More and more whites are getting fed up with the double standard and are speaking up.

WHERE WE STAND ON COSTA MESA'S GOVERNMENT

The CM PRESS supports any efforts of the City Council to save money, to be transparent, to right size government, to let people alone, and to spend money correctly and do the things necessary to improve Costa Mesa and especially the Westside.

We've always supported those things, and over the years we've been frustrated by former liberal City Councils that seemed to be taking just the opposite position on most things.

You could probably fill a couple of small boxes with the requests for information and complaints we've made to city hall over the years about different things that the government was doing that we felt were wrong.

Now that there is a more conservative City Council, we haven't changed.  We still want the same things from this Council as we did when the liberals were running the joint.

With the above in mind, we have to tell you that we're glad to see some libs now playing the role that we previously played.

The way we keep government honest and doing what it should be doing, and not doing what it shouldn't be doing, is by constantly asking questions and by keeping our city officials on their toes.

It is the people of Costa Mesa who own this city.  We have delegated certain of our authority to city government to do things in our stead, but we have not delegated our responsibility.

It is the people of Costa Mesa who are ultimately responsible for the type of city we have.

Some of us take that responsibility seriously and we stay involved.  If you're not involved, you should try to find some time to get involved.

SO THE EMPLOYEE ASSOCIATION IS GOING TO COURT...SO WHAT?

It doesn't really matter.

Even if the court issues an injunction and even if the court says that Costa Mesa is bound by various provisions of the law from a mass layoff of employees, nothing will change that is essential.

You see, the Council's main thrust has never been to just lay off employees. That idea was one of many possible means to the real goals.

The real goals are to get our financial house in order, to right size the government and to find ways to get the best price for the services the government supplies to residents.

In other words, as Costa Mesa government becomes more businesslike it is trying to give the best value  to residents for the money they give to the government.

Issuing six month lay off notices was a contractual requirement in order for the Council to pursue just one of many strategies to achieve its goals.

There are, as they say in the boardrooms, many ways to skin a cat.

  1. "Now that there is a more conservative City Council, we haven't changed." Mr. Millard, be honest: There has been a conservative majority for over eight years. Alan Mansoor made a big deal about illegals but did NOTHING, despite a majority. Why do you let these incompetents get a free pass? Leece and Foley were only two votes during that time - a minority - yet you blame them for everything. Answer this, please.

  2. To Wondering: Mansoor did a good job while on the Council and helped with the process of improving the Westside. That process continues.

Hopefully, the chemistry is right on the Council now to speed things up. We'll see.

BTW, Wendy apparently thinks she's a conservative because she put "In God We Trust" on the wall. Others will say that does not a conservative make.

If you want to pursue this with additional questions, use your real name and I may go into this in greater depth.

Thanks for reading the CM PRESS.

  3. You're welcome. Don't always agree with you, but I appreciate that you stay with issues and hold civic leaders accountable. I disagree on Mansoor. I cannot point to a single lasting effect of his tenure - not one. And on his big issue, illegals, he just plain failed. There are as many as there was when he was here. The difference now is that no one is talking about them anymore. Maybe we should hold the new majority's feet to the fire on illegals. Or maybe the problem wasn't a problem at all.

  4. Recently while waiting to pickup my kid from a Costa Mesa elementary school, a mother and her toddler were also waiting to pick up a sibling. I asked the mother a question but she did not understand. I asked in my poor Spanish how long she had been living in the America. She said over 10 years. I then asked her how is her toddler going to learn English? She pointed to the school.

    End of conversation.

The sad thing is this is a common occurrence these days. This woman's refusal to assimilate and lack of interest in learning the language of her new home is disconcerting at the least. I think we have a big problem in this country and Costa Mesa is part of it.

Like it or not, at some point this or a future Council is going to have to readdress the efforts started by Alan Mansoor.

  5. FYI was walking through canyon park about half an hour ago and saw a man rolling on the ground screaming. He sounded drunk and looked homeless. Scraggly brown hair, possibly no shirt, jeans, and writing a yellow bike with a chrome basket. Police & Fire did a good job responding.

  7. Anonymous: Whether legal residents choose to assimilate is not up for discussion. If they are here legally, they can choose. I'm talking about illegals - the ones that Mansoor got us all worked up about and then left us for Sacramento with no plan to fix the problem and no advocate on the council. Mansoor is no friend to anyone on the westside - he did nothing but talk. We need a new champion on the council to take over this issue. But maybe as I wrote, it was never a problem in the first place, just a way to get elected to higher office. Sure seems like that to me.

  8. You will have to blame Ronald Reagan for the man rolling on the ground screaming. He closed all of the state mental hospitals back in 1967. The mentally ill have no place to go and they are suffering something awful. It's only going to get worse due to entitlement budget cuts. The mentally ill have already lost a lot of their services.

If a severely mentally ill person is not entitled to help, ....... who is? Oh, I forgot, ....... the illegal aliens.

  9. Wondering,

I am willing to bet you "dos pesos" that this woman and child I spoke about are illegal.

Still don't think we have an illegal immigration problem? Check this out and post a reply.
