HAITI STILL HASN'T RECOVERED FROM THE EARTHQUAKE AND THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC ISN'T LETTING THE HAITIANS CROSS THE BORDER
Link
Haiti and the Dominican Republic both share the same island. They have the same weather and other natural conditions.
Haiti is a hell hole and the Dominican Republic isn't.
Why is that the case?
See if you can figure it out from these facts from the CIA World Factbook:
The Dominican Republic has 9,823,821 residents. Haiti has 9,648,924 residents.
73% of the residents of the Dominican Republic are mixed race. 16% are white. 11% are black.
95% of the residents of Haiti are black. 5% are mulatto and white.
Maybe you need more facts. Just go to the CIA World Factbook and see if you can come up with other facts that might demonstrate some cause and effect about why the two countries on the same relatively small island are so different. We'd like to hear what you come up with as a theory. Really.
Until we hear a reasonable theory, we'll rely on our belief that genes are us.

ARIZONA REPUBLIC RIPS LEFTY SHERIFF DUPNIK
Link
Dupnik is the lefty who has been whining about the right wing and Rush Limbaugh. He also opposes Arizona's law against illegal aliens. Figures, right?
Dupnik reminds us of a couple of former lefty cops in Costa Mesa who sometimes used their positions to whine about similar things and who seemed to be trying to stir up people into believing in some sort of right wing racist conspiracy whenever anyone spoke out about the problem of illegal aliens in Costa Mesa.
And, we believe that there are still a few lefty cops and civilian employees like that in the CMPD. We call them "the clique."

COSTA MESA TAXPAYERS FOOTING THE BILL FOR OUT OF TOWN SPORTS TEAMS
The City of Costa Mesa leases sports fields on many elementary school campuses from the NMUSD to the tune of about $ 200,000 per year.
The City then lets some sports team organizers use those fields for free.
The rub 1: Those sports team organizers charge their players to be on the teams and they apparently then pocket the money instead of paying some of it to Costa Mesa for the use of the fields.
The rub 2: Some of these organizers are from Santa Ana.
The Rub 3: The way Costa Mesa's Recreation Division has set things up, Osama Bin Laden could get free use of our fields and the City Council wouldn't be able to stop him.
What the CM PRESS would like to see: We'd like to see the regulations changed so the City Council has the final say on who can and who can't use our fields and on what basis and how much they should pay.
And, we'd like to see the City at least break even on the use of these fields, instead of picking the pockets of taxpayers of Costa Mesa.

| BUST OF CHARLEMAGNE |
MORE ON THE POLYGAMY CASE IN CANADA
In an age when people are being told that homosexual marriage is as normal as heterosexual marriage and that the former provides a proper environment for children, there are those who are trying to prove that polygamous marriage between males and females is wrong and a bad environment for children.
How does one sort it all out?
Look to nature. Nature screams out to all living things to make more like themselves. To do otherwise is to become extinct.
Those organisms that have the most offspring like themselves who in turn are also able to carry on and make more like themselves, survive. Those that don't make more like themselves, die off. This is true of individual organisms and groups of organisms.
Someone we know did some genealogical research and found that she was descended from Charlemagne.
But before this person could get an ego boost from this, she learned that about half of all European descended peoples (read White people) living today have Charlemagne in their family trees, as he had children by a number of different wives and other women (sort of serial polygamy). And, these children followed in dad's footsteps and also had many children with different wives and women and so on and so on.
It is clear from this that the particular genetic recipe that made Charlemagne was a successful one since it has survived down the centuries while others have died off.
Had Charlemagne been gay or had he not had many children with many women, history might be very different. In fact, you might not be here to read this.

HIRE LOCALLY--PUT COSTA MESANS TO WORK
California has a misguided law that keeps cities from demanding that city employees actually live in the city that pays them.
Other states have a better idea. Massachusetts, for example, has no such law, and the city of Boston requires that everyone who works for the city lives in Boston. If any city employee if found to be fudging on this, they're fired.
The CM PRESS believes that Costa Mesa City employees should live in Costa Mesa.
This means our firefighters, our cops and everyone else.
Now, if Costa Mesa were as expensive as Newport Beach, an argument could be made that having low ranking city employees live in the city might be a hardship. But, Costa Mesa is not as expensive as Newport Beach.
We'd like to see the new City Council let it be known that the City wants to encourage all city employees to live in Costa Mesa, and we'd like to see the City Council make sure that people who live in Costa Mesa get first consideration for new jobs.
In addition, we'd like to see the City Council let department heads know that it would be "nice" if they moved to Costa Mesa as soon as possible.

CM PRESS # 370
Back in CM PRESS # 355 we published Wendy Leece's "answer" to our questions about where she stood on improving Costa Mesa.
Here's what she wrote us: "I will be brief. Regarding the improvement of the Westside of Costa Mesa, where I have lived for nearly 40 years, I believe in the overlay and hope to bring the highest quality developments with the lowest density possible."
Sounds good, right? Well, when Wendy says something, it can apparently mean just about anything.
The local GOP learned that when she allegedly promised to not vote for the union contracts and then voted for them.
Here's another example. At the City Council meeting on Tuesday, Wendy voted to have Chris McEvoy take Katrina Foley's seat.
McEvoy doesn't want the overlay that Wendy says she wants.
So, how does Wendy reconcile her avowed desire for the overlay and her vote for McEvoy?
Got us.
And, as we also mentioned previously, how in the world can Wendy think that Costa Mesa isn't in a financial mess as she said when she scolded Jim Righeimer, also at Tuesday's City Council meeting, when he told the plain truth about this?

We wrote about this before and said it doesn't give the Marines the best bang for the buck and should be cancelled. The weakness of this vehicle results from it being an ocean landing vehicle.

