INFORMATION (A LOT OF IT) HERE ON THE PROPOSED EXPANSION OF OCC

What does the CM PRESS think is really going on?  We think OCC is looking down the road to becoming a full four year university and is putting the pieces in place so that can happen.

If so, we think it's a great idea and helps establish Costa Mesa as more of a college town, which isn't a bad thing.

Of course, this is just us thinking out loud and we have no hard facts to give you.  We will say, however, that about ten years ago, we suggested to a top administrator at OCC that the school should become a four year university.  He just about laughed us off campus and said that wouldn't be possible.

But, what have we now read?  Several California junior colleges are now offering some four year degrees.

Maybe we were prescient.

UPDATE: We got a private message about this and the writer disagrees with our crystal ball look and maintains that the moves by OCC are to attract more Chinese students (and their moola) and that's the reason for the hotel.  Might  be right.  My crystal ball told me that the hotel was just a dorm in waiting.  We'll have to wait to see.

We could fill the CM PRESS every day with news of new species being discovered.  Unfortunately, we think such stories mislead people into thinking that many of these species have been here all along and that scientists have finally discovered them.

This may be the way it is in some cases, but in addition to these shy species, nature is a tireless tinkerer with life and is never finished and never will be.  Nature is modifying organisms constantly, and when the modifications become great enough we have a new species.

It wasn't hiding.  It has just crossed the threshold of specieshood.

This process is also going on in humans.

ARTICLE ABOUT SUN CAUSING 'DAMAGE' TO DNA EVEN AFTER DARK

Pop-science article that fails to go deep enough, so I'll go deeper. Firstly, just to clarify an unstated fact as background: "damage" to DNA, which  really should be called "changes" to DNA from the sun or cosmic rays or nuclear radiation or other sources are not qualitatively different based on the source of the changes.  All of the aforementioned things, and many unmentioned, have the ability to change the DNA code, but the changes are the same.  It's like pounding in a nail with a hammer or a rock or the side of the wrench.  The source of the pounding makes little difference.

Secondly, the changes that occur can cause mutations that are good, bad or neutral.  And, it can be argued that such changes, say, from the sun, is one reason that we see rapid evolution and more variety among people with less melanin.

BIRDMAN TO GET OSCARS?

If you saw the film and weren't impressed, you are probably not a culture vulture (and, in my book, not being a culture vulture is a good thing), and you probably didn't get all the inside stuff that was going on in the film that may cause culture vultures to give it a bunch of Oscars.

To understand the film you have to realize that there is a rivalry between New York theater and New York actors on one side and Hollywood films and  Hollywood actors on the other side.

To culture vultures, New York actors are often considered artists, and New York theater is often considered true art, while Hollywood actors are often considered to not be artists and Hollywood films are often considered to not be true art. (Yes, there are many exceptions and there is a great deal of bicoastalism going on these days.)

In Birdman, Michael Keaton plays a Hollywood actor who got rich and famous playing superhero Birdman in the movies.  That Birdman is a barely disguised Batman should be obvious to even the most casual movie watcher.  In fact, in one scene, Keaton's character mentions the last time he had a hit was when he played "Birdman in 1992."  Yup, you guessed it.  Keaton's last stint as Batman was also in 1992.

At any rate, Keaton's character is now washed up and to try to get back in the game, he writes, directs and acts in a play on Broadway (in the real world, doing all three is often a recipe for disaster).

{SNIP} To know more, you'll have to see the movie. It's out on DVD now.  I will say that a lot of what you see in the film is what many of us who have acted both in New York and in Hollywood films have experienced to one degree or another.

And speaking of acting in New York, here's a  SONG about some of the people I did plays with in New York.  Three of the people named in this song were in Glamour, Glory and Gold along with Robert DeNiro and me. 

When I did this play, I hadn't been out of the Marines very long, and some have suggested that DeNiro used some of my characteristics for his ex-Marine character, Travis Bickle, in Taxi Driver.

The Jackie mentioned in the song was Jackie Curtis who sometimes dressed and looked like a woman and sometimes dressed and looked a little like James Dean, and you'll hear a line in the song about that. Jackie wrote the play, and acted in it, but did not direct it.

ISLAMIC STATE BEHEADS 21 EGYPTIAN CHRISTIANS

The Islamic State is going for broke and moving full speed ahead.

They believe they are doing God's will and that if it is His will that they succeed they will, and if it is His will that they don't succeed they won't, but in either case they believe they must do His will and play their part.

This type of thinking is alien to many of us who believe that we, as humans, should try to live as long as possible, and to do this we shouldn't throw caution to the wind. Those in the Islamic State, however, apparently look at humans, including themselves, as chess pieces being moved about by God in ways that the humans may not understand. And, even if they are destined to be pawns who are destroyed, they believe that this is part of God's plan for some greater purpose.

Thus, if the Islamic State succeeds, that's okay with the believers, and if it doesn't succeed, that's also okay with the believers.  They simply must do the best they can to succeed because this is what God wants them to do.

Where can we put some more open and wild space in Costa Mesa? 

Perhaps we should form a committee to decide which sports fields we should remove and let nature take over.

Clearly, we don't have enough open and wild space and without it, our kids (who are our future) have no place to experience nature qua nature. 

With sports fields, our kids get highly structured and regimented games played on carefully manicured fields that might as well be made of plastic and be under glass domes.

With open and wild space, the kids get to experience nature and start to get an understanding of the nature of life and existence. 

Some might even become naturalists in the mold of Charles Darwin and begin to understand that to answer some of the big questions of existence we simply need to observe nature, and ask questions as to why this or that insect or plant or other organism is the way it is.  Why does this plant have thorns and this one doesn't?  Why is this flower yellow and this one red?  Why does this tree have this kind of bark? What benefit is it to the tree? Why does this bird have this kind of beak while this other closely related bird has a different kind of beak?

To understand differences is to understand nature.

4. Raze some slums and put in sports fields.
5. See if a large landowner will donate some land.
6. Cover the 55 trench and put in sports fields up above.
7. Use that field on Bristol formerly occupied by a storage company.
8. Redesign the golf course to carve out some sports fields.

AGENDA FOR THE 2/17/15 CITY COUNCIL MEETING

There is an item on the agenda for the use of CDBG funds to pay for the work already done to repave an alley HERE.

 If the  CM PRESS had our druthers we'd be using CDBG funds and other available money for the purchase of slum buildings. Paperwork wise, this is more difficult than repairing an alley, but where there's a will, there's a way.

The main requirement of using CDBG funds is that they be used in low income areas.  The way the City chooses to use those funds to improve such areas is fairly open ended.  So, why doesn't the City start removing slum buildings and putting in needed parking lots and pocket parks at least temporarily until enough parcels can be assembled to put in needed sports fields?

I repeat: Where there's a will, there's a way.

We just need councilmembers to see the major benefits we'll get if we thin out and remove slum buildings and put in the much needed parking and pocket parks and eventually sports fields.

Put the money into fixing alleys that aren't that bad or removing slums.  Which is more important?

The community can find consensus

Since June 2013, the nine-member Fairview Park Citizens Advisory Committee has met monthly to diligently study and make recommendations on a variety of issues related to the future of our city’s natural crown jewel, Fairview Park and Wetlands.

The committee—helped by significant input from residents and expertise provided by city staff—has found remarkable consensus on most issues involving the 206-acre park. I am extremely proud of the group.  As the City Council liaison during most of the committee’s work, this has been a wonderful cooperative process to witness. The notable exception to the harmony among the committee members has been whether more active uses—archery, community gardens, sports fields, skate parks, even an amphitheater—should be allowed in the southeast section of the park (part of the acreage where model trains run on five miles of track). Rumors have even spread about a proposed Casino, which is clearly ridiculous.

Last month, the committee voted 5-4 to ask city staff to study possibility of combining sports fields with the train to that section of the park. This has been a classic community debate: in a city that’s short on playing fields (especially lighted ones), should a portion of Fairview Park’s open space—already in use as a miniature train depot—be combined with a more active use or just be left alone? And do Fairview Park’s sensitive environmental and archeological areas propose serious challenges to any kind of new activity there.

At the Fairview Park meetings, the debate over this issue has been vigorous, with the advocates for leaving the park alone outnumbering proponents of sports fields. Anyone who knows me will attest to the fact that there’s no stronger advocate for solving our field space issues than me. Our children deserve them, and our city will attract and maintain more families with better open space sports facilities. But I’m concerned at the divisiveness this issue is creating at Fairview Parks Citizens Advisory Committee meetings and spreading in the community. As I see it, both sides have persuasive arguments. And I think this issue is important enough that we should know exactly how all Costa Mesa residents feel about it. We could put the matter on the ballot, but that would be costly, messy and divisive.

Our community can find consensus, and I’m proposing this: Let’s call a brief time out and conduct a community consensus survey to determine if Costa Mesa residents want sports fields on the southeast quadrant of Fairview Park. The survey would be relatively inexpensive, but provide everyone with the first unambiguous picture of what residents really want in that section of Fairview Park. If the overwhelming majority say don’t touch Fairview Park (which, by the way, I believe is a strong possibility), then the Fairview Park Citizens Advisory Committee will have clear direction and be able to wrap up its work. On the other hand, if the survey shows Costa Mesans are undecided or definitely would like sports fields at Fairview Park, then the committee (and eventually the Parks and Recreation Commission and City Council) could determine the feasibility of sports fields there.

I will propose the idea of a Fairview Park community consensus survey at the March 3 City Council meeting. I believe a well-done statistically valid survey of Costa Mesans on this issue would provide an equal playing field for all involved.

DAILY PILOT ARTICLE ON INTERIM POLICE CHIEF RON LOWENBERG WHO STARTS TODAY IN COSTA MESA

The good news is that Lowenberg is an ex-Marine and the comment below by Lowenberg that is in the above Daily Pilot article is Marine speak. You've seen similar statements from the CM PRESS:

"What I have found in talking with the folks [police officers] I have talked to so far," said Lowenberg, "is that they're true professionals. They understand being mission-focused. They're still delivering quality police service, even with some of these distractions occurring."

The key words are "professionals," and "mission-focused."

And, the bad news?  We're not sure there is any, however, we have noted that Lowenberg seems to have been involved with some human rights organizations.  Some of them are good, and some of them are just plain anti-White and seem to go out of their way to label any real or bogus report of  some White kid who so much as frowns at a non-White as a hate incident or hate crime, while at the same time overlooking actual physical attacks on Whites by non-Whites.

It looks like Lowenberg is hitting the ground running, so he'll be the cause and we'll have to wait to see the effects, which should happen fairly quickly if we've read him correctly.
