3. Several years ago I was visiting a small town on the East Coast (population 18,000) from California for the day. While I was there, there was an earthquake in California. The only injury (and it was a a fatal injury) was to a kid visiting California from that same small town.

4. Also, several years ago I casually walked into a bookstore in California to kill a few minutes, and just glanced at a wall of books just inside the door. The cover of one book immediately caught my eye because it looked like something I had seen as a kid--odd dark clouds with a light pinpointing through them down to the ground. Then, I noticed the author of the book had the same uncommon last name as a guy I shared an office with. So, I picked up the book and opened it. The first page that I opened to had a picture of a house, not far from my own home, in the small town in New England where I grew up and where I had seen the clouds/light.

There are probably millions of similar stories. Coincidences? Quantum mechanical universe somehow balancing or linking things in unusual (to us) ways? Our minds simply making connections out of events with no real connections at all?

Hmmm. I wonder. What does my cat make of my garage door suddenly opening when no one is around but then my car comes down the street a few minutes later? Coincidence?

We live in a cause and effect universe. Like my cat, we may not always know the causes when we see the effects, but there are causes.

The CM PRESS finds it odd that the Daily Pilot--which hasn't run a single word about this story--doesn't seem to understand the significance of the above win to Costa Mesa.

Here's a clue. At the next City Council meeting on June 15, (LINK to agenda) there's a closed session item (Item 4) concerning the day laborer law suit against the City of Costa Mesa which is similar to the one day laborers just lost on appeal against the City of Redondo Beach.

--Do you think the above victory for Redondo Beach might be discussed at that closed session?

--Do you think the City of Costa Mesa might ask the court to throw the case out?

--Do you think that the City of Costa Mesa might conform its solicitation ordinance to exactly mirror Redondo Beach's ordinance down to the last comma and period?

--Do you think the City of Costa Mesa might now start legally stopping day laborers from soliciting work from potential employers in cars?

--Do you think the City of Costa Mesa might now start arresting employers in cars who solicit day laborers?

--Redondo's law is all automobile related and it allows the police to arrest both the day workers soliciting work from potential employers in automobiles and potential employers in automobiles.

--Redondo's law gets around the reasonable time, place, and manner problem and does not require the City to open a job center because it does not keep day workers or potential employers on foot from discussing employment. So, day workers on sidewalks and employers on sidewalks may discuss employment.

--Redondo's law covers solicitation of and by day workers and potential employers in the street or on traffic islands, alleys, drive ways, or on sidewalks when either the employer or the day worker is in a car.

SOME LITTLE RUSH LIMBAUGHS ON THE HORIZON TO BUG A NEW GENERATION OF LEFTIES?

Rush Limbaugh, 59, married Kathryn Rogers, 33 this past Saturday.

Let's see, deduct the 3 from the 9 and...the 3 from the 5...that's a 26-year age difference.

However, the age difference is less important (in the big scheme of things, and if you ask me) than the fact that the new Mrs. Limbaugh is of child bearing age.

A couple of years ago I penned an article "Rush Limbaugh Died Today."

The main point of the article was that nature's basic command to all living organisms is that they must make more like themselves so that their genotype will survive and expand. This command is implanted in the DNA. If there were no such command, life would have died out long ago.

The second point I was making was that many humans override this command of nature and do not follow it, and thus become Dead Enders. In evolutionary terms they are not the fittest.

"Fittest," as in "survival of the fittest" just means that one reproduces one's genotype and sends it into the future.

Thus, the parents of every person alive today were the fittest among humans of their generation; because they produced those of us alive today. They were nature's winners because they handed off their genes for the next leg of the race into the future.

And, every human alive today is (for the time being) also the fittest, just because we are alive.

However, if we who are alive today do not have children, our genotype cannot survive into the next generation. Then, nature redefines us as not being the fittest.

I used Limbaugh as my example because of his high profile and because he has achieved much in material success in his life. But my point was that Limbaugh would ultimately fail in life--and be a Dead Ender--if he went to the grave without leaving his genotype to carry on his line.

Maybe Rush read my article. Maybe not. It doesn't matter to me. Maybe he listened to the message from his DNA. Maybe not. Maybe he hasn't heard the message at all. Time will tell.

