one can easily gloss over if read too fast, the fact is that Whites are starting to recognize the fact that they do have interests that may be different from other races and that it is Whites who are being told to go to the rear of the bus in present day America.

Whites are starting to realize that failing schools, high violent crime rates, growing welfarism, and various other social problems aren't really White problems at all, but that they are being told they have to shut up about these problems and pay for them lest they be called racists. *

*Regular readers may recall how a local lefty recently stepped in it in the pages of the CM PRESS when he claimed that Costa Mesa schools are as good as schools in Newport Beach, and we challenged that claim. (We'll be kind and omit his name here.)

He then inadvertently made our point when he triumphantly wrote that the White students in Costa Mesa schools are scoring as high on standardized tests as White students in Newport Beach schools.

Yes, exactly. Thank you for making our point. Failing schools in Costa Mesa are not a White problem. That's the point. The fact that school statistics show that Costa Mesa schools are trending like Santa Ana schools is because the test score averages are being artificially lowered by those pulling down the higher White scores.