WANT A CHUCKLE?
Go to the DAILY PILOT story [HERE] about Steve Mensinger being appointed to the City Council last night and read some of the comments. You'll see "MENSINGER" spelled different ways. Also, you'll see one of McEvoy's supporters even spelling McEvoy's name wrong as she whines that the Council didn't listen to the voters.
Actually, the Council did listen. I was there. I saw all the Councilmembers looking right at each speaker and I didn't see any ear plugs in the Councilmembers ears. They couldn't help but listen to what in some cases were really stupid, rambling comments from people who probably shouldn't be encouraged to vote at all.
# # #
IT SHOULD BE AN INTERESTING TIME IN COSTA MESA POLITICS

With the selection of Steve Mensinger to take Katrina Foley's seat on the City Council, the die is cast for a very interesting and hopefully a productive new era for the Council and for Costa Mesa.
Hints were given about what we'll be seeing and hearing in the coming months by a few terse comments from three of the Councilmembers.
Jim Righeimer said that the city is in a financial mess and it needs to be fixed.
Wendy Leece got angry and scolded Righeimer for saying that. Then, Leece said that Costa Mesa is not in a financial mess. Huh? Someone asked us if Leece is completely bonkers or just stupid. We referred that person to John Moorlach's satement that Leece is not qualified to be a Councilmember.
Leece also refused to vote for Mensinger and voted for Chris McEvoy.
Often, when it is clear that someone other than your fav is going to win, politicians will withdraw their earlier vote and vote for the winner so the record shows a unanimous vote. This also sends a signal that the politician will work with the winner and doesn't have any sour grapes. Leece didn't do this and as a result she looks petty and small.
Mensinger indicated that he's for smaller government.
And, speaking of McEvoy. He and his supporters don't seem to understand how things work. Many of these supporters told the Council that McEvoy should get the nod because he came in third and got lots of votes even though he didn't spend any money on his campaign.
Righeimer corrected that "re-writing of history" by saying that eight different unions had pumped a couple of hundred thousand dollars into the campaign in trying to elect McEvoy.
Even with that information, which one would think McEvoy would understand, McEvoy said that he'll win election the next time he runs.
Actually, we doubt that. As we mentioned above, McEvoy only got as many votes as he got because of the unions having no other real choice in their attempt to seat a puppet and defeat Righeimer.
If McEvoy runs next time, the field is going to be much different and the unions (if they have not been completely decimated) will have a more viable candidate or candidates to push as their puppet(s).
And in a larger sense, and if our instincts are correct, Costa Mesa is going to be very different in two years in many ways.

GASGATE, A PALACE COUP AND A DEEP THROAT INSIDE THE CMPD?
William Lobdell over at the Daily Pilot says he's found some clues that may explain why Costa Mesa Police Chief Christopher Shawkey and Captain Ron Smith have been put on leave. Link
The clues involve the amount of gas that Chief Shawkey has been putting in his city owned car with the city's credit card, and the gas stations where the gas was purchased, which are mostly far from Costa Mesa.
Now, it really may be that Lobdell just followed public hints that have "leaked" out about Shawkey reportedly spending a lot of time away from the job, and decided to check the Chief's expense records, which Lobdell says are public records.
But, some wags are wondering if someone inside the CMPD--perhaps in the motor pool; since most of Lobdell's guesses start with the Chief's car--in concert with some others in the department, may have contacted Lobdell with odometer readings and other information about the Chief's car, and that this may be what spurred Lobdell to obtain further information.
And, if the wags are guessing right, is there some sort of internal struggle going on within the CMPD to get rid of Shawkey for some reason?
Could it be that he's not playing ball with the clique that many believe exists within the department and which has links to some former employees?
Oh, and remember, one CMPD officer is in hot water for using a CMPD tracking device to stalk a woman. Could someone have put such a device on the Chief's car?
From the above, you can see how easy it is to weave a web of intrigue when our local government doesn't have transparency and when it lets things just fester for long enough.
Come on City Hall, shed some light on what's going on to stop the rumors. And, while you're at it, how about the results of the Stink Eye investigation and the investigation of the officers who spoke to the press after the Righeimer DUI checkpoint issue?
Also, how did Lobdell get access to the Chief's expense account records? When the CM PRESS has tried to get some very basic information such as current percentages of officers who don't live in Costa Mesa, we've been rebuffed.
We're for transparency, but in this day of stalking and terrorism is it true that anyone can walk into City Hall and get the expense account records of a chief of police and know his movements and where he and his family are or where they may be at some time? Maybe this needs to be looked into.

CAN WE IMPROVE COSTA MESA'S TWO HIGH SCHOOLS BY MAKING THEM FOOTBALL SCHOOLS?
We think so. High schools with top rated football programs attract attention. They also attract students who may not be interested in football at all, but who want to be associated with the school and its reputation.

ARIZONA GOVERNOR VS. PHOENIX SUNS OWNER[Here's something someone just sent us.]
The owner of the Phoenix Suns basketball team, Robert Sarver, opposes AZ's new immigration laws.
Arizona 's Governor, Jan Brewer, released the following statement in response to Sarver's criticism of the new law:
"What if the owners of the Suns discovered that hordes of people were
sneaking into games without paying? What if they had a good idea who the
gate-crashers are, but the ushers and security personnel were not allowed to
ask these folks to produce their ticket stubs, thus non-paying attendees
couldn't be ejected. Furthermore, what if Suns' ownership was expected to
provide those who sneaked in with complimentary eats and drink? And what if,
on those days when a gate-crasher became ill or injured, the Suns had to
provide free medical care and shelter?"
- Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer
