North--Santa Ana--Man punched and robbed by several men in chocolate city this morning.
South--Newport Beach--No one punched and robbed again in vanilla city again today.
What's your opinion, do you think we should follow the almost daily Daily Pilot's lead on this and use their term for Newport Beach--"vanilla"?
If so, we'll also use the opposite term--"chocolate"--for Santa Ana.
Of course, the Pilot doesn't mind calling Newport the derisive term "vanilla," because that refers to white people and white culture, but the paper would never think of calling Santa Ana "chocolate." Lefties are so predictable. Whites bad. Browns good.
If you've been reading the CM PRESS for a while, you'll already know that there is very little violent crime in vanilla Newport Beach but almost daily violent crime incidents in chocolate Santa Ana.
How can this be? Does it have something to do with the flavors? Which city would you rather live in, vanilla city or chocolate city?

THE CM PRESS SPECULATED RECENTLY THAT NON-WHITES--ESPECIALLY LATINOS--SEEM TO DIE MORE FROM THE SWINE FLU THAN WHITES
Well...now there's a study that partly confirms this. Blacks and Latinos apparently need hospitalization four times more than whites when they get the swine flu because the disease is more serious in them. LINK
However, we think the researchers are mistaken in the article linked to above with their guess that there may not be a direct genetic component to this. No, we don't have any data about this, just instinct and some minor level of knowledge about genes and mutations.
Our hypothesis (which we did not originate) is that most whites have a resistance to the worst effects of the swine flu (and many other viral diseases as well); possibly because most whites now alive are the descendants of the survivors of various plagues that wiped out millions of Europeans centuries ago. Some of these survivors were probably just lucky, but many may have had certain mutations that protected them. Then, goes the hypothesis, those that survived, passed on their mutations to their children so that today, most white people have the mutations that protect them.
You may also recall that when Europeans first visited Central and South America, millions of natives died from germs carried by the Europeans while the Europeans didn't get sick from the germs they were carrying. Our guess is that this immunity may not have been the result of the Europeans having had the diseases and then recovering, and thereafter carrying the antibodies in their blood, but that they didn't get sick because they had the mutations we mentioned in the prior paragraph.

CMPD DUI CHECKPOINT RESULTS
During the CMPD's DUI checkpoint at Wilson and Pomona last night, 570 vehicles drove through the checkpoint, 237 vehicles were stopped, and17 drivers were screened for driving under the influence. One driver was arrested for DUI and one driver was arrested for possession of marijuana for sales. In addition, 5 drivers were cited for no licenses and 1 for driving on a suspended license. A total of 12 citations were issued for miscellaneous vehicle code violations and 7 vehicles were impounded.
The next DUI checkpoint will be on September 1. No location given yet.

Brady Rhoades, the editor of the almost daily Daily Pilot, has a blog today (HERE) in which he wants you to know that it's not his fault that the writers at the paper are "monochromatic" (In this context, doesn't he really mean that they are too "white"?).
Happened before he took charge, he says. Too many white people snuck through the darn door under the old regime, apparently. (Hmmm. [Eyes narrow to slits.]Makes you wonder about the hidden motives of the old regime, doesn't it? Why did they let all those white people in? Hmmm.)
And doggone it, it's just so hard for the too-white reporters to find diversity in "very vanilla Newport Beach." (Unless you've been off planet, you understand that "vanilla"is often a derisive term for white people and white cultural and societal norms.)
Never fear, though, Brady has urged his reporters to try hard to find that diversity and, by golly, he's looking for a Latino (read, a brown person) to write a column about Latino life and especially on the Westside of Costa Mesa.
Drill down to what Rhoades is really writing, overlook his sidestepping plausible deniability semantics, and then substitute a few terms based less on dictionary definitions and more on the way terms are actually used in our society and then change the city to see if Rhoades' blog passes the sniff test: The reporters at the paper are too "brown" and it's difficult to find white people in "very chocolate" Santa Ana.
But, maybe we have it wrong. What say you?
Please don't waste your time writing that what Rhoades wrote is fine because the antonym of monochromatic is polychromatic or because he threw in "minorities,* gays, you name it," as what he seeks in diversity. The terms Rhoades uses have street meanings just as "sick" means "good" in current street parlance and in certain contexts.
One last thing. If Rhoades has to look so hard to find diversity in Newport-Mesa, maybe the type of diversity he wants just isn't a major factor here and maybe he'd be happier working for a newspaper in less monochromatic and less vanilla Fullerton where he lives. Or, he can always try Watts.

