HOMESCHOOLING REPORTEDLY GROWING SEVEN TIMES FASTER THAN PUBLIC SCHOOL ENROLLMENT

In the above linked article you'll read how "parents" are getting fed up with the public school system in this country and you'll also read that home schooled kids generally score higher on tests than those schooled in the public school system.

However, the article misses the reality of the homeschooling movement.  It is mostly being done by White parents and the subtext to the dissatisfaction with the public school system is not just about academics, but about the fact that most public schools in areas of the country with large numbers of non-Whites are also full of crime and social dysfunction and do not serve the needs of White students.

4 drivers were cited/arrested for having no DL.

COMPETE BETTER!

Nice article about the recent trip to Las Vegas for the ICSC convention by Mayor Righeimer, Mayor Pro Tem Mensinger, City CEO Hatch and some other city staff members.

I was also pleased to hear CEO Hatch say, at this week's City Council meeting, that Costa Mesa's need to compete for businesses.

This concept of competing  and competing better is inherent in nature, and being aware of it on a conscious level just helps Costa Mesa compete better instead of drifting aimlessly and hoping certain businesses will find us.

But, Costa Mesa also has to compete for the best citizens.  We need to attract upwardly mobile people to our city.  We do not need to attract downwardly mobile people here, as we are doing now.  We need to get rid of the slums and stop praising the charities that are acting as magnets.

A little psychology and philosophy about competing

The concept of competing relates to human psychology and the personal philosophy that each of us carries with us, whether we know it or not.

In my travels, I sometimes hear some people--often people who believe in all sorts of dark conspiracies-- say things such as: "They are against us.  They are keeping us down and won't let us succeed.  They control this or that industry. The problem is them."

My answer to those who think this way is that they need to compete better.

 In fact, when people say this about THEY or THEM,  what they are really saying is similar to someone who might say "I would have won that foot race, but others wouldn't let me win because they ran faster than me. I would have won, if there was no competition."

Compete better!  Don't expect others to slow down or to hobble themselves so you can win.  Get in the race and compete to win.

At last night's meeting, several Latino youths, and only Latino youths, went to the podium and said they are involved with the MIKA charity (that is supported by Wendy Leece) and that they want the city to provide them with a youth center on the Westside.

If the City does this, it will be making a mistake.  The Westside is trying to claw its way out of being a no-go ethnic ghetto, and opening yet another (there's already SOY) center that will just be for Latinos will help keep the area as an ethnic ghetto.  This will chase away upwardly mobile people and the downward spiral will continue.

To be clear, those pushing for this are not saying it will be Hispanic only, but that's what it will end up being.

CITY COUNCIL MAKES RIGHT DECISION AND TABLES TRAFFIC DEAL WITH BANNING RANCH

The Banning Ranch developers and Newport Beach have to be good neighbors to Costa Mesa, and simply sending all Newport Beach and Banning Ranch traffic through Costa Mesa is not being good neighbors.

Costa Mesa is not the city dump for Newport Beach and our city is not just a pass trough mini-highway so Newport can keep the traffic off its streets.

If Newport wants some things from Costa Mesa, then it should offer substantive things in return.  How about a beach for Costa Mesa?

You do recall, that Newport has about a one foot border around the Westside of Costa Mesa that connects up with that tiny bit of Newport Beach down at the end of W. 19th Street, don't you?

Why is that a part of Newport Beach, when the only way in and out is through Costa Mesa?  It's because there was once going to be a marina down there and Newport wants to hog everything near water.

Geez.  It's a wonder that Newport hasn't figured out how to put the new ponds in Fairview Park in Newport Beach.

Costa Mesa has no direct say on Banning Ranch, but we do have a say on the effects it can have on Costa Mesa.

We  need to negotiate the best deal we can for Costa Mesans.  And, just accepting several million dollars as hush money out front, is not good negotiating.  We need more to sweeten the pot.  Say, did  we mention that if Costa Mesa had a tiny beach by the mouth of the Santa Ana River that our city would then be a true coastal community?

THE DESTRUCTION OF AMERICA AS WE KNOW IT

A nation is its people. They are the primary ingredient in the recipe that makes a nation the way it is.

SHORT REVIEW OF ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT

Not as funny as the original.  Poor casting of some of the smaller parts. Timing off.  Writing is muddled. Direction needs direction. Idea of focusing individual episodes on  a different leading character isn't working.
Situations aren't always funny.

The original Arrested Development was side splitting funny with jokes, double entendres, and sight gags coming so fast that it was almost impossible to stop laughing.  The new Arrested Development has a few laughs but they're too far apart. It seems tired.

In the original series, Jason Bateman, who plays the relatively sane Michael, was a perfect unperturbed straight man whose acting was superb and subtle and was a perfect counterpoint to the rest of the cast.  In the present version, that seems to have been lost.

Performances by the rest of the cast also seem to be just a little off.  When you see so many good actors who made us laugh in the first series all unable to click, you really have to look at the direction and the script rather than the actors for answers as to what is going wrong.

Saving grace:  It's still funny.  It's just not as funny as the original.
