Harlan's latest boring column is about the general plan in Costa Mesa, and Harlan writes as though he's talking to children as he tells readers that we should consider all opinions and,  golly, talk to students to get their ideas.

Actually, Harlan, this has all been done.

The main area for future development in Costa Mesa is the Westside, and many of us worked for a long time to put together some Westside Plans that are the blueprint for that area of the city.

Those plans should be followed and not just be put on a shelf every time a Johnny Come Lately like Harlan shows up with apparently no knowledge of the Westside Plans.

The wheel has already been invented, let's not do it again.

WOMAN STABS HER MOTHER IN COSTA MESA

The CMPD responded to a call of a stabbing last night at 7:00 p.m. in the 400 block of Hamilton Street.

The victim, Alice Simpson, was located in her apartment by a friend. She had sustained multiple
stab wounds to her chest, arms and back. The victim was transported to Western Medical
Center Santa Ana.  Her injuries are not life threatening.

The police determined from the victim that the victim's 18-year-old daughter, Andrea Quanita Simpson,
had stabbed her mother several times after an argument and had then fled.

The suspect was located near Victoria Street and Newport Blvd. and was arrested without
incident. She had the suspected knife in her possession.

"YOU'RE NOT SPECIAL" WELLESLEY, MASS HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER TELLS GRADUATING STUDENTS


A very nice speech that cuts through the usual BS, hints at natural selection, and tells students that not everyone can be best, because there is only one best and this results from competition, not from empty and meaningless platitudes and puffed up grades to boost self-esteem.

However, the speech had a bit more than a smidgen of noblesse oblige to it since Wellesley is 84.6% White and ranks first in U.S. towns and cities in the percentage of adults who hold at least one college degree.

Wellesley has also been ranked as the second most educated town in the U.S.  It is also the home to prestigious Wellesley College. In other words, the students at this school are mostly all high performing individuals who really are special as compared to the general population. As such, they can take it when someone says they're not special because it will just spur them on to greater efforts.

Imagine the outrage if such a speech were given to a school with mostly Black or Hispanic students.

Wellesley is jokingly known by many of us who grew up not far from there as Swellesley.

AN EXAMPLE OF HOW PROPAGANDISTS WORK


As you know, because you read the CM PRESS, there is a growing call in Israel to deport Blacks.

The writer of that article argues that since Jews are "refugees" and have also been the subject of similar attempts to force them out of various countries, that they and the Black refugees who they now want to boot out of Israel are the same.

See what she's done?

She's trying to convince her Jewish readers that their real identity is not as Jews but as "refugees."

The hope of those pushing such substitute identities--in this case "refugee"--is that this substitute identity will seep into the national consciousness such that it will replace the natural identity "Jew," and there will be an outcry from the dumb masses (masses are always dumb) to let more people "just like us" ("We're all refugees."), into the country.

MANSOOR IN TROUBLE IN NOVEMBER?


If what the CM PRESS expects to happen in today's primary election does happen; that is, that Mansoor along with the Shrunken Head will remain standing, then we think that Mansoor will have a tough fight on his hands in November and that there's a high probability that he may lose.

The reason is that the Shrunken Head will more easily be able to appeal to Democrats and liberal Republicans than Mansoor, and she'll also appeal to Latinos, women and some other groups including many voters from Newport Beach and even Laguna Beach and Huntington Beach who will vote geography and consider her to be one of theirs.

So, the best result from today's primary for Mansoor would be if the Sissy Hair Guy knocks off the Shrunken Head.  If this happens, we believe the probability for a Mansoor win in November would be great.

1) Funny how you pick and choose pieces of my statements and use them out of context.

[ What's out of context? We simply took your dense paragraph apart sentence by sentence so what you are saying can be more easily seen.  We are doing the same here.]

2) The Board can vote to continue with the same trash contractor with Fitzpatrick remaining on the Board. That is not the reason they ask him to resign. duh!

[So what?  No one denies that they can continue with the same long term contract and not go to open bids with Fitzpatrick on the board. Everybody knows that.  It takes three votes to change things, and Fitzpatrick is just one vote.  

Our guess is that some of the in-crowd are upset because Fitzpatrick is making a public issue out of the fact that the contract hasn't gone out for an open bid and that he's not just going to go along to get along over there, but is doing what he was elected to do.]

3)I have stated many times I do not believe there would be long term savings for residents by putting the contract out to bid. 

[Your "opinion," is just that, one opinion. Your opinion carries no more weight that any other private citizen's opinion.  However, it does carry less weight than Fitzpatrick's opinion since he was elected, and you weren't. 

 As a principle of good governance, those entrusted with the public's business should try to get the best deals possible for the public.  The way that this is often done is by letting the free market work by letting service providers bid on a contract.  It sounds to the CM PRESS as though Fitzpatrick is simply saying put the contract out for a bid.]

There are many factors to consider regarding the trash contract. I recommend residents go to the CMSD website and review recents reports regarding this issue. There are too many factors involved for this comment.

4) I have been a Costa Mesa resident for over 25 years and always been happy with the trash service and rate. 
[So what?  Maybe, we'd get better service and a better rate if the contract were put out for a bid.]

5) I do believe Fitzpatrick holding both seats if illegal and two legal opinions support this.
Fitzpatrick is being stubborn by not resigning. I believe the other Board members are looking out for the best interest of the District and the residents by following through with this lawsuit.

[Fitzpatick has resigned from the Planning Commission. No possible conflict now exists. The issue is moot.]

6) I do encourage residents to go to the Board meetings and find out for themselves just what is going on rather than believing your story.

[The CM PRESS has gone to Board meetings.  That's not the issue.  The issue is whether or not the contract should be put out to bid, and if not, why not?

Your comments in defense of not putting the contract out to bid seem to be along the lines of :  We are the Board and we know what's best. If we want to give a lucrative contract to a trash hauler without checking what other trash haulers might charge, we'll do that. ]

Thanks for your comments, but we'd be surprised if you didn't shop around a little in your private life before contracting for services and products.  Government should do the same thing, and if it doesn't do this, the people who pay for government have a right to know why not.

Just because toilets are sometimes called thrones doesn't mean the Board members and employees of the Costa Mesa Sanitary District  are kings and queens and needn't answer to the serfs.

THE OBFUSCATION CONTINUES


There seems to be a lot of resistance from the Costa Mesa Sanitary District and/or its friends to put our trash contracts (and perhaps other contracts as well?) out for bids.

Why?

Isn't it  fairly well established that the best way to get the best products, prices and services is by having suppliers compete for the business?

Remember when Detroit was giving us lousy cars and we didn't have many other choices?

Then, the Japanese came in with better cars at better prices. Suddenly, Detroit had to compete for our business and that's when American cars started getting better.

Competition works. The free market works.

Our guess is that there are more than a few private trash haulers that would love to bid on the business Costa Mesa can give them.

Let's let them bid on our business and let the hauler that can give us the best service and price win the right to pick up our trash.

Isn't that what Jim Fitzpatrick is asking?  Does that sound radical or extremist?

You disagreed with two attorneys’ decisions just like you disagreed with everything I mentioned above. You are just a person who thrives on dissension. If there isn’t any, you will create it. Now you’re trying to side step your irresponsible actions by resigning from the Planning Commission and whining about some personal vendetta.

[Actually, sherryk1, the attorneys may have given their opinions, but that's all they were--opinions.  Half of all attorneys are wrong in their opinions in every courtroom in the country every day.]

Let me be clear, I DO NOT believe CMSD is wasting tax dollars needlessly. Why should we look the other way with regard to your actions? Just because you can call Joe Serna and he writes these articles for you doesn’t mean you are right in your assertions.  And secondly, if you were really trying to be a credible Director working on behalf of the people, you would LISTEN to them. Listening involves being able to accept both compliments and criticism…why don’t you try listening to your constituents instead of constantly defending your actions. Another basic concept called Communications 101. You fail.

[This whole paragraph is just an attempt to obfuscate and says nothing of substance.  Look at each sentence individually and you'll clearly see this.

As far as I am concerned, it is entirely appropriate to pursue legal action to unseat a Director who is doing something illegal. You knowingly kept your San District seat AFTER you were notified by Legal Counsel that your actions are breaking the law. YOU have chosen to waste tax payer money. Art Perry asked for your resignation at a Board meeting PRIOR to filing the lawsuit. You had no response. YOU have taken the tax payers down this road. This is called Accountability 101, another basic government principal.

[Again, half of all attorneys are wrong in their opinions every day. Furthermore, the issue is moot since Fitzpatrick has now resigned from the Planning Commission. 

Doesn't it sound as though  sherryk1 doesn't want Fitzpatrick to be inside at the CMSD where he can see exactly what is going on?

Doesn't it also sound as though sherryk1 is inadvertently making the CMSD sound even more like a private club instead of a government agency?  

And, doesn't it seem as though the private club members are trying to get rid of Fitzpatrick because he is doing his job and asking questions on behalf of the citizens of the city? ]

Folks, there may be absolutely nothing wrong with the way the CMSD is being run, but how do citizens prevent another City of Bell situation if they don't ask questions of their elected officials and get straight answers?

Many citizens are going to City Council meetings and asking questions.  

Why aren't these same citizens asking questions about the Costa Mesa Sanitary District and also the Mesa Consolidated Water District?

Jim Fitzpatrick is one of the few people asking the tough questions and that's what we elected him to do.