The Costa Mesa Police Department will be conducting a sobriety / driver license checkpoint on Wednesday, August 26, 2009, from 6:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. The checkpoint will be located westbound Wilson Street, at Pomona Avenue. In addition to law breakers, the checkpoint is to bring about awareness to the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or without a valid driver's license.

As a recipient of Federal funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the City of Costa Mesa has initiated the process to prepare a five-year housing and community needs strategic plan.
In order obtain the input of community residents, businesses and other stakeholders, a Community Needs Input Meeting will be held on Thursday, September 10, 2009. This meeting will be held at Triangle Square, 1870 Harbor Boulevard, Suite A. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. The public is encouraged to attend.

AN EMAIL FROM MONTANA ON OBAMA'S STAGED EVENT
The CM PRESS received the following (everything below in italics) this morning and we pass it on as received:
Well folks, I just received the following via email from my cousin's wife. She sent it to all on her mail list. They live in Bozeman , Montana .. The only thing I've changed in the email is my cousin's name, for the sake of privacy. My cousin was a Navy pilot. He then flew commercial jets until his retirement. He still flies his own plane and is very involved with the airport operations near their home. He is one of the most patriotic people I know, AND both he and his wife hold themselves to the highest standards of integrity. The following email describes their experience at Obama's "town hall" meeting in Montana ....

By now you have probably heard that President Obama came to Montana last Friday. However, there are many things that the major news has not covered. I feel that since Joe and I live here and we were at the airport on Friday I should share some facts with you. Whatever you decide to do with the information is up to you. If you chose to share this email with others I do ask that you DELETE my email address before you forward this on..
On Wednesday, August 5th it was announced locally that the President would be coming here. There are many groups here that are against his healthcare and huge spending so those groups began talking and deciding on what they were going to do. The White House would not release ANY details other than the date.
On about Tuesday Joe found out that they would be holding the "Town Hall" at the airport. (This is only because Joe knows EVERYONE at the airport) Our airport is actually located outside of Belgrade (tiny town) in a very remote location. Nothing is around there. They chose to use a hangar that is the most remotely located hangar. You could not pick a more remote location, and you can not get to it easily. It is totally secluded from the public.
FYI: We have many areas in Belgrade and Bozeman which could have held a large amount of folks with sufficient parking. (gymnasiums/auditoriums). All of which have chairs and tables, and would not have to be SHIPPED IN!! $$$$$
During the week, cargo by the TONS was being shipped in constantly. Airport employees could not believe how it just kept coming. Though it was our President coming several expressed how excessive it was, especially during a recession. $$$$$
Late Tuesday/early Wednesday the 12th, they said that tickets would be handed out on Thursday 9am at two locations and the president would be arriving around 12:30 Friday.
Thursday morning about 600 tickets were passed out. However, 1500 were printed at a Local printing shop per White House request. Hmmmm.......900 tickets just DISAPPEARED.
This same morning someone called into the radio from the local UPS branch and said that THOUSANDS of Dollars of Lobster were shipped in for Obama. Montana has some of the best beef in the nation!!! And it would have been really wonderful to help out the local economy. Anyone heard of the Recession?? Just think...with all of the traveling the White House is doing. $$$$$ One can only imagine what else we are paying for.
On Friday Joe and I got out to the airport about 10:45am. The groups that wanted to protest Obama's spending and healthcare had gotten a permit to protest and that area was roped off. But that was not to be. A large bus carrying SEIU (Service Employees International Union) members drove up onto the area (illegal)and unloaded right there. It was quite a commotion and there were specifically 2 SEIU men trying to make trouble and start a fight. Police did get involved and arrested the one man but they said they did not have the manpower to remove the SEIU crowd.
The SEIU crowd was very organized and young. About 99% were under the age of 30 and they were not locals! They had bullhorns and PROFESSIONALLY made signs. Some even wore preprinted T-shirts. Oh, and Planned Parenthood folks were with them.....professing abortion rights with their T-shirts and preprinted signs. (BTW, all these folks did have a permit to protest in ANOTHER area)
Those against healthcare/spending moved away from the SEIU crowd to avoid confrontation. They were orderly and respectful. Even though SEIU kept coming over and walking through, continuing to be very intimidating and aggressive at the direction of the one SEIU man.
So we had Montana folks from ALL OVER the state with their homemade signs and their DOGS with homemade signs. We had cowboys, nurses, doctors you name it. There was even a guy from Texas who had been driving through. He found out about the occasion, went to the store, made a sign, and came to protest.
If you are wondering about the press.....Well, all of the major networks were over by that remote hangar I mentioned. They were conveniently parked on the other side of the buildings FAR away. None of these crowds were even visible to them. I have my doubts that they knew anything about the crowds.
We did have some local news media around us from this state and Idaho . Speaking of the local media...they were invited. However, all questions were to be turned into the White House in advance of the event. Wouldn't want anyone to have to think off the top of their head.
It was very obvious that it was meant to be totally controlled by the White House. Everything was orchestrated down to the last detail to make it appear that Montana is just crazy for Obama and government healthcare. Even those people that talked about their insurance woes........the White House called our local HRDC (Human Resource and Development Committee) and asked for names. Then the White House asked those folks to come. Smoke and mirrors...EVERYTHING was staged!!!!!!!!!!!
I am very dismayed about what I learned about our current White House. The amount of control and manipulation was unbelievable. I felt I was not living in the United States of America , more like the USSR !! I was physically nauseous. Joe and I have been around when Presidents or Heads of State visit.. It has NEVER been like this. I am truly very frightened for our country. America needs your prayers and your voices. If you care about our country please get involved. Know the issues. And let Congress hear your voices again and again!! If they are willing to put forth so much effort to BULLY a small town one can only imagine what is going on in Washington DC . Scary!!

AN EMAIL FROM MONTANA ON OBAMA'S STAGED EVENT
The CM PRESS received the following (everything below in italics) this morning and we pass it on as received:
Well folks, I just received the following via email from my cousin's wife. She sent it to all on her mail list. They live in Bozeman , Montana .. The only thing I've changed in the email is my cousin's name, for the sake of privacy. My cousin was a Navy pilot. He then flew commercial jets until his retirement. He still flies his own plane and is very involved with the airport operations near their home. He is one of the most patriotic people I know, AND both he and his wife hold themselves to the highest standards of integrity. The following email describes their experience at Obama's "town hall" meeting in Montana ....

