KATRINA FOLEY'S LATEST POLITICAL STUNT--A COAT DRIVE--HAS BEEN

BOOTED OUT OF THE CMPD LOBBY---GOOD!

Mother Teresa Foley is a political opportunist who tries to link her name to various events and charities to build good will for the next election.

In the PR and advertising biz, linking your name or your company name to some do-good thing without a direct call to action to buy something or to vote for someone comes under the rubric of "institutional advertising."

All this means is that the product (in this case Foley) is linked to various high profile do-good things to give the brand (Foley) a halo effect that seeps into the unconscious of an unsuspecting public.

Now, Foley was supported in the just past election by the Cop union and she has thanked them for donating coats to HER, yes HER--WITH HER NAME EMBLAZONED ON THE CHARITY political institutional ad campaign, and she wanted to put a clothes collection station in the lobby of the CMPD HQ.

Apparently, city officials saw through this stunt and denied her request. Good!

Now, dear pathological altruists and oinkers out there, never fear, there will be no illegal alien children going cold this winter as there are plenty of places in the city where Mother Teresa Foley can put collection stations that do not link her and the CMPD together at the hip--which is what she was trying to do.

HUMPHREY CONCEDES

Figured he couldn't make up the 47 vote lead of Righeimer. A wise choice. Humphrey has actually been one of the politest opponents of the Righeimer Council over the past couple of years.

But, politeness does not improvement make and what Costa Mesa needs right now is more improvement.

This means we need people on the council--such as Mayor Righeimer and Mayor Pro Tem Mensinger--who understand real estate; and especially retail real estate which involves demographics much more than other types of real estate.

In retail real estate, professionals have to find the right mix of tenants to make shopping centers and shopping streets (such as E. 17th and now W. 19th) develop a synergy that benefits all the retailers and attracts customers. And in doing this, and doing it right, residential neighborhoods backing up to commercial areas benefit in increased property values as people move in to be near the "hip" shopping areas. And, in doing it right a city is transformed. Crime goes down. Property values go up. Schools improve. Quality of life rises.

Humphrey, Leece, Foley, and Genis have no retail real estate experience. It's Greek to them. They are useless as far as improvement goes. They just don't have the right knowledge or perspective to understand how you shape a city for the benefit of the citizens.

The lack of knowledge of retail real estate was made abundantly clear by now fromer Councilperson Wendy Leece's constant carping about how Righeimer and Mensinger et al. should publicly tell everyone all the nitty gritty of their activities at the ICSC (International Conference of Shopping Centers). Folks, that's not the way the retail real estate biz works. It's a relationship business. Deals are made based on friendships, trust and confidentiality. Don't get it? Suppose you're a CEO of a major chain of stores and you meet the mayor at the ICSC and the mayor convinces you that you should open a store in Costa Mesa. Well, you have competitors who might like to know what you're planning. If they find out, it may ruin your plans and cost you millions of dollars. Leece apparently doesn't understand this.

Righeimer and Mensinger understand it, and to a lesser but on a more personal level so does Monahan. That's what we need on the council.

And, just as an aside, did you read that two more young men have been shot in Santa Ana, HERE? It's almost a nightly occurrence in that city just north of us. Improvement will keep Costa Mesa from becoming a new Santa Ana. It's about demographics, folks. People matter. Be a city that attracts upwardly mobile people and we all benefit. Be a city that attracts downwardly mobile people and we all suffer.

MAYOR RIGHEIMER WARNED COSTA MESANS THAT WE WOULD HAVE MANY LAWSUITS OVER SOBER LIVING HOMES

And two lawsuits have now been filed. More to come. Count on it.

A city has to be very careful with a protected class of people and laws have to be carefully crafted so that there is no discrimination.

Keep in mind, as we've written before, the courts look at sober living homes as though they are the same as regular family homes. So, if you write laws and apply them to sober living homes, you also have to apply them to regular family homes or you're more than likely going to lose in court.

The legal difficulty is in trying to distinguish between sober living homes and regular family homes in a way that the courts will find meaningful. Just saying that the residents of the sober living homes aren't related is not going to fly. So, what is it that distinguishes sober living homes from regular family homes that the courts will accept as a reason to close them down or limit them in some ways?

Well, Costa Mesa is saying things such as the residents smoke outside or that they make noise or that they swear or do other things that disrupt the neighborhood and the quiet enjoyment of the residents of adjacent properties. And, while these claims may be true in some cases, we're not sure the courts will find them sufficient; simply because these behaviors can also be found in regular family homes and no one is shutting them down or telling the owners that they can't let people stay in those homes.

You see the problem.

IMPROVEMENT THOUGHTS

The Westside Plans are working well, now we'd like to see the new Righeimer Council start coming up with some creative ideas to thin out or remove the functionally obsolete military barracks style slum apartments found in Mesa del Mar, North Costa Mesa and over near Wilson--just to name three areas that really need some improvement.

By creative, I mean the council might...

a) Offer super incentives for private developers so they can afford to buy, tear down and replace some of the slum buildings with modern, desirable housing--maybe even with single family homes to replace the decrepit and over crowded slum apartments.

b) Plan to put in some more sports fields right where they're needed by buying up slum buildings on the open market and assembling parcels until large enough contiguous pieces can be put together to become sports fields. Perhaps a public/private partnership might be needed to get over various legal hurdles, but life is all about overcoming obstacles.

Just a few months, maybe even weeks, ago, Ebola was front page news just about every day. Now it seems to be cloistered in less read areas of the media.

Maybe this is just natural--story fatigue--but I have to wonder if some in the MSM are actually being paid off in some way to do just the reverse of product placement with Ebola; which is to say, bury the stories and don't assign any reporters to write about it.

When I lived in NYC, one of my day jobs was PR/advertising/marketing related and my office was in a building with similar firms. One of the PR firms had an account with an airline company.

One of the duties of that PR firm was killing or burying stories about parts (including engines or major parts of engines, apparently) falling off planes in international travel. They accomplished this via their friends at the major newspapers. If stories did run, they were way back in the papers and were small and written in non-sensational ways to minimize the problem and not cause panic among air travellers.

So, is something similar happening now with Ebola suddenly leaving the front pages of dead tree newspapers and the Internet?

COSTA MESA FINDS 18 BEDS IN A GROUP HOME ON SENATE STREET--11 MORE BEDS THAN ALLOWED

18 beds found in sober-living house during city inspection

Costa Mesa officials armed with an inspection warrant found 18 beds—11 more than legally allowed for group homes in residential neighborhoods—during an unannounced visit Tuesday to a sober-living residence on Senate Street.

A Superior Court judge issued the warrant on Nov. 10 after city officials provided evidence that the operators of the sober-living home in the 600 block of Senate Street had moved in additional beds just hours after a city inspection on Oct. 29.

During Tuesday’s inspection, city officials found seven beds in one of the bedrooms.

City officials said they are exploring all criminal and civil options regarding the violation.

“We won’t tolerate these kind of bad neighbors in Costa Mesa,” said City CEO Tom Hatch. “This illegal operation damages the quality of life in our neighborhoods and casts a bad light on conscientious operators of group homes in our community.”

For the past eight months, neighbors have made a variety of complaints about the two-story, six-bedroom group home—operated by Serenity Shores Recovery Center—including loud arguments, profanity, trash, excessive traffic and cigarette smoke, advertised Alcoholic Anonymous meetings, and loitering.

On April 24, the city issued a violation notice to the property owner, Saroj Gupta of Orange, after Costa Mesa firefighters on a medical call to the property were told 16 people lived in the house. The notice asked that occupancy be reduced to a maximum of seven (six clients and a house manager), as required by law.

After the property owner repeatedly failed to comply, the city issued a citation on Sept. 30 and scheduled an inspection for Oct. 29. During that inspection, code enforcement officials found six beds. Less than three hours later, the city received photos of two trucks moving additional beds into the house.

You see, when one has a belly that makes one look pregnant all the time; or, even worse, when in addition to that behemoth anterior deformity, one also has a sunken chest and tiny little muscles, squishy flesh, a strangulated squeal of a voice, a sickly and weak appearance, and no testosterone caused male facial bone structure, and when one considers all of these features, taken as a whole, does not the picture emerge, with little need of a fertile imagination, of a pot bellied pig wearing a watch and human clothes?

