MY UNION--SAG-AFTRA--LOOKING AT SAFETY ISSUES ON LOHAN SET


SAG (now SAG-AFTRA) has lots of rules to protect actors.  I once got a gig in a national wine commercial that was to air for 30 seconds.

It took all day from early morning to after dark to get it shot.  Actually, that was mainly because the commercial was being shot up in the wine country and the location finders apparently didn't know that about a half mile on the other side of the beautiful vineyards that were in every shot, that there were train tracks.  And, on those train tracks there was a train.  A very slow moving train.  A train that kept moving out of the shot and then backing up into the shot again. All day long. Cut. Action. Cut. Action. Cut.

 And, the production company had to provide all sorts of things for us actors.  We had special chairs. A specially catered lunch, many breaks in the shooting and on and on.  All to just say a couple of lines.  I think my line was something like: "That looks good." [But, what is my motivation?  And, sorry, I muffed my line can we re-shoot? Huh?  There's a fly in my wine.You want more feeling? Remember, as we were taught by Stella Adler, there is no such thing as a small part.]

The scene was supposed to be a Thanksgiving Dinner on the porch of a farm house.  I was one of the family members.  They had a real cooked turkey on the table.  They had about 10 cooked turkeys and they were all sprayed with bug spray to keep the flies away, and the turkey had to be changed for each retake if we had gotten far enough [train permitting] to start carving it.  The production company also had about 100 wine glasses that had to be changed constantly.

The production company even brought along a carpenter, some grips, a greens man and many other trades.

All of this, mind you, was for a lousy 30 second TV commerical.

I remember back to when I was acting on the stage in New York and when Robert DeNiro and I did a play together at Bastiano's Cellar Studio, which was a theater in the basement of an Italian restaurant in Greenwich Village, and the stage would flood when any of the cast would flush the toilet.

So, I went from that no budget acting experience, where I played several characters with lots of lines, to a 30 second commercial that looked like a major Hollywood studio had come to town and where I had one line (but, I was great with that one line if I do say so myself).  Thanks, SAG-AFTRA, and keep those residuals coming.

Jeep Liberty

We have now received confirmation that the suspects who robbed the jewelry store on Newport Blvd. on Monday were four Black males.

Now, why was it so difficult to get a full description of outstanding violent criminal suspects from the CMPD?  You know why.  If not, then you haven't been reading the CM PRESS closely enough.

BTW--and for the Good Whites and PC crowd--the woman who recently stabbed her mother in Costa Mesa was also Black, but we didn't put that in our original story since she had already been arrested.

The point is that when violent criminal suspects are outstanding, it just makes sense to publish full descriptions to help with their capture and also to help citizens stay safe in case the suspects attempt to strike again in the same area.

The original non-description released by the CMPD was that the suspects were four males in a red Jeep Liberty.

Now, folks, if the criminals have any smarts at all, the jeep was stolen and was quickly abandoned. But, with that original description in mind, other jewelry store employees might be on their guard and  looking out for a red jeep and four otherwise unidentified males.  As  a result, they might be the next victims if the suspects show up in a different vehicle, and maybe just two or three of them go into the store.

With this fuller description of the suspects, citizens can be a little more wary and more alert

Previous dopes on the City Council have tried to justify giving money to liberal non-profits in this city by saying that the money being given is going into this or that program that helps "children."

Well, you dumb asses, money is fungible.  You give money to a non-profit and it helps cover their overhead, including salaries, and this frees up other money that can be used for liberal causes.

We had a so-called conservative on the City Council a few years ago who was so stupid that he thought he was going to win over the liberals to his side by agreeing with them and giving them things.  Then, when it came time for his reelection, not only did conservatives not vote for him, his new best friends, the liberals, also didn't vote for him and he lost the election.

Will we see some of that dynamic in the election this year?  Stay tuned.  The CM PRESS is watching and listening and we're weighing the decisions of the present Councilmembers and the comments of others running for the Council.

The CM PRESS would like to see all the CDBG money used for infrastructure repairs on the Westside, and maybe some of it can be used to fund the 19th Street sign that still hasn't gone up.

Oh, did we mention that Crissy and Wendy Leece are apparently pals and that Wendy links to MIKA on her blog?  Good grief, again!

The CM PRESS emailed the CMPD, the City Manager, several City Councilmembers and Bill Lobdell yesterday in an attempt to get a description of the robbers.  So far, we haven't received a reply from a single one of them.

NICE COLUMN ABOUT WHAT'S GOING ON IN EGYPT


Brief version:  The military is trying to take over the country and stay in power, while the Muslim Brotherhood is ramping up its rhetoric against this happening.

So, suppose you're the generals in charge of the military.  Right now you're weighing your options and trying to figure the odds.  If you try to stay in power, can you convince the majority of Egyptians that this is for their own good and thus head off a challenge from the Muslim Brotherhood, or will the people reject you and take to the streets to force you out of power?  And, if they do take to the streets and force you out of power, will they kill you?

Stay tuned, things are happening very fast in Egypt, and what happens there is going to have short and long range effects on the U.S. in many ways.

O.C. REGISTER ARTICLE ABOUT 60-YEAR-OLD RESTAURATEUR WHO IS A NEW FATHER


So, what's the big deal in that?

Nature has set things up to help with the survival of the species in an ever changing universe. One of the ways it has done this is to set different biological clocks in men and women.

Nature is a frugal engineer and doesn't do things without a purpose.  There is purpose in having two different biological clocks.

Here's what we mean.  Women get all their eggs just once, and those eggs must last them through all their child bearing years.  Those eggs and the genetic codes within them are stable and are set at the time the woman develops them. They'll remain that way until they are all gone.


Men, on the other hand, constantly produce new sperm, and this continues into old age. Because men are constantly producing new sperm, the genetic code within the sperm is also constantly produced and can be changed before it impregnates the woman's egg.  This is nature's way of allowing changes in the genetic code so children who are produced will have a better chance of surviving as things in the world change.

Something as seemingly minor as changes in temperature cause changes in the male's genetic code contained in his sperm.  These changes are then passed on to the new child in the 23 chromosomes that the male contributes to the new child.

However, nature doesn't want the species to change too fast, because changes in the environment may just be temporary.

So, to create some stability, the child receives a preset 23 chromosomes from the mother.

Because of the plasticity of their genetic codes, men are the main source of changes in the species, while women keep things from spinning out of control with their more stable genetic contribution.

DAILY PILOT ARTICLE ABOUT PROPERTY CRIMES BEING UP IN COSTA MESA

Folks, don't be one of those pitiful and neurotic Good Whites.  If you see something or someone suspicious, call the CMPD at (714) 754-5252.  They'll ask for your name, but you can just say you're a citizen and not give it.  They'll still respond to your call.

What is suspicious?
--People "selling" door to door with no permit from Costa Mesa. They have to have one.
 --Strange persons sauntering slowly through your neighborhood seeming to pay unusual attention to homes on both sides of the street.
--Persons who just look out of place in your neighborhood. Just use your common sense.
--Many burglars are slim and agile--it's kind of natural selection demanding this for their trade.

As we've reported before, the CM PRESS foiled one burglary in progress and stopped one burglar before he got into a house.

In the first case, the CM PRESS heard glass breaking in a neighbor's house and we were able to see a pair of legs of someone who was wriggling through the broken window and who was almost completely in the house.

We called the CMPD and they came out and went through the house and said there was no one there.  We knew they were mistaken, because we had staked out the house after we had called the police, and we were certain the burglar was still inside.  So, as the cops were getting ready to leave, we raised a stink and insisted that they do a more thorough search because we were convinced the burglar was still inside.  The cops reluctantly called for a police dog and the dog finally located the burglar who had gotten up into the attic space and was hiding in the insulation.

Had we not been very pushy in insisting the cops search again, who knows what might have happened to the elderly woman who lived alone in that house when she returned latter in the evening.

In the second case, we saw a guy sauntering through our neighborhood checking out all the houses. He seemed to be particularly looking at ones with no cars out front.  We called the CMPD and they stopped the guy and found that he was an illegal alien and that he was carrying burglar tools.

If your gut tells you someone or something is suspicious, call the CMPD at (714) 754-5252.  If you're mistaken, no harm, no foul, but if you're right, you might help with crime prevention.

Why?

Demographics, plain and simple.

You cannot understand the so-called "human condition" if you lump all humans together as one group, any more than you can understand dogs if you lump them together as one group.

You need to know the race/ethnicity of humans and you need to know the breed of dogs.

Don't like it?  Go take it up with nature.

NEW: Be sure to read the comments following the worst performing schools to see what numbnuts some people in Costa Mesa really are. The scores are almost as low as they can go and some of  the people commenting seem to think everything is fine.

ABOUT THAT ARREST OF A WOMAN AT MOTHER'S MARKET

Every Con law student studies the Pruneyard decision. (Yes, the CM PRESS even studied that case.)

The woman arrested the other day at Mother's Market for gathering signatures on a marijuana petition is apparently relying on that decision.

Basically, the Pruneyard is a shopping center, and students were distributing literature there.  Pruneyard management kicked them out. The students sued and won after the court reasoned that the Pruneyard shopping center was pretty much like a town square in the old days and thus was a proper place to exercise free speech rights. After all, what's the point of free speech unless you can go to where people can hear you?

However, subsequent decisions have weakened Pruneyard.

In a later case, COSTCO  kicked people out of its parking lot who were distributing fliers, and COSTCO won the case.  Why?  The court distinguished between Pruneyard, which is a multi-tenant center (similar to Fashion Island), which the court reasoned was the equivalent of a town square with its many different stores, that attract a wide variety of people from the community, and COSTCO, which was a stand alone store like Mother's Market.

Don't go away yet.  There's another twist.

The woman who was arrested at Mother's Market had set up her table for signature gathering directly in front of a tall, closed cylindrical kiosk that serves as a community bulletin board, so she might reasonably argue that this was, in fact, a free speech zone--similar to the old town squares--and that she shouldn't have been arrested.

Next stop the courts to decide this.

And, by the way, it doesn't matter whether she was gathering signatures for marijuana legalization or for reducing property taxes as the content of her speech is not the issue.

ODD EXCHANGE AT THE CITY COUNCIL STUDY SESSION TODAY


After Councilmember Leece burbled on aimlessly while trying to showboat about public safety and how she opposes cutting any police officers, Mayor Bever looked right at CEO Tom Hatch and asked Hatch if he would agree that every Councilmember is concerned about public safety.


Hatch then surprised observers when he didn't give the expected and de rigueur answer that in his opinion all Councilmembers are concerned about public safety.  Instead, he replied that the Councilmembers could speak for themselves.

This caused Bever to give Hatch the stinkeye (?) or maybe just a long stare with daggers.

Then again, perhaps, the CM PRESS--sitting in the rear of the room with the rest of the bad kids--just wasn't close enough to get a proper reading of the looks and what happened.

Still, we're sticking with stinkeye, until someone tells us differently.

Earlier in the meeting, the new interim City Clerk mispronounced Councilmember Mensinger's name as Messenger.  She's freshly minted, so her faux pas isn't a big deal.

However, there are many others who should know better but who constantly get his name wrong.  This is absurd, because the guy's name spells itself:  MEN SINGER--how friggin' hard is that to remember?

UCI SCIENTISTS CREATE MALARIA-PROOF MOSQUITO

Genocide is planned for certain genes.

The plan is to release this genetically modified mosquito into the wild where it is hoped its genes will spread throughout the mosquito population and replace the genes that allow its wild cousins
to carry the malaria virus.

The real story is that gene transfer between different populations has the potential to wipe out a population by changing it.


This applies to humans just as it does to mosquitoes.

Of course, if the genes of modified mosquitoes do not give mosquitoes a survival advantage over the genes in the wild population, the genes of the modified mosquitoes will die off.  This also applies to humans.

LATINO GANG ATTACK IN COSTA MESA PARK


EDITED FOR CLARITY CMPD PRESS RELEASE:

On Sunday, June 10, 2012, at approximately 3:45 p.m., Costa Mesa Police responded to a reported fight occurring near the handball courts at Shiffer Park.  

Upon arrival, officers made contact with a Hispanic male victim in the company of two companions.  The victim was unconscious and had suffered multiple blows, primarily to his head.  It was learned the victim, a 19-year old male, is affiliated with a Santa Ana based gang and was at the park with non-gang acquaintances, playing handball.  Unbeknownst to the victim, a group of Hispanic subjects, who are alleged to be from a rival Santa Ana based gang, had come to the park to meet.  Those subjects confronted the victim, inquiring where he was from.  The victim was then assaulted by up to seven (7) subjects from the rival gang, primarily hitting and kicking the victim in the head. 

The suspects fled the park in what were described as possibly three separate vehicles, all in a northbound direction toward Santa Ana.  The vehicles were described as two Lincoln or similar SUV’s—one black and one white—as well as what was described as a dark colored Chevy Impala sedan, with chrome wheels. 

The victim was treated at the scene by paramedics and transported to Western Medical Center, initially in serious condition.  He is continues to be treated for his injuries and is currently listed in stable condition.  The victim’s name is being withheld over concerns for his welfare.

The Costa Mesa Police Department requests that anyone with information regarding this incident, contact the Gang Investigations Unit, Officer Jason Chamness @ (714) 754-5055, or the Investigative Services Bureau @ (714) 754-5205.

There is no additional information.

Well, we just got an email from one of the folks we contacted and he said he had trouble finding the plans also, but did find them HERE.


So, the Westside Plans are actually there, but they're hard to find.  Here's our suggestion for how they should be displayed and right on the first page of the City's Website:
