CM PRESS # 223

FORM SHOULD FOLLOW FUNCTION

(And, the function of W. 19th Street should not be just to be a mini-highway, but the main shopping street of the Westside.)

At tonight's Planning Commission meeting there was a presentation of how to improve W. 19th Street.

The CM PRESS was underwhelmed.

Look, folks, the vision that we and many others have of W. 19th Street is that it should be a hip, cafe street sharing the same vibes and customers who go to Mother's Market and the Triangle, as part of a lively, pedestrian friendly, and easy walking, several block area of Downtown Costa Mesa.  A destination location.  A place where people will come to congregate and spend their money.

We didn't get a sense that this is what was presented tonight.  Instead, we saw a presentation of some traffic islands and a couple of round-a-bouts and some palm trees; but nothing that said "pedestrian friendly," "come sit at one of our small tables on the sidewalk outside our cafe on a warm summer evening," "come into our sports bar," "come have dinner in one of our locally owned restaurants that have local character," "come into our boutique shops," "come to W. 19th Street, the main shopping district of the new Westside."

And, as far as the plants on the medians and sidewalks, we'd like to see them be more like what you see at the Camp up on Bristol Street--plants that look like they belong in our semi-arid area.

A SERIOUS DISCUSSION ABOUT RACE? DON'T LOOK AT THE WART ON THE FACE OF THE OTHER!
(c) 2013  H. Millard
Darwin's Finches--speciation

Several years ago, the Los Angeles Times had an editorial “Obama on race,” in which the Times had this subhead: “His speech proved to be that rarity in American politics--a serious discussion of race.”

Nonsense.

Barack Obama not only failed to scratch the surface about race, he didn’t even rub it very hard. I watched his speech and also followed along with a hard copy and it was just a shallow political speech.

Of course, to give Obama his due, one wouldn't expect a politician to try to offer a serious discussion of race in a political speech.

Such discussions are better aimed at people who know a little about the subject, or who have open, reasonably intelligent minds, and who are at least willing to learn something. Such discussions aren't the stuff of TV speeches that require quick sound bites before millions of people who often don’t know the first thing about the subject, and who have often been conditioned to believe that “race doesn’t exist” because, as is so vacuously and stupidly said, we all bleed red blood.

If you don’t get it, then just translate Obama’s speech about race into terms of automobiles and you would have had a 37 minute speech telling us no more than that there are different makes and models of automobiles and some have this paint job and some have this other paint job, but underneath--under the hood, where it really matters, don't you know--they are all identical automobiles.

That would be hardly a serious discussion of automobiles.  It makes a very basic and ham handed error in thinking by focusing on the  very broad term "automobile," and uses it to say that since all automobiles have certain features in common, they must be identical--oh, not in the things that you can see with your lying eyes--but, again, under the hood where it really matters. Yes, you must not believe your eyes.  You must believe that the things that you can't see are identical. And, those things that you can't see are what's important.  But, what if different makes and models of cars perform differently?  What if some are faster than others?  Well, you must not notice that, because that would point to differences under the hood and noticing differences is bad.  "Hey," says the well conditioned and low I.Q. mob as their eyes narrow to slits all at the same time "you're not some kind of automobilist, are you?  We don't like that kind of hate around these parts."

One might then go on to say that makes and models of automobiles aren't real, they're just social constructs.

No serious discussion of the sociological aspects of race--which is what the Times apparently believed Obama was attempting--can even begin unless there is a quick pre-discussion about how life began on Earth and about DNA and how the constant shuffling of just four chemicals abbreviated A,T,C and G make up the blueprints--or recipes, if you prefer--for all animal and plant life of which we are aware, including humans.

And a serious discussion would have touched a little on the reality of the twenty thousand or so genes (the most accepted estimate as of this writing) that humans carry and how they’re clustered on 46 chromosomes and how each parent contributes 23 chromosomes and how a new life is begun the moment the 23 chromosomes from the father and the 23 chromosomes from the mother join, and it would have mentioned genotypes (our internal blueprint) and phenotypes (the result of that internal blueprint) and why Obama, with a white mother and a black father, is not really half white and half black, but  black (recessive vs. dominant genes) and why Obama is lighter than his father and could not possibly have turned out as dark as his father or as light as his mother (skin tone is one of the few genetic traits that is truly blended).

And a serious discussion of race would discuss adaptations, mutations, evolution and even why natural selection favors white skin in northern climes and darker skin in southern climes (Vitamin D absorption) and about how humans are a little like Darwin’s finches in that geographic and reproductive isolation along with other factors mentioned above, caused the formation of races of humans as just a step along the path to eventual speciation.

And a serious discussion would have told listeners that race is real, just as genes are real, and that race is to humans what breed is to dogs and variety is to roses and that it is not “racism” (defined as hatred)  to actually and honestly discuss race and all of these things.

And a serious discussion of race would not try to deny nature, but seek to have people understand it, and it would have discussed why different medicines work in different ways in different races and how enlightened medical science is now taking race into account instead of pretending it doesn’t exist.

And that’s just for starters. But, such pedantry is not the proper stuff of political speeches and it would put many to sleep if a politician did try to discuss such things.

