SHRILL CHICKEN LITTLES PANICKING OVER COSTA MESA BUDGET HOLE

Look folks, Costa Mesa did what all governments do: In cash flush years it expanded to use all the money it could get in taxes and fees.

Now, it needs to cut back, get rid of some of the fat, and act more responsibly. It, just like you and your family, has to live within its means.

What do we mean?

In a metaphorical sense, in the cash flush past, instead of buying normal bathroom fixtures, it bought gold ones. Instead of buying Fords, it bought Bentleys.

In a real sense, in the past, instead of buying a perfectly good helicopter for $ 500,ooo like many cities, it bought a deluxe one for $1.5 million.

Instead of using city vehicles until their useful lives were gone, it bought new ones to send pick and shovel employees out to dig a hole.

Instead of letting people find their own ways to watch their kids after school, it gave free day care--so illegal aliens could then hang out on street corners looking for day work while the citizens paid for their baby sitting. And it then gave some of your money to non-profits that brought in more illegal aliens who needed more baby sitting and more police officers to handle the problems and...and...and....

Instead of fixing roads when they need it, it fixed them before they needed it.

Instead of mowing the grass at reasonable intervals, it mowed more. And, what's with all the grass? We should be planting drought tolerant plants on our medians. We'd save a bundle on water and maintenance.

And, it goes on and on and on. Go to any City Council meeting and you'll see the Council spending your money like drunken sailors. They'll rubber stamp just about anything that is put in front of them.

One part of the problem is that there are those who think the government should be a nanny and do everything.

"Oh, where will we hear music, if the city doesn't pay for lousy bands playing old unoriginal music in the park."

"Oh, who will baby sit our children when we stand on the corner looking for work?"

"Oh, we need a community garden so a handful of us can plant carrots while the rest of the citizens pay for it."

Government's "need" for money expands to and beyond what government can take.

It's time to right-size Costa Mesa's government and it's time for citizens to practice a little self-reliance instead of expecting to be cared for in every way by the government.

1. The operating partner of the Fairgrounds--American Fairs and Festivals--will make mortgage payments of $5.5 million a year.

2. To make those payments, American Fairs and Festivals will "enhance the operations of the Fairgrounds."

Essentially, this sounds a lot like a long term lease, between the landlord, the City of Costa Mesa, and the master tenant, American Fairs and Festivals, which may run concurrently with the mortgage for 40 years.

Get ready for many lawsuits over the next years even if the deal leaves very few loose ends; and, in a deal that is as fast tracked as this one, there may be more than a few loose ends.

We doubt that will happen. Here's why: If Arizona prevails--and we think it will--it may set a nation wide precedent and start returning rights to the states that the Feds have usurped over the past several decades.

Furthermore, we think the Supreme Court may reason, as we did in an earlier CM PRESS, that you can always delegate your authority, but you can never delegate your responsibility.

In other words, if the Feds don't do the job that you have delegated to them, you may revoke that delegation and do the job yourself.

Or, in even other words, you don't have to be a helpless victim of crime just because the cops don't show up.

Hopefully, the City will save some jobs by cutting programs that help illegal aliens.

It just came to my attention that my friend's son was approached on 4/28 and 4/30 at approximately 6:55am by two different cars. My friend's 6th grader walks to Killybrooke from the French Quarter every morning to catch the school bus to Sonora. He leaves the French Quarter at 6:50am and walks down Garlingford. Each time he was approached was mid block on Garlingford. Fortunately, nothing happened to him and he is aware of "Stranger Danger" so he knew what to do. However, the situation is very frightening.

On 4/28 a beat up gray pick-up truck with gardening tools with two Hispanic men followed my friend's son very slowly, staring at my him to the point where he felt very uncomfortable. There was no verbal contact.

On 4/30 a black sedan with one man who looked Hispanic approached my friend's son. The man was bald and had tattoos on the back of his neck and head. He was described as being thin, muscular, and in his 20's or 30's. The man asked, "Hey kid, do you want some candy and go for a joy ride?" My friend's son ignored him and kept walking to Killybrooke. The man continued to slowly follow him and began to turn into the Killybrooke parking lot, but the school gardeners scared him away. The man left via Killybrooke Lane.

The police have been notified and my friend's son is no longer allowed to walk to Killybrooke to catch the bus to Sonora. I would appreciate it if you notified everyone in your database to keep an eye out to protect all our children.