This will be Rush's fourth marriage. None of the prior three produced any children. Maybe that was intentional. Maybe not. If Rush did get the message (and no matter how he got it) then it's my guess that this marriage is primed to produce children.

Give it a few months and we should know whether Rush Limbaugh has heard the inner message from his ancestors stretching all the way back to that first molecule of DNA:"Make more like yourself, don't let us die out."

As usual, what West...er...Anonymous has to say seems to us to be on a third grade level, but judge for yourself.

Here, in relevant part (we removed the name calling), is what West...er...Anonymous had to say: "So... re: #1 - I guess that means cutting Police, Fire and EVERY other city service, right? [Snort, snicker, yuck, yuck] I mean, they might benefit illegal aliens in some way...." [Snort, snicker, yuck, yuck]

What do you think? Do West's...er...Annonymous's comments add anything to the request by the City Manager (See CM PRESS # 156) for comments on what to cut from the budget, or do they sound to you, as they do to us, like the silly childish prattling of someone with nothing to say?

Can it be that West...er...Anonymous actually doesn't understand the use of bullet points in making succinct suggestions, and can it be that he doesn't realize that such bullet points aren't supposed to be full dissertations on the subject and that a reader is expected to have normal intelligence when reading them?

Can it be that West...er...Anonymous really thinks that someone would suggest cutting all essential services?

Wants citizen input on what should be cut, etc.

Okay, for starters:

1. Cut everything that benefits illegal aliens in any way.
2. Get rid of the Parks and Rec. Commission--let the Planning Commission handle.
3. Close City Hall one day a week--furlough employees for that one day.
4. Ground the helicopter.
5. Call on neighborhood groups to take care of neighborhood parks in their own neighborhoods (mow the grass, etc.) and encourage various other forms of volunteerism in each neighborhood.
6. Cut back on street sweeping. Most "citizen" neighborhood streets are already kept pretty clean by the citizens living there and may not need the City's street sweeper so often.
7. Make the community gardens pay for themselves.
8. Make afterschool programs pay for themselves.

Confused about the Senior Center? Here's a quick look at the basics.

1. The Senior Center Corporation is a private entity.
2. The Senior Center Corporation leases the City owned building it occupies on 19th Street from the City of Costa Mesa (you and us) for a buck a year.
3. The City of Costa Mesa (you and us) gives the Senior Center Corporation about $240,000 of our money each year.
4. The City of Costa Mesa (you and us) also provides free janitorial and other services to maintain the City owned building occupied by the Senior Center Corporation.

Now, the City Council is doing its job and asking to take a look at the books of the Senior Center Corporation to make sure our money is being used properly. This is something that the Council should do all the time when it gives away our money.

So, why are some who are close to the Senior Center Corporation resisting attempts by the City Council to look at the books?

If the Senior Center Corporation doesn't want oversight, it can simply go rent another building someplace (probably not for a buck a year, though) and refuse to take any money from the City.

Then, the City will have no more oversight than it does over other corporations.

But, so long as the Senior Center Corporation is taking our money and getting an essentially free building and free janitorial and other services from the taxpayers of Costa Mesa, it should be transparent.

Will Israel risk more international condemnation by attacking it?

The politicians in Israel have to know that it's going to be one ship after another bringing humanitarian aid to Gaza and that if Israel stops or attacks them, Israel is going to be seen in an even worse light than now.

The smart thing to do is to let the ships pass.

If there are legitimate concerns about weapons being brought to Gaza aboard the ships, the place to check the ships is at their ports of departure.

Read the article and you'll see why Costa Mesa should ease the burdens on businesses in our city; not increase them as suggested by some lefty loons in order to keep a bloated local nanny government from going on a diet.

Competition is the way of nature and it infuses all of human activity.

Costa Mesa is competing with all other cities for productive citizens and their businesses.

By keeping our fees low, we compensate just a little for all the other crap that these productive citizens and their businesses have to put up with, and it gives Costa Mesa a slight competitive advantage.

Now, if we can just get the City Council to understand a little of this and start promoting our city properly, we may see some gains.

BTW, each year, the City gives some of our tax money to a PR agency to promote Costa Mesa, but we're not sure the PR agency is being given the right direction.

Maybe the Council should look into this to make sure we're getting the most for our money.
