OCTOBER ICE STATISTICS

ICE detainers were put on 50 suspected illegal alien criminals in Costa Mesa in the month of October 2008 according to a report by the CMPD received by the CM PRESS today.

Thirteen of these were for felonies.

In October of 2007, there were only 25 ICE detainers.

Good work CMPD and ICE! Your efforts are making Costa Mesa a safer and more desirable city.

CITY COUNCIL REPORT OCTOBER 18, 2008

The two High School Foundations

At tonight's City Council meeting, the CM PRESS asked the Council to look into when we might expect to see the required reports from the Costa Mesa High School Foundation (and also the Estancia/TeWinkle Foundation, if this foundation hasn't supplied them).

Mayor Pro Tem Mansoor then asked the City Manager and City Attorney to look into it.

Shopping Carts

The CM PRESS also suggested that we should cut out the $ 40,000 we're spending to return shopping carts to stores and have the stores, instead of citizens, pay for this service.

FRUGAL TIMES IN FAT CAT CITY

The Costa Mesa City Council held it's study session yesterday and discussed cuts in spending. Here's a link to the almost daily Daily Pilot's article about the meeting. LINK

You will note from reading the article that Katrina Foley appears to be the only member of the Council who doesn't seem to understand that a city, just like a family, can't spend more money than it takes in.

Read between the lines a little and you'll also note that Foley jumped to the defense of the unions that spent thousands of dollars in helping her get elected, even though the vast majority of the members of those unions don't even live in Costa Mesa.

As we've previously stated, Foley is a tax and spend liberal.

The CM PRESS has looked at the City budget, and we're here to tell you that there are many places where cuts can be made and where savings can be realized without laying off City employees or doing things that most citizens will even notice.

Perhaps the City Council might consider putting together a committee of citizens to suggest where such cuts can be made and where savings can be realized.

Of course, if it does form such a committee, expect the committee to be full of lefties who will probably suggest that we raise taxes on citizens to pay for services for illegal aliens.

Start cutting now to save City employee jobs

Many cities are now talking about laying off city employees. Chicago is the latest. [LINK]

The CM PRESS would hate to see that happen in Costa Mesa. To head off anything like that, we think the City should immediately start cutting more fluff from the budget.

Much of this fluff is small change compared to the total budget, but it adds up. It's $ 40,000 here to pick up shopping carts and so much over here for after school day care for illegal aliens and more over here for outside lawn mowing services and some for this and some for that.

Not only will the City see direct results from such tightening up of the budget, but it should also see a psychological benefit as City employees develop frugal habits.

WE WRITE THE GOVERNOR

Dear Governor Schwarzenegger:

It takes a special type of person to get elected to any political office and still be able to remain an outsider and not get involved in the minor details of the office and be pulled in the wrong direction by all the mumbling tiny people who show up as experts to give advice.

I once thought you were that kind of person. A new Alexander who didn't waste his time trying to untie the Gordian Knot, but who just pulled out his sword and slashed it. Problem solved.

Over the past few years though, it seems you've become one of the mumbling tiny people and part of the problem.

Look, this isn't difficult. California has a budget deficit because we're paying out too much in thousands of ways for illegal aliens and we have legislators who are obstructionists to having a balanced budget.

It's time to stop trying to untie the knot a thread at a time--this is a fool's errand--and time to just cut it. New taxes are not needed.

GOVERNMENT SHOULD BE UNOBTRUSIVE

The voters have spoken and we now have four good people on the Costa Mesa City Council who seem to have a solid understanding of the proper role of government--it exists to help citizens, not hinder them.

And the help it offers should be in those areas where government does things best--fix the roads, make the city safe from criminals and do similar essential things.

Government should work to be like a good waiter in a restaurant; invisible, but doing the right job at just the right time in the most unobtrusive way possible. Somehow, in such a restaurant, your glass never gets empty, but you're almost never aware of it being filled.

JOIN THE TEN

Katrina Foley is always whining that she only sees the same ten people at every City Council meeting and that she'd like to see more people there.

Well, the CM PRESS is pretty sure that Foley includes us in the Ten and we agree with Foley.

We need a hundred more at each meeting just like the CM PRESS.

Constant vigilance is required to make sure crackpot lefties don't slip in more phony social programs for illegal aliens.

The way the lefties work in Costa Mesa is that they bring in small social programs and then expand them. If some of Foley's pals had their way, we'd have a new job center that would slowly morph into teaching English, and become a full service charity for illegal aliens.

AND WHAT ABOUT THOSE SHOPPING CARTS?

Come on City Council, get the stores to pick up their own shopping carts and stop making the citizens of Costa Mesa pay $ 40,000 per year to provide a pick up service for stores and illegal aliens.