Furthermore, it doesn’t appear that most  people really want a serious discussion about race. Race is the wart on the Other's face that we mustn't stare at and which we must pretend isn't there. Most people today have been conditioned to believe (or at least to pretend they believe) that races don’t exist.  That such a false belief is anti-nature seems to allude the most conditioned among us.

And, they want to accept the nonsense that they should reject what their eyes--the king of the sense organs in our species, which we have so we can survive--tell them about different races looking different from each other.

Indeed, Americans have come to falsely believe that talking about differences is the equivalent of hate. In such an atmosphere, which is the modern equivalent of the once universally held belief that the earth is the center of the solar system, no serious discussion of race can occur.

So, we discuss race as though we’re trying not to look at what too many people consider to be a wart on the other person’s face instead of considering race as just part of the constant tinkering that nature does with life as we spin endlessly through the cosmos.

Racial differences are not defects. They are not warts.  They are just differences, yet we wrongly genuflect before this sacred cow we call race as though it is the holy of holies that we must not look at.

Nature is a frugal, minimalist, backyard engineer and tireless and never stopping tinkerer and it tries to design and constantly refine organisms for particular niches that have just enough genetic tools, but no more than necessary, to survive and prosper in such niches. Nature does not put gills on birds or eyes on organisms that live in total darkness.

When we can look at human beings as we look at the rest of nature, then we’ll be able to have a serious discussion about race. At that time, we should be mature enough to calmly accept the reality of differences as the adaptations that they truly are.

Meanwhile, over at the dog park in Costa Mesa, there are people happily talking about different breeds of dogs and how this breed is smarter or stronger or faster than this other breed; and they're mostly oblivious to the deeper significance and meaning of their happy talk.

PETER NAGHAVI LEAVES COSTA MESA THIS FRIDAY

If you've not been tuned into Costa Mesa's municipal government over the past decade or so, you probably have no idea of what a loss this is to the citizens of Costa Mesa.

Peter was the go-to, and get it done right guy who never sought the public spotlight, but who was always making sure things were on the right track.

Some of us were pleased when Peter was named Interim Assistant CEO, and more than a few observers  believe that had he become the permanent Asst. CEO; as many had expected would happen, instead of being replaced by one of John Moorlach's employees--in what looked like a completely political move--that the first charter would have succeeded, because, they believe, the screw-up at the City Clerk's office wouldn't have happened with Peter around.  But, this is just conjecture.

Many observers also believe that had Peter been allowed to become the permanent Assistant CEO, he wouldn't now be leaving City government.

As a professional, Peter stayed out of politics and whatever his views of the charter--and we have no idea what his views were of that--he would still have done what a professional does; get the job done right, no matter his personal feelings.

There is a mind set that true professionals have that lifts them above personal feelings and politics and it can be summed up in the expression: "the mission is everything."  We think Peter probably has that mind set.

ABOUT THE CM PRESS

Comments
We welcome thoughtful and succinct comments, but childish insults aimed at anyone have a lesser chance of being published. You can disagree with us, but try to do it with reasoned but brief comments. You'll also have a better chance of getting your comments posted if you use a name other than "Anonymous."

We let a hate comment through to show you the character of the commenter
Yesterday, we published a comment from a local named Geoff West who tacked on a childish hate comment to the end of his main comment about where an elected school board member's children go to school. The hate comment had no relation to his main comment--it was completely out of left field like the product of a  subconscious Tourette like tic. We left in his hate comment simply to let readers see the quality of this guy's thinking. He writes us all the time, but most of his comments are at that level, or are simply pedestrian nothings that add little to the conversation, so we don't post them.

School board members
A reader asked "Who cares where an elected school board member's kids go to school?"  We thought we made it clear.  Each school board member is elected to represent a certain part of the school district.  That school board member is or should be an advocate for the schools in that area.  If a school board member has children and puts them in schools outside his or her area, he or she is more likely to care more about the schools that his or her kids attend than the schools in the area he or she represents. This is a matter of public concern.

Our advocacy
We advocate for the improvement of Costa Mesa in all ways possible. We also advocate for White interests and our survival as the distinct people that we are--also in all ways possible.  Neither of these is going to change.  These are things that we will always write about in the CM PRESS. If you don't like either of these things, the good news is that you aren't forced to read them.

THE SENIOR CENTER BROUHAHA

[UPDATE 5/12/13: A COMMENTER TELLS THE CM PRESS "Actually, the City gives the Senior Center approximately $650,000 cash and in-kind of which $240,000 is in cash."]

As you may have heard, there's a brouhaha involving the Senior Center on W. 19th Street.

As we understand it, the staff of the Center says that those who want to serve on the Board of Directors must each donate $500 to the Center or they can't serve.

This rightly rankles some of the Board members.

So, at the last City Council meeting, Mayor Righeimer indicated that Board members should not have to pay because they wantt to donate their time to the Center, and that if the Center wants $ 500 from Board members then it should take it out of the money that the City gives the Center each year--something like  $65,000.

We completely agree with the Mayor.

COSTA MESA NEEDS TO DO BETTER--WE NEED CONSTANT IMPROVEMENT OR WE'RE GOING TO SLIP EVEN FURTHER BEHIND

In the rankings of 2,000 High Schools by Newsweek and The Daily Beast, as reported in the Daily Pilot this week HERE (and also mentioned briefly this week in the CM PRESS), the ratings of the five high schools* in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District were given as follows:

Corona del Mar High School was rated 200
Newport Harbor high School was rated 502
Costa Mesa High School was rated 1,150
Estancia High School was rated 1,703

So, we see a  big difference in the scores of high schools in the two cities. The biggest difference is  1,503 points in favor of CDMHS over Estancia, yet the schools are in the same school district.

What does it mean?

Are the teachers better in the two Newport high schools?  Do the two Newport high schools receive more money?  Are the school buildings better in the two Newport high schools?

The answer to each of the above questions is no. Remember, the schools are all in ONE, 'UNIFIED" school district.  The Teachers, the money, the buildings are all on a par.

The answer to the differences in scores is found in the fact that school ratings are largely a function of the communities in which they are located.

It is not the two Costa Mesa high schools that need to improve.  It is the City of Costa Mesa that needs to improve.

*Early College High School was rated 1,075, but since this is a special high school with a small student body, and is  less city specific than the other four high schools, we aren't including it in the above list. We also think the rating may not be accurate for this one.

Here's the relevant part of the above linked OC REGISTER article:

"The league was founded by Newport-Mesa School District board member Katrina Foley in March 2010 at Costa Mesa Middle School, the school Sam [Swanson] [Foley's son] attended at the time."

"[Sam] Swanson, now a student and skate team member at Corona del Mar High, said the growth of the Orange County Skateboarding League is remarkable."
Don't get us wrong.  We think that if Ms. Foley has put one or both of her kids in schools in Newport Beach that this is a responsible thing for an upwardly mobile parent to do.  Our gripe is that we don't think a parent who has her kids in a school outside of the area she is supposedly representing (when there is a similar school within her area of representation, such as CMHS) has her heart and mind focused on the area that she has been elected to represent.

PARENTS AND STUDENTS WITHOUT PROPER REPRESENTATION

Here in Costa Mesa, Katrina Foley supposedly represents a large part of  Costa Mesa on the school board.

However, Ms. Foley has, according to the unconfirmed buzz, pulled her two sons out of Costa Mesa schools (which are in walking distance of her home) and put them in Newport Beach schools.

So, if Ms. Foley truly has her kids in Newport Beach schools,  does she really represent Costa Mesa parents and students?  We don't think so.  We think her interests lie with her kids in Newport Beach schools, if that is where they are--which is natural for a parent.

HERE'S an article about an even more egregious situation that is happening in East Ramapo, New York where there is a "civil war" raging between Blacks and Latinos on one side, and Orthodox Jews on the other, and it shows what can happen when a school board does not represent the people it is supposed to represent.

The full article is long, so here's a short summary of the salient points:

--East Ramapo School District has 18,000 students, but 10,500 of those go to private Jewish schools. The rest are mostly Black and Latino and go to public schools.

--The seven member school board consists of six Orthodox Jews and only one Black. There are no Latinos on the school board. The six Orthodox Jews on the school board all send their children to private Jewish schools, not the public schools that they supposedly represent.

--The Blacks and Latinos accuse the Jews of diverting resources, like public buses, to the private schools.

The CM PRESS's point is not that there should be seats on school boards based on race or ethnicity, but that the members of school boards should not pretend to represent parents and students in certain areas, if they themselves have children but put their children either in private schools or in schools not in the area that they supposedly represent.

HOW SIMILAR ARE HUMANS TO OTHER ORGANISMS IN THEIR GENETIC CODES?

Cat: 90%
Cow: 80%
Mouse: 75%
Fruit Fly: 60%
Banana: 50%

How is the above possible?  Simple, all DNA is the same.  It is the order that is different.

Also, if you go back far enough, you'll find that all life that we know about on Earth started with the first molecule of DNA that made the leap from so-called non-living minerals to living minerals.  Then, it diverged and diverged and diverged, and it continues doing so today.

Just a few very tiny differences in the order of the letters in the DNA code can make all the difference in the world between different organisms.

CITY LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS FOR CHARTER COMMITTEE

The CM PRESS is in favor of a properly written charter. However, we think the Council is making a tactical mistake in forming the committee with such a tight leash by the Council.  This method just gives too much ammunition to the opponents of a charter.

Here's the relevant portion of a column that we sent over to the Daily Pilot more than a week ago (which the paper never published), with our ideas for how to form a charter committee:

How should charter committee members be selected?  If the council makes all of the selections, many voters will claim that the committee is stacked.

Fortunately, we have an example in our daily lives of what, with some modifications, might be a fair way to select committee members: the jury selection process.

With the juror selection process idea in mind as a general guide, we think the Council should consider doing something like this: Have a committee of 15 members with 20 alternates.

Let the council members each select one person to be on the committee.  This person can and should be an advocate and stand-in for the councilperson.  That's five members. Then, put the names of all others, who meet certain basic qualifications,  in a hat and let the city clerk pull out 30 names.  The first ten will join the already selected five to be the primary members of the committee.  The second 20 will be alternates, and the order of the picking of their names will determine which alternates are to step in to take the place of  primary members if necessary.

The reason to have so many alternates is because under this quasi-jury system--which lacks ordinary  jury controls--some primary committee members may simply not show up, or may miss too many meetings, or show bad faith, or demonstrate a lack of ability to work with others, or may lack the intellectual capacity to do the work at hand, and may have to be excused.  In addition, if any primary committee member misses three meetings, they should be replaced by an alternate.

This system should have a facilitator to keep things on track.

WHO'S MINDING THE STORE IN LOOSEY GOOSEYVILLE?

At last night's City Council meeting, the Council voted 5-0 to buy 435 new desktop computers, at a cost of $358,110, to replace all desktop computers used by City employees.

The vote to make this purchase was based on a staff report that seemed vague and maybe a little misguided.

For example, on the first page of the staff report we read:

"The City currently has about (about?) 435 desktop computers throughout every City owned facility.  Many (How many?) of these computers were last upgraded around (around?) 2003 and are beyond their life expectancy." (Emphases by CM PRESS and our questions in red)

Then, the report shows the computers being bought are Hewlett Packard Elite 8300 models.  The problem with this is that there are many 8300 models.  Some are all-in-one models and some have towers.  Some have this and some have that.  Now, it may be that someone on staff studied all the data sheets on the various models, but we bet the City Council didn't do that and probably doesn't know what it is they're buying or why they're supposedly needed.

Furthermore, common sense and best business practices dictate that you do not  replace every computer at the same time in an organization. Instead, you usually replace no more than 1/3 at a time.  So, you'd replace 1/3 this year and maybe 1/3 next year or the year after that and the last 1/3 after that.  This way, you're always getting the newest technology.

And, do ALL employees need the newest and most powerful computers?  What about employees that mostly just do word processing?  What about employees in the maintenance yards?

The staff report also doesn't say what is going to happen to the 435 old computers.

BTW:  The CM PRESS has now made a formal public records request to see the inventory list of existing desktop computers and records of when they were purchased.  We'll let you know what we learn.

IF THE ABOVE HAS YOU FEELING A LITTLE QUEASY, CHECK OUT THE VIDEO *OF THE MEETING, DURING WHICH ELEANOR EGAN ASKS SOME SERIOUS QUESTIONS ABOUT HOW THE CITY IS GOING TO INVEST OUR $40 MILLION DOLLARS

*[As of publication time, the Council meeting is not yet up on video, but it should be up later today HERE.]

When you watch the section with Ms. Egan, see if you can keep thoughts of  Bob Citron, the City of Bell, and the embezzled millions from the NMUSD from just popping up in your mind.  No, we're not saying that anything is wrong with what staff is asking the Council to do, but we do think Ms. Egan is asking the right questions and is sounding a proper cautionary note.

And, remember, the present Council is now pointing fingers at past Councils for the employee compensation mess that we now find ourselves in.  But, is the present Council, itself, now engaged in the same loosey goosey do whatever staff says way of doing things? Let's not get into a position where future Councils will be pointing at the present Council because of poor investment strategies and use of our money.

Folks, the City Council has to do more than just rubber stamp everything that staff puts in front of them, and they have to stop simply relying on staff and volunteer committees to do their thinking for them. And, with regards to this investment of our money, the recommendations apparently came both from a volunteer committee of citizens and staff.  But, the Council is ultimately responsible.

One of the major points that Ms. Egan brought up was that it seems imprudent to put all of our $40 million with one investment firm.  She also questioned various specific provisions of the actual contract with the investment firm, which, according to Ms. Egan, seem to be at variance with the summary in the staff report.  Folks, it is important that the staff reports correctly reflect what is in contracts, because the City Council members may simply rely on the staff reports and not read the contracts.

You can see the problem.  If something goes wrong, and we lose our money, the Council will point at the committee and the committee will point at staff  and staff will point at the Council and everyone will say that they're not responsible.

The way things generally happen in the real world with investments is that it often takes a few years for things to be discovered if they're going wrong.  And, at that future time, the present Council may not  even be on the dais and the volunteer committee may no longer exist. So, after the people who have helped invest our money have gone happily down the road, and someone then discovers that the investments made weren't good ones, who is left holding the bag?  The citizens of Costa Mesa.  Oooops.  Time for more taxes, because someone wasn't minding the store and was spending our money like drunken sailors.

Folks there is a general principle that goes like this:  You can always delegate certain of your authority, but you can never delegate your responsibility.

So, who is responsible--who has the ultimate fiduciary responsibility--to the citizens of Costa Mesa?  It is the City Council.

We realize that the Councilmembers are part timers and that they all have jobs that take up much of their time, but we still believe that they have to ask the hard questions of staff so that mistakes aren't made.

And, one thing seems to be certain about investments:  Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

CM PRESS # 217

REMEMBER A RECENT PIECE IN THE CM PRESS WHERE WE TOLD YOU THAT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IS SETTLING SOMALIS IN NEW ENGLAND AND ESPECIALLY IN THE WHITEST NEW ENGLAND STATES SUCH AS NEW HAMPSHIRE AND MAINE (AND, MAYBE, VERMONT)?

We pointed out that these states have very low violent crime rates, but that the Somalis are bringing Black violent crime to them.

HERE'S  just another example of this.  A Black Somali man raped a White woman in her home.

Violent crime is not an equal opportunity employer and Whites are constantly becoming victims of Black crime.  Meanwhile, the MSM try to cover it up and keep the stories localized.

Don't become a victim.  Do profile. Do use your brain.  Do follow your instincts.

As we've written before, we could fill the CM PRESS to overflowing each and every day with stories of Black's attacking Whites, but we'd have a hard time filling even a couple of paragraphs with stories of Whites attacking Blacks.

You don't have to put up with this violent crime against you and yours, and you don't have to be passive wimps when the press tries to hide the truth from you.  Speak out.

CM PRESS # 216

DAILY PILOT STORY ON THE STABBINGS ON ANAHEIM--WESTSIDE

The CM PRESS became politically active in Costa Mesa several years ago because of a gang attack on a couple of White kids walking home from Costa Mesa High School.  The non-White gang attacked the White kids with sticks and rocks and a firearm of some type (it misfired).  They yelled anti-White hate terms at the kids.

When the police were called, they tried to censor the report given to them about the anti-White hate terms.

After that incident, the CM PRESS started attending City Council meetings and speaking out against gangs and the deterioration of Costa Mesa.

What was the reaction from the Council back then?  The Council actually denied there were gangs in the City.  We kid you not.  In fact, certain of the Council members tried to dismiss our claims by saying that the alleged gang members were really just kids trying to look like gang members.

After that, the CM PRESS started making fun of the Council by calling gang members fashion models. Then, every time there was another gang attack, we would write something about how fashion models attacked some people at such and such a place.

Fast forward. Now, we know that there are 7 Latino gangs in Costa Mesa and we now have a police gang detail (which we didn't have when the CM PRESS first got active).  However, the present Council still doesn't get it. [Quick aside: A few years ago, the CMPD under different leadership back then actually tried to hide the fact that ALL the gangs in Costa Mesa (seven gangs) are Latino.]

The gangs are going to grow, the violent crime is going to increase, and White citizens are going to flee Costa Mesa unless the Council starts draining the swamp to cause the gang members to up and move to cities where they are more comfortable.

For those who are new readers, "draining the swamp," simply means thinning out the slums in the City by buying them up, tearing them down, and putting in parking lots or pocket parks.

Now, when the CM PRESS constantly brings up this draining the swamp notion, certain of the Council members condescendingly tell us that the City doesn't have the money to do this.

In fact, the City does have the money, but the Council keeps wasting it on things that are not essential.

For example, at tomorrow night's City Council meeting, staff will ask the Council to buy 435 new desk top computers at a cost of  $358,110, to replace computers that are working just fine.  At a recent meeting the Council bought  five new police cars at a cost of $293,323.70 and six new Honda police motorcycles at a cost of $163,897.32 to replace perfectly fine police cars and motorcycles.  And, also at a recent meeting, the Council authorized spending $ 80,000 to have an architect come up with ideas on changing the look of City Hall's lobby.  No, that $80,000 isn't to actually change things, but just to come up with ideas for changing things. The Council has also authorized the hiring of 20 new police officers.

This kind of spending goes on all the time.

What the Council should be doing is saving the money it is spending on unnecessary things and using that to buy up the slums.

Unless the Council smartens up, Costa Mesa is going to become a new Santa Ana with almost nightly stabbings and shootings and with schools that are at slum city levels.

And, speaking of the schools, many upwardly mobile White parents have pulled their kids out of Costa Mesa schools and put them in schools where the demographics are more suitable.  In fact, one School Board member who lives in Costa Mesa and who represents a large part of Costa Mesa on the board, has pulled her kids out of Costa Mesa schools (which are within easy walking distance of her Costa Mesa home), and put them in Newport Beach schools.

We're not going to be able to hire enough cops to handle the crime and social problems in Costa Mesa, unless we get proactive and remove the habitats for criminals--the slums.

Folks, there are some universal laws of nature and we say that one of these universal laws is that all living organisms (including humans) will gravitate to areas where they feel comfortable.

We have violent gangs in Costa Mesa because we have slums where they feel comfortable. Remove the slums, and like alligators who have had their swamp drained, they will leave the area.

C'mon Costa Mesa City Council, drain the swamps in Costa Mesa.

GANG RELATED STABBING OF THREE  IN COSTA MESA--ON WESTSIDE

On Saturday, the CMPD arrested two Latinos on the Westside  after they stabbed three people on Anaheim Way near Yorkshire Street.  That location is just down from Hamilton and is near a couple of Latino charities in Rea School and is an area with a very high crime rate due to the slums and perhaps, as some believe, because of some of the charities that act as  magnets for a criminal element.

The three stabbing victims were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening stab wounds.

Hey, City Council, the gangs are going to get bigger and the violent crime will get worse unless you start thinning out the slums.

THE ROSES OF ROSE GARDEN LAND

Once, there was a land of sentient roses called Rose Garden  Land.  It was a prosperous and happy land, with high employment, low crime and a high quality of life for the Roses who lived in Rose Garden Land.

However, as the years passed, some weak seed Roses began saying that Rose Garden Land needed diversity.  Why it needed diversity was never explained and not many Roses even asked the question.

So, the weak seeds  kept up their call to make Rose Garden Land look like  the "wonderful tapestry of flower kind."

"Why, we mustn't be spaciest, they said.  We want a wonderful multicultural nation. Remember, all chlorophyll is green. We are all just alike.  The differences between us are so minor that we mustn't even consider such things.  There is only one species of flower--the flower species.  So, keep that in mind; because we want hope not hate."

Then, Dandelions, Cornflowers, Carnations, Tulips, Petunias and many other flowers all moved to Rose Garden Land.  Soon, the crime rate increased, and there was more unemployment and the quality of life dropped.

Trying to satisfy the needs of all the different kinds of flowers led to Rose Garden Land becoming a lesser place than what it had been before.  Some flowers needed more sun.  Some less.  Some needed more water. Some almost none.  So, compromises had to be made.  And, none of the residents of Rose Garden Land were ever completely satisfied.

Eventually, the Roses were forced to flee Rose Garden Land for a safer garden and a better quality of life like they had when they were just among their own kind.  Meanwhile, Rose Garden Land began to die.  Without the Roses, it just wasn't the same.

And, in dying  Rose Garden Land, all the different flowers now called themselves Roses.  After all, they lived in a place called Rose Garden Land, so they must, indeed, be Roses.  Of course, in reality, they were nothing of the sort.  A Rose is a Rose and other flowers are not Roses, even if they live in a place called Rose Garden Land.

LEECE AND THE LEFTY BAND OF DIMWITS WANT TO RAISE TAXES AND FEES

Why?  Because our municipal government can't seem to live within its means and the City Council keeps spending like drunken sailors on everything staff puts in front of them.

Folks, if you don't know anything about real world government finance, then you should just shut up or try to learn something.

"Needs" of government always expand to use all the money they can get and then some (and most of the needs aren't really needs at all).  Government budgets are based on always asking for more than you need, so in tough times, it becomes harder for politicians to cut back on the budgets.

At next Tuesday's City Council meeting you'll see a big expense as staff wants to replace all desktop computers of city employees. Is that a real need?  Do all employees need the newest computers?

It was the same thing recently with buying a whole bunch of new police cars.

At just about every City Council meeting, there are usually hundreds of thousands of dollars of items that the Council just rubber stamps for approval.

Where the hell is the fiscal responsibility?

STUPID ENGLISH TEA AND TALK OF BOMBING IRAN CAUSES A FLASHBACK

By H. Millard (c) 2013

I knew I should have kept drinking coffee instead of that watery, sissy English tea. I woke up in a sweat after having a nightmare about gopher faced twit Tony Blair standing at my door looking like the Mad Hatter in the cartoon version of Alice in Wonderland. The TV was still on, and some old 1940's movie was running. I ignored it.

I think the Brits put some kind of drugs in the tea. Maybe it does something to the English part of my genes. Triggers something. Maybe that's the real reason why the early Colonists dressed up like Indians and threw the crap in Boston Harbor. Or, maybe it was a combo of the tea in my system and the ever present TV screwing with my subconscious. Then again, maybe the Irish and French part of my genes gave me some type of immunity from the English drugs so I don't just accept what world leaders say on face value when what they say doesn't make much sense.

Anyway, in my dream, there was former British Prime Minister Blair standing at my door with his gopher teeth flashing. "I say, old boy, we must now attack Iran."

"Why?" I ask.

"Dear fellow, it's bloody clear that it is an evil nation. How so? Because I say so, of course."

"Do you have any evidence?" I ask.

"Why certainly. I have the word of the Prime Minister of England. And that certainly cinches it, don't you agree?"

"No, that doesn't cinch a damn thing. You're the flash-back friggin' Prime Minister and you're making a circular argument."

"But, if I'm the Prime Minister, it is cinched. You really must try to keep this straight."

Before I could answer, a cowpoke came moseying into the scene. He was wearing a tall white hat, a cowboy shirt with fancy designs, and furry looking white chaps. The outfit was completed with some fancy cowboy boots. "Git this straight, pardner. This falsh back Prime Minister feller is right. Them there Iranians are mean varmints and we gotta hit 'em like we hit them Iraqis. It's them weapons of mass destruction, boy. Maybe them wily Iraqis slipped them over the border to the Iranians and that's why we couldn't find 'em in Iraq. Remember how we dealt with them blood thirsty Injuns in this country boy? Them arrows was weapons of mass destruction and we had to wipe the Red Faces out for peace on the planet. That's the way we gotta now treat the rest of the world. It's the American thing to do. It's patriotic."

That was it. I got out of bed and rushed out to get a cup of coffee to wash that tea out of my system. The present day is crazy enough and now I'm flashing back to Tony Blair? Man, I needed the java to dilute the tea.

