THE TRUE COST TO COSTA MESANS OF THEIR PUBLIC "SERVANTS"

In this case, the servants are the ones served. The servants get the gold and the feather beds while those they serve have to work overtime to pay the servants.

You've no doubt been reading the columns in the dead tree press about the massive salaries and benefits that Costa Mesans pay our public servants.

What you're not seeing reported is that most of these public servants don't want to live in Costa Mesa and they take the money we pay them to the cities where they do live. Those are cities where they own homes, put their kids in schools, and do their shopping.

This is a big money drain on Costa Mesa. Our tax money is not recirculating here, it's going down the drain.

Several years ago the CM PRESS was able to obtain the percentage of our cops who don't live in Costa Mesa from City Hall's Human Relations Department. We didn't get their addresses or names, just the percentage that don't live here. That percentage was more than 75% (if memory serves it was up around 79%).

Recently, we tried to get the figures on the percentage of firefighters who don't live here and we also wanted an update on the percentage of cops who live elsewhere.

No dice. City Hall has now circled the wagons and won't give us that information.

This brings up the amount of secrecy that seems to be the order of the day at City Hall.

You see, we're just peons--we tax paying citizens--City Hall chooses what you can know about your government.

We ordinary citizens weren't allowed to know what was being negotiated with the employee unions and could give no input into the negotiations until everything was set in stone and rushed to a vote by the City Council. Now, we're stuck with contracts that screw us but reward our carpetbagging employees.

Our elected City Councilmembers just don't seem to be up to the task of protecting our interests and approve all sorts of stupid things. Don't get us going @#$#^&^*^&^%#=.

Hey, City Council, you can find out the percentages of employees who live here. Why don't you get those numbers and let us know?

DOES COSTA MESA HAVE A BRAIN DEFICIT ON THE CITY COUNCIL?

In the wake of the stupid vote that approved the sweetheart deal with the Costa Mesa firefighters last week--Foley, Leece and Monahan are the ones who drank the kool-aid on this nonsense, while Bever and Mansoor voted against it--we'd like to be able to write that it is always these three--Foley, Leece and Monahan who make the wrong votes, but that's not the way it is. Sometimes, Bever and Mansoor also vote the wrong way on matters that will eventually come back to bite the citizens of this city.

We wonder--we're serious--if it's just a case where not one of the five Councilmembers is capable of thinking things through to their logical conclusions so each of them simply stumbles into good and bad votes and never really understands what they've done or why they're praised on some votes and condemned on others.

We're pretty sure the five aren't just blindfolding themselves and throwing darts to make their decisions, but sometimes it seems that way.

Maybe, along with other requirements for running for office, there should be one where the candidates have to take an IQ test--no, that won't work. Smart people also often make bad decisions.

Perhaps it's just a matter of the Councilmembers slowing down and talking privately to citizens who may see some problems with what the Council is being asked to vote on and who can offer some suggestions.

As it is now, the Councilmembers often get very public comments at City Council meetings, but this is often too late for them to think things through and change direction if necessary.

So, what we're often left with is what we now see all the time: The Council will pass something really stupid and harmful to the citizens of this city and won't understand this until citizens start writing columns and letters about their stupidity--after the fact, when it's too late.

REPORT ON LAST NIGHT'S CHECKPOINT

The Costa Mesa Police Department conducted a sobriety checkpoint on Friday August 14, 2009, at Newport Boulevard and 22nd Street. Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the Business, Transportation, and Housing Agency and is part of a National enforcement campaign.

During the hours of operation, 647 vehicles drove through the checkpoint, 212 vehicles were stopped, and 25 drivers were screened for driving under the influence. There were 3 DUI arrests. In addition, 9 drivers were cited for no licenses and 1 driver was arrested for possession of marijuana for sales. A total of 10 citations were issued for miscellaneous vehicle code violations and 9 vehicles were impounded.

LHC COOLING DOWN


Only sectors 34 and 67 are still at room temperature. Sector 12 is down in the operational range near absolute zero. Sector 78 is being cooled down and should join Sector 12 soon. Sectors 23, 45, 56 and 81 are also being cooled down. Remember, the LHC is about 17 miles around so each of the eight sectors is a little more than 2 miles in length. Once the sectors get below a certain temperature, people can't enter them.
When fully cooled down, the LHC will be the coldest place in the universe.

We wonder. Are the folks at the LHC secretly trying to beat their stated November start-up schedule?

They've also been saying that when they crank the LHC up that they'll only bring it up to half-power--which is still twice as powerful as the present most powerful particle accelerator on the planet at the Fermi Lab outside of Chicago. Maybe, if all goes well, they'll put the pedal to the metal on the LHC?

IN STAFF WE TRUST

Mayor Pro Tem Leece wants the city to display the motto: In God We Trust at City Hall.

Given Ms. Leece's frequent recent arguments that the City Council should trust staff when the Council tries to decide thorny issues, perhaps the motto should be In Staff We Trust.

Actually, a little less blind trust and a little more critical thinking and intelligent reasoning is needed around City Hall.



And, speaking of that, according to the almost daily Daily Pilot, lefty Councilmember Katrina Foley--who from where we sit appears to be an acolyte of the two great liberal gods Diversity and Multi-Culturalism--wants any display of the words In God We Trust to include symbols of "other religions." How inclusive of her.



Perhaps the slogan should be: Do Your Own Thing If It's Happen' Now, Baby.



Three things about the In God We Trust slogan and religious symbols:

First, In God We Trust is not a religious symbol. A religious symbol would be images of things such as (but not limited to) a Cross (Christians) or Star of David (Judaism), Crescent Moon (Islam) or a Swastika (Buddhism) and on and on and on.

The second thing about this is that if actual religious symbols are used with the slogan, some religions are sure to be left out--how about Wicca, Voodoo, Satanism, just to name three?--and this will lead to legal challenges and legal losses for the city.

The third thing is that while it can be argued that In God We Trust is a secular slogan;this is a weak argument, and the slogan may be offensive to those who do not believe in a God or whose concept of God is so different from what is usually meant by the term in the three desert religions of Christianity, Judaism and Islam as to be insulting.


When all is said and done, and given the present state of the law, displaying the slogan In God We Trust without any religious symbols at all, may pass constitutional muster simply because the slogan has been around in the country from its founding and can be passed off as an historic and traditional expression.


Give it a few years, though (maybe not even that long), and there may be Muslims who may want the slogan changed to Allahu Akbar (God is the Greatest). And, Muslims may make the argument that this slogan is just as secular (or not) as In God We Trust.



The back story on all this is that when the U.S. decided to veer away from its traditional roots and become a multi-culti nation (and we use the term nation loosely) it opened the door to becoming a real life Star Wars Bar where everything has to be watered down lest someone or some group be offended. And, by the way, were you asked if you wanted the nation to veer away as it has?



Anyway, in this new America, the guy with three eyes wants a three-eyed god. The guy with horns on his head wants a god with horns on his head. The guy who worships an old sock hanging from a tree in his backyard wants that in City Hall. To satisfy all, means to have a slogan or images that are so plain wrap as to be as meaningless as having a slogan on the wall at City Hall that says: "BE" and a religious symbol that is just a swatch of color such as blue.


"Hey, wait a minute," says the guy in the front row. "I'm offended by the slogan 'BE'. My religion says 'DO'. And, my religion teaches that the color blue is evil."


Welcome to Babel. The future is now. Is this what you thought it would be like? Weren't you really expecting to have a personal jet pack or a flying car in your garage instead of a country that is falling apart? And, did you ever think you'd have a president who refuses to show his birth certificate when some claim he wasn't born in the U.S.?

WOULD COSTA MESA BE BETTER OFF WITHOUT INHOUSE POLICE AND FIRE DEPARTMENTS?

Many cities are policed by the Sheriff and have their fire fighting done by the OC Fire Authority.

Here's a LINK to an article in the almost daily Daily Pilot about police and fire contracts, and about the high salaries and great benefits that members of both departments get from the citizens of Costa Mesa.

Although you won't see this reflected in the above linked article nor in the comments from readers, many citizens of Costa Mesa have been concerned for several years about how the police and fire unions use their built-in prestige to try to elect City Council members in Costa Mesa even though most of the police officers--more than 75% by last count, and probably a similar percentage of fire fighters--don't live in Costa Mesa and can't vote here.

One thing that would restore confidence in these departments would be for them to stop trying to elect Councilmembers who are in their pockets.

Some Commissioners say that they spend lots of time driving around checking on projects so they deserve the $ 400 per month that the City pays them.

Baloney!

If the City didn't pay one cent to commissioners, there would still be a line of highly qualified applicants out the door trying to get on the commission.

There is no reason in hell why Costa Mesa Planning Commissioners should be paid $ 400 per month, when cities two and three times our size pay much, much less to their commissioners.

As we wrote before, Huntington Beach, which is twice the size of Costa Mesa, only pays $50 per meeting to its commissioners for three meetings a month=$150 each.

And, why in the hell does the City keep the stupid Parks and Recreation Commission? Its duties should be taken over by the underworked Planning Commissioners.