Well, then, if our observations are correct, might we not believe that someone with such aforementioned characteristics might enviously view any healthy looking (and cruelly handsome, I might add) man, who is EXACTLY at his correct weight--to the pound--(such as yours truly, for example), and at his fighting weight, according to medical weight charts, as looking cadaverous?

Or, in other words, might it not be the case that a decrepit pot bellied pig might oink that a sleek and nice looking lion, full of the life force and vigor, is cadaverous in order to justify his own, ah, peculiar look?

In the above linked Daily Pilot article, the mayor says this:

"The message is that the community is 50-50 on the important issues," he said. "As an elected official, you have to look at that. They didn't go out there and give you a mandate to do whatever you're doing and continue to do."

We disagree. You do have a mandate. You could have won by one vote and this would have still been a mandate. Your mandate is to keep improving Costa Mesa. Period.

You sat respectfully on the dais and did a professional job in helping improve Costa Mesa for the past four years and what you got for your good efforts was a constant barrage of hate aimed at you by local scumbags who turned city council meetings into circus sideshows and who even called you a Hitler, a Mussolini and a dictator among other things.

You also had some city employees doing everything in their power--while on the city payroll--to undermine you and your efforts.

Through it all, you were polite and professional and you stayed on the improvement track. You showed true leadership under fire.

It's not easy to be called names every day and go home to your wife and kids and try to explain that the haters are wrong and that they are neurotic low I.Q. losers and the scum of the Earth.

Don't compromise with the haters. Stay on track. Constant improvement is the way!

MARRIAGE PLEDGE

Prominent pastors pledge to not be agents of the government in supporting gay marriage.

They are asking more pastors to sign the pledge.

What it means is that they will no longer give their religious blessings to same sex marriages or even sign marriage certificates supplied by the government.

They will only conduct marriages between people of their faith who uphold the traditions of their faith.

In the U.S. we have a myth of freedom of religion and a wall between religion and the state, but what we actually have is the state dictating to religious people and demanding that they give up their religious beliefs or be punished in some way--often by having their tax exempt status revoked.

This intrusion by the government of the U.S. into religion is not new. The early Mormons had to give up polygamy in order to have Utah gain statehood and the benefits of statehood and to stop being persecuted by the government.

Other religions have faced similar dictates by the government. The present demands that religious people treat same sex marriage as the same as male/female marriage is the latest hot button. Stay tuned to see how it turns out.

Teresa, cops don't pull people over randomly. There must be probable cause, which must stand up in court, or the case would be thrown out. Take a look at the California Vehicle code. There are over 40,000 reasons why a cop can pull a car over, but the simple ones like expired registration, improper registration tabs, and broken lights, are often the easiest to spot and make up the most common traffic offenses. Once there's a legal reason to pull a car over, the officer can start other investigations - like a DUI investigation - even though that was not the initial reason for the stop. Most people who believe they were pulled over for no reason, have never looked at the California Vehicle code.

Here's the truth: "Probable cause," is not required. A lower standard of "reasonable suspicion" is all that's needed for a cop to pull over a car.

This is often stated as "articulable reasonable suspicion." And, all a cop needs to do is say that he believed the driver was swerving or driving too slowly or too fast--even if that's not the case.

We believe that some cops are simply lurking near bars and restaurants at certain times of night and are stopping as many cars as they can in the expectation that they'll probably stumble across someone who has been drinking and driving.

In order to catch as many impaired drivers as possible, we believe they are engaged in quick catch and release procedures.

As we previously reported, the CM PRESSMOBILE has been stopped twice by cops in Costa Mesa even though we don't drink or do drugs and we weren't coming from bars or restaurants.

Both stops were bogus--the first stop was for "impeding" even though our car and the cop car were the only two cars on the road and the cop was even going in the opposite direction (!), and we were going the speed limit. We didn't get a ticket for anything, because, again, the excuse for stopping us was bogus.

The second bogus stop was because we supposedly "didn't stop before turning right on a red light (we did stop)." We didn't get a ticket once the cop realized we hadn't been drinking or doing drugs.

We figure the cops in both bogus stops didn't want to waste time writing up bogus tickets and just wanted to get back on the road to stop others who came along into their net.
