WOULD COSTA MESA BE BETTER OFF WITHOUT INHOUSE POLICE AND FIRE DEPARTMENTS?

Many cities are policed by the Sheriff and have their fire fighting done by the OC Fire Authority.

Here's a LINK to an article in the almost daily Daily Pilot about police and fire contracts, and about the high salaries and great benefits that members of both departments get from the citizens of Costa Mesa.

Although you won't see this reflected in the above linked article nor in the comments from readers, many citizens of Costa Mesa have been concerned for several years about how the police and fire unions use their built-in prestige to try to elect City Council members in Costa Mesa even though most of the police officers--more than 75% by last count, and probably a similar percentage of fire fighters--don't live in Costa Mesa and can't vote here.

One thing that would restore confidence in these departments would be for them to stop trying to elect Councilmembers who are in their pockets.

The LA TIMES "forgot" to report that this was a racial riot. However, the OCR reported the facts. Isn't it nice when newspapers sometimes just give you all the facts--(as did the OCR in this case) instead of trying to manipulate your perceptions?

Don't we all know that newspapers are supposed to tell us: Who, why, what, where, when and how? Isn't that why we read the news--to get all the facts?

On Saturday afternoon around 5:30 to 6:00 P.M. there was a major fire in a two story apartment building in the 600 block of Center Street.

Dark black smoke was visible from most parts of Westside Costa Mesa.

Fire trucks were deployed on Center St. and in the alley behind the structure. CMPD blocked off Center St. at Pomona Ave.and also at Anaheim and the two alley entrances on both Plumer St. and Pomona Ave.

The writer of this article got a similar response from a reporter in Virginia to one that we got from a reporter at the almost daily Daily Pilot when we asked why the paper doesn't report the race of outstanding non-white suspects, but does report race when the suspects are White. Link

Lefty newspapers now seem to be trying to hide what they don't report by occasionally reporting on the race of outstanding non-white suspects.

Look, this is just common sense. A newspaper that wants to help apprehend violent suspects and help keep people from becoming crime victims will report race/ethnicity and other identifying information in all cases of violent crimes where the suspects are outstanding.

MORE ON THE GROSSLY OVERPAID PLANNING COMMISSIONERS
Some Commissioners say that they spend lots of time driving around checking on projects so they deserve the $ 400 per month that the City pays them.

Baloney!

If the City didn't pay one cent to commissioners, there would still be a line of highly qualified applicants out the door trying to get on the commission.

There is no reason in hell why Costa Mesa Planning Commissioners should be paid $ 400 per month, when cities two and three times our size pay much, much less to their commissioners.

As we wrote before, Huntington Beach, which is twice the size of Costa Mesa, only pays $50 per meeting to its commissioners for three meetings a month=$150 each.

And, why in the hell does the City keep the stupid Parks and Recreation Commission? Its duties should be taken over by the underworked Planning Commissioners.

ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF HOW THE SILLY COUNCIL SPENDS OUR MONEY

At last night's Silly Council meeting, Mayor Pro Tem Leece wanted to cut back the pay of our Planning Commissioners to something reasonable. Leece was voted down by the dumb-water drinking other four big spenders.

Here's what Planning Commissioners make:

Costa Mesa--$400 per month.
Ft. Valley--$50 per meeting (Up to 3 meetings per month.)
Fullerton--$75 per meeting (Two meetings per month.)
Garden Grove--$0
Huntington Beach--$50 per meeting (Up to 3 meetings per month. Note that HB is twice the size of Costa Mesa and is as built out as we are.)
Irvine--$300 per month (Note that Irvine has lots of building going on.)
Newport Beach--$65 per month (Regardless of number of meetings.)
Orange--$60 per meeting (Regardless of number of meetings.)
Santa Ana--$50 per meeting (Max of 3 meetings per month.)

There is no logical reason why Costa Mesa pays more than all these other cities. HB is twice the size of Costa Mesa and pays much less. Irvine, with constant building, also pays less. Santa Ana, which is three times the size of Costa Mesa, only pays $ 50 per meeting.

During public comments, the CM PRESS suggested that the Council (As we had previously suggested in the CM PRESS--#733,June 25, #738,July 1, #745,July 8), dissolve the Parks and Recreation Commission and have the Planning Commission take over their duties. We also suggested that we drop the pay of Planning Commissioners to $ 50 per meeting.

Our suggestions fell on dumb ears, as we say on the street.

THE REAL SIGNIFICANCE OF OBAMA/JOKER POSTER

The real significance of the Obama as the Joker poster may be two-fold:

1. If it truly has gone viral, as some claim, it may indicate that Obama no longer has the Teflon to deflect criticism and open mocking.

2. It's often the case that a single negative image of a politician can start a cascade of dislike for that politician that is difficult or impossible to stop. Is this image the one that will cause such disaffection for Obama? Time will tell. Watch the polls.

ORANGE COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS--HOW REAL ESTATE FORTUNES ARE MADE!

Maybe there really are some folks who want to buy the OC Fairgrounds and keep it as a fairgrounds forever.

However, there have to be some who see it as a chance to make many millions of dollars with very little risk.

Here, by the numbers, is how the gravy train can run for those who want to make a killing in real estate (in simplest terms). Note that the first step can be used both by those who really do want to keep it as a fairgrounds forever and by those who want to make a big profit:

1. Set up a non-profit corporation and buy the fairgrounds as fairgrounds,with fairgrounds zoning--the land is valued much less for such uses than for some other uses--so you'll get it for a song. Tell everyone who will listen that you intend to keep it as fairgrounds forever to help with your charitable causes and to serve Costa Mesa. You especially want to help the kids.

2. Once you own the fairgrounds, landbank it for a couple of years while servicing your debt (at least in part) by intensifying its present fairgrounds uses.

3. Work to elect a friendly Costa Mesa City Council.

4. Once you have a friendly City Council (you only need three of the five to be on board with you) claim that the fairgrounds is not bringing in the money you thought it would and you need a zoning change for a large portion of the land so you can maintain the remaining part as a reduced size fairgrounds in order to continue helping poor children who will all become gang members unless you help them with after school programs, etc.

5. Have your pals on the Costa Mesa City Council vote to change the zoning on a large part of the land to residential, office, retail or even a few institutional uses. (Laugh silently to yourself as you hear your Council stooges talking about Costa Mesa being a city with a heart, and how we have to help the children.)

6. Sell those rezoned parts of the land at the much higher price you'll get with the new zoning. In public, shed [crocodile] tears for the loss of the land but claim that, gee, you need the money to help the poor at risk children. Also say that the new smaller fairgrounds will be much better than the old larger version because you're going to bring in some new activities for children and families.

7. Manipulate public opinion by having your dimwitted surrogates (on the Council, in the blogosphere, and in the local press) claim that those who see what you're doing, and who speak out about it, hate children and especially poor brown children, and that unless you can proceed, these poor brown children will turn to gangs and terrorize the city.

8. Laugh as you go to the bank to count your money.