OC GOP BIGS WANT CHANGES IN PARTY

According to an article in the almost daily Daily Pilot today, the Lincoln Club says it'll stop funding some Republican politicians in D. C. if the national leadership isn't immediately changed. LINK

We couldn't agree more. In fact, we've been saying that the GOP was a slow moving train wreck during the whole Bush administration.

The GOP has been pushing incompetent politicians, failed policies and lies since Bush took over.

There's no need to rehash the disasters here, but even the party insiders now realize that if the GOP is to survive as a viable political entity, is has to get rid of the bums--who are mostly neocons--and rebuild the GOP on its traditional foundations of smaller government, lower taxes, fiscal responsibility...and...honesty.

We're Republicans here at the CM PRESS--Reagan and Buchanan Republicans--and we've been disgusted for years by bull in the China shop George Bush who has been spending money like a drunken sailor and following a path that has made the U.S. a laughing stock around the world.

Clean the house GOP, before it completely falls down around your ears.

BIG TENT NOT NEEDED

We're amused by those who say that the GOP needs to be a big tent just like the Democrat Party if it is to win elections.

Actually, the two parties are far too much alike already and that's a problem. What's the point of even having different political parties if they're alike?

Political parties are supposed to be organizations with ideas and world views that they want to see implemented because the members believe these particular ideas and world views are better for the nation than other ideas and world views.

One of the flaws of the American political system these days is that it is almost impossible to have viable third parties that have a chance of winning any important political races.

Both parties have to cater to the lumpen masses in the center of the bell curve where mediocrity and conformity reign. They have to do this because, by definition, that's where most of the votes are.

By having both parties catering to the masses and mass tastes, we have a system that is stagnant and which promotes mediocrity.

Maybe it's time to revise our system and go to something more like a European system where there are many viable third parties that strongly advocate for certain positions and which try to convince voters that their positions are the best ones.

A big tent isn't needed. Instead, we need a field of small expandable tents full of people who believe in their ideas and who boldly assert them and who try to convince others that they should enter those tents and help them expand. Call it political natural selection.

Today, we have a Democrat tent and a Republican tent and they're pretty much the same thing. # # #

FIFTEEN THINGS OFF THE TOP OF OUR HEAD THAT WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE CITY COUNCIL DO

1......Make real progress toward undergrounding the SR-55.

2......Make real progress toward keeping John Wayne from expanding.

3......Increase ICE in Costa Mesa and remove even more illegal alien criminals.

4......Speed up the revitalization of the Westside.

5......Encourage more homes on the Westside Bluffs and encourage an "industrial modern" look (see photo above as one example of this style).

6......Increase cooperation with Newport Beach on as many fronts as possible.

7......Increase home ownership and reduce rentals.

8......Thin out dense slum "blocks" by removing individual slum buildings and replacing them with parking lots or pocket parks.

9......Ensure that whatever happens on Banning Ranch doesn't harm Costa Mesa.

10....Encourage landscaping that is appropriate and natural for our climate (see the street medians on Superior in Newport Beach for a clue).

11.....Consider changing our city's motto back to "Hub of the Harbor."

12.....Stop spending citizen money on programs that attract and maintain illegal aliens in Costa Mesa.

13.....Work to make the downtown area around Triangle Square a pedestrian friendly destination.

14.....Work more with individual neighborhoods on neighborhood specific programs to improve those neighborhoods.

15.....Encourage the upgrading of homes throughout the city.

OUR QUICK ANALYSIS

Foley benefited from the fact that nationally this was a Democrat year. Otherwise, we believe she might have been defeated by Righeimer.

Righeimer had the most money to spend in the campaign, but he's only been living in Costa Mesa a couple of years and this hurt him.

In addition, we believe there was a gender factor that helped Foley. This can be seen when you look at Lisa Reedy's fifth place finish. Reedy ran almost no campaign other than putting her name in the official voter's pamphlet.

Had Righeimer been a woman, he might have won. If Righeimer runs again in two years, he may stand a better chance of winning, but our suggestion to him is that he has to hit improvement issues (lower crime, better schools, etc.) harder and not put so much emphasis on development per se.

And, he has to develop the common touch. During the campaign, many Improvers told the CM PRESS that Righeimer didn't seem to listen to their concerns and was often cool to them and acted more like an important GOP Bigwig than the guy next door. In other words, he didn't connect with them.

Righeimer also sent signals that he was too willing to get along with the other side and would compromise too easily on important improvement issues.

The CM PRESS had believed all along that Gary Monahan would be the top vote getter and that Nick Moss (who ran almost no campaign) would come in last. And, that's what happened.

YOUR NEW CITY COUNCIL
The new Costa Mesa City Council will have an improvement minded super-majority of Eric Bever, Allan Mansoor, Gary Monahan, Wendy Leece. This will be good for making some real strides toward getting Costa Mesa back on track.

Katrina Foley will be powerless to screw up our city.