The only place that was open was one of those yuppie coffee joints that are all over the place that try to look like they're not a big chain. I rushed in, past a bunch of rapidly aging women with hungry eyes and neo lounge lizard looking guys doing someting or other on their laptops, for my fix. "Gimme me a cup of coffee," I demanded of the mixed up, black, white, something or other dame, er, creature with the hairy arms and tits wearing combat boots and a dress who was standing behind the counter. It looked as though it was going to say something like "My name is Sandy, and I'll be your wait person today." But the creature didn't say that. Instead, it said, with a thick, but flirtatious, Spanish accent and masculine voice, "And, what kind of coffee would you like, Senor?"

I looked at the gene and gender and nationality and fashion confused individual who may have been a guy or girl or something in between. "What kind? Waddya mean what kind? A friggin' cup of coffee. Are you retarded or something?" I soon got a cup of some screwy stuff with whipped cream floating on top.

"Hey, I didn't ask you for no friggin' root beer float. I wanted a cup of Joe.

"Cup of Joe? How quaint and retro, Senor. You're clearly not old enough to be using terminology from the old America of the '40's. That is coffee. This is a new day, Senor."

I drank some of the stuff and it wasn't bad once I got past the whipped cream. Soon, I was back to normal and thinking clearly once again, but the creature was still there smiling at me. This was reality. This was post-American America.

I wondered if flash-back Blair was taking bags of something under the table from the White House for his slavish support of everything that flash-back Bush did. It doesn't seem to be personal between Bush and Blair, because back when Clinton was in the White House, Blair was the same way; acting like a panting dog and doing everything but rubbing up against Clinton's leg. Now that flash-back.Bush is Mr. Big, flash-back Blair is still acting the dog part.

Geez. What's with that guy and how did he get to be Prime Minister of England? Oh, yeah, England today is becoming a Third World nation, just like the U.S. Blair is the leader that the English probably deserve as it slips into a black hole like most of its former colonies including the U.S. Also, it appears as though the sub-atomic particles were at work again. First, we get a white guy named Tony Blair in England telling fibs about weapons of mass destruction and then we get a black guy named Jason Blair in the U.S. at the New York Times telling fibs in his columns. Two Blairs. One white, one black. Both in hot water at about the same time concerning Iraq. You have to hand it to those sub-atomic particles and that synchronicity stuff.

I left the coffee joint and got in my car, but the tea was still in my system because on my radio was flash-back Radio Pudgy Limbaugh telling me that Bill Clinton was the reason we had to attack Iraq and that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction and that if I don't believe it, I'm not a good American and I'm a lefty and a Democrat. Huh? Radio Pudgy is a simple man with a simple faith. He knew there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq because of his faith. He has faith that George W. Bush is a god among men, and he has faith that Bill Clinton is a devil among men. Facts and truth are subversive to those like Radio Pudgy. It's faith that is important. You just have to believe. Blind faith in your leaders is the American thing to do.

Just then another vision came unbidden to my tea addled brain. I saw hundreds of people lining up to drink poisoned kook-aid, or was it sissy English tea? Then they all died. I interpreted that as a metaphor and not as a  literal scene. See, I figure those with blind faith drink the mental version of poisoned drinks every day; those who don't have that faith spit the crap out and ask questions.

I have little blind faith, so I question: Exactly where were those Iraqi weapons of mass destruction, Mr. Bush and Mr. Blair and where are the weapons of mass destruction in Iran, today, Mr. Obama and Mr. Cameron?

GENES, FREE WILL, SHARKS
by H. Millard (c) 2013

Some time ago, I saw a muddled newspaper column written by a well known libertarian writer. In his column, the writer told readers that he has very little interest in his own European ethnicity. (How white of him)  He then went on to tell everyone else that they shouldn't care much about their ethnicity either because, golly, this would rob them of their self-determination.
It was clear from the start that the writer knows little about nature and the natural ways of existence and was heading off in the wrong direction.  This was soon evidenced as he began mixing up  the concepts of ethnicity, race, national origin, genes and religion such that any intelligent discussion of these things would elude him.  And, elude him they did as he went happily on his way preaching his know-nothing, but good-natured and PC, Telly-Tubby, view of reality.
As usual with those who know little about such things, the writer begrudgingly acknowledged what every sixth grade student knows:  Genes determine how tall we are, our skin pigmentation, eye color, even elements of personality, tastes and preferences.  Unfortunately, as mentioned above,  the writer than veered off into lala land by cautioning readers that to go much further in acknowledging what genes do, would be hazardous because  we might lose our belief in our free will.  That this argument is a modern version of cautioning people to not question the scientifically wrong but Dark Ages orthodoxy that the earth is the center of the solar system--because this may lead them to lose their faith in the Bible--seems to have not occured to this writer.

The column writer then tried to address the issue of free will in more detail, but he made the common PC mistake of our age and never once used the word  "race." It's my guess that he was trying to avoid being called a racist.  However, in trying to avoid using the "R" word, he got various concepts jumbled up so badly that any intelligent discussion about genes became confused and almost meaningless. For example, he wrote:  "Do Italians have to see the world as Italians and Germans as Germans, Catholics as Catholics, Jews as Jews, Japanese as Japanese, and so on."  You, dear reader, probably see how bollixed up that is; he's mixing up nationalities, ethnicities and religion in order to deny the reality of genes as regards to "races."
Actually, and contrary to his advice, we do have to go deeper and further if we are to understand the human conditions (plural intentional) and how we relate to everything else in existence and if we are to ever design just societies where individuals can pursue happiness and live their lives in peace and harmony and seek to fulfill their destiny, as they, themselves, determine.
In truth, our much vaunted free-will is overrated, at least when you look at statistical analyses of how humans behave.  And, we have to look at statistics to see the patterns.

Despite what some want to believe, it's a fact that different groups of people who share the same genes often act and react in similar ways to various internal and external environmental influences and stimuli. Some groups are more prone to violence than other groups.  Some groups are more prone to various other things than other groups.  This does not mean that every individual of every group will always act in accord with the statistically revealed genetic group program, because there are variables involved.  Still, genes-r-us.
And, what of these variables--these things where we seem to have free will? Are they really a matter of our free will or are they, too, built into our genetic programs? The answer, dear friends, is that they are in the genes also. They're there because genes "want" to survive, and they need to be able to adapt to changing conditions in order to do so. In other words, they've been engineered with alternative pathways, such that we might envision our genes as having a Plan A, a Plan B, a Plan C, etc. In addition, the eternal struggle of all that is in existence plays out within our own bodies. This means that we do have choices, but we need to understand that our choices are, in the first instance, gene related.
We have different genetic influences struggling with each other inside of us as we go through our lives.  Remember, each of us carries 23 chromosomes full of genes from each of our parents.  One parent may contribute a gene for, say, alcoholism.  The other parent may contribute one for just the opposite trait.  Which one is expressed in the day to day life of the individual?  It depends on circumstances. If the person with an alcoholic gene never takes a drink of alcohol, perhaps due to a religious prohibition, the alcoholism gene loses and the other one wins. If that person takes a drink of alcohol, then the alcoholism gene may win.  And, so it goes with a series of almost binary choices in our lives.
So where is our free will?  Must we robotically follow the dictates of this or that gene?   In a sense, yes. However, we also have genes that have given us our brains and the ability to think about these things and to override some of the impulses of our other genes.  To do this, we must hold ideas in our minds of what is right and what is wrong. To hold these right ideas we must have the right understanding and conditioning.  If these ideas are strong enough, because the genes that allow us to have them are stronger than other gene influences, we can override the other genes. This, of course, is where religion and philosophy enter the picture, because these are the traditional sources of the right understanding and conditioning, that enables us to override certain of our other genes.  Unfortunately, wrong religious or philosophical view are also often the source of wrong understanding and conditioning that can be harmful.

In Vermont, a black man murdered 2 white people.  According to the U.S. Census, Vermont has 608, 827 residents and is 96.9% white (about 589,952 white people). It is only 0.6% black (about 365 black people).  It has one of the lowest violent crime rates in the nation. In 2000, there were 9 murders in Vermont which equates to a 1.5% murder rate.
Contrast Vermont's statistics to those of Washington, D. C. to see if you can find any clues about why we are the way we are. According to the U.S. Census, Washington, D.C.  has 550,521 residents and is 37.4% white and 57.7% black. In 2000, there were 239 murders which equates to a 41.8% murder rate.
See any patterns?  Free will?  Genes? Something else?  Too PC to even ask the questions or point out the statistics? Welcome to the new Dark Ages where intellectual inquiry into the nature of reality--when it involves humans--is something that the Big Brother blenders have proscribed.  So, go about your lives and not notice patterns--and be forever befuddled about why things happen the way they do.   Don't forget the advice of the libertarian writer with whom we started this essay, and don't have any interest in ethnicity or race.  Hey, such things aren't important.  We have free will. We don't need no stinkin' statistics.
And...
Remember, that compared to your risk of being attacked and killed  in Washington, D.C., your relative risk of being attacked and killed by a shark is very small.  Also remember that not all sharks will attack you.  However, if you are in the presence of sharks here's some advice about what to do:
If a shark begins to get too interested in you by coming closer and closer, the best strategy is to leave the area - swim quickly away, watching the shark all the time. Sharks are less likely to attack a "school" of divers than a solitary individual. If a shark is acting overtly aggressive - look to back up against whatever structure (reef, rock outcropping, piling) is available, thereby reducing the angles with which the shark can approach you.

The shark advice works when attacked by other humans also.

MANSOOR TO RUN FOR SUPERVISOR?

There's a buzz that Allan Mansoor might run for supervisor.  If he does so and wins, he'd be good for Newport-Mesa as he has deep roots here.

Yup.  All living organisms are born to make more like themselves.  Those that don't, go extinct.  This is true of individuals, nations, races and species.

Because of weak seed politicians, Great Britain is being invaded by millions and millions of non-Whites who are completely changing the country.

Now, more and more White Brits are waking up to the reality that what is happening is genocide---bedroom genocide.