By now you have probably heard that President Obama came to Montana last Friday. However, there are many things that the major news has not covered. I feel that since Joe and I live here and we were at the airport on Friday I should share some facts with you. Whatever you decide to do with the information is up to you. On Wednesday, August 5th it was announced locally that the President would be coming here. There are many groups here that are against his healthcare and huge spending so those groups began talking and deciding on what they were going to do. The White House would not release ANY details other than the date.
On about Tuesday Joe found out that they would be holding the "Town Hall" at the airport. (This is only because Joe knows EVERYONE at the airport) Our airport is actually located outside of Belgrade (tiny town) in a very remote location. Nothing is around there. They chose to use a hangar that is the most remotely located hangar. You could not pick a more remote location, and you can not get to it easily. It is totally secluded from the public.
FYI: We have many areas in Belgrade and Bozeman which could have held a large amount of folks with sufficient parking. (gymnasiums/auditoriums). All of which have chairs and tables, and would not have to be SHIPPED IN!! $$$$$
During the week, cargo by the TONS was being shipped in constantly. Airport employees could not believe how it just kept coming. Though it was our President coming several expressed how excessive it was, especially during a recession. $$$$$
Late Tuesday/early Wednesday the 12th, they said that tickets would be handed out on Thursday 9am at two locations and the president would be arriving around 12:30 Friday.
Thursday morning about 600 tickets were passed out. However, 1500 were printed at a Local printing shop per White House request. Hmmmm.......900 tickets just DISAPPEARED.
This same morning someone called into the radio from the local UPS branch and said that THOUSANDS of Dollars of Lobster were shipped in for Obama. Montana has some of the best beef in the nation!!! And it would have been really wonderful to help out the local economy. Anyone heard of the Recession?? Just think...with all of the traveling the White House is doing. $$$$$ One can only imagine what else we are paying for.
On Friday Joe and I got out to the airport about 10:45am. The groups that wanted to protest Obama's spending and healthcare had gotten a permit to protest and that area was roped off. But that was not to be. A large bus carrying SEIU (Service Employees International Union) members drove up onto the area (illegal)and unloaded right there. It was quite a commotion and there were specifically 2 SEIU men trying to make trouble and start a fight. Police did get involved and arrested the one man but they said they did not have the manpower to remove the SEIU crowd.
The SEIU crowd was very organized and young. About 99% were under the age of 30 and they were not locals! They had bullhorns and PROFESSIONALLY made signs. Some even wore preprinted T-shirts. Oh, and Planned Parenthood folks were with them.....professing abortion rights with their T-shirts and preprinted signs. (BTW, all these folks did have a permit to protest in ANOTHER area)
Those against healthcare/spending moved away from the SEIU crowd to avoid confrontation. They were orderly and respectful. Even though SEIU kept coming over and walking through, continuing to be very intimidating and aggressive at the direction of the one SEIU man.
So we had Montana folks from ALL OVER the state with their homemade signs and their DOGS with homemade signs. We had cowboys, nurses, doctors you name it. There was even a guy from Texas who had been driving through. He found out about the occasion, went to the store, made a sign, and came to protest.
If you are wondering about the press.....Well, all of the major networks were over by that remote hangar I mentioned. They were conveniently parked on the other side of the buildings FAR away. None of these crowds were even visible to them. I have my doubts that they knew anything about the crowds.
We did have some local news media around us from this state and Idaho . Speaking of the local media...they were invited. However, all questions were to be turned into the White House in advance of the event. Wouldn't want anyone to have to think off the top of their head.
It was very obvious that it was meant to be totally controlled by the White House. Everything was orchestrated down to the last detail to make it appear that Montana is just crazy for Obama and government healthcare. Even those people that talked about their insurance woes........the White House called our local HRDC (Human Resource and Development Committee) and asked for names. Then the White House asked those folks to come. Smoke and mirrors...EVERYTHING was staged!!!!!!!!!!!
I am very dismayed about what I learned about our current White House. The amount of control and manipulation was unbelievable. I felt I was not living in the United States of America , more like the USSR !! I was physically nauseous. Joe and I have been around when Presidents or Heads of State visit.. It has NEVER been like this. I am truly very frightened for our country. America needs your prayers and your voices. If you care about our country please get involved. Know the issues. And let Congress hear your voices again and again!! If they are willing to put forth so much effort to BULLY a small town one can only imagine what is going on in Washington DC . Scary!!

The CM PRESS recently made a public information request to the NMUSD for details on how many students the district has lost as a result of students not being able to prove they live in the district.
Here's the response we received from Laura Boss at the NMUSD:
Please find the attached spreadsheet with the enrollment #’s you requested relative to address verification. The attached chart reflects enrollment as of June 2009 and currently enrolled students as of August 10, 2009. All enrollees have gone through the address verification process which continues daily both at the school sites and at the Student Services office.
We are currently approximately 900 students below our enrollment from June 2009. This is due to a number of factors including the Davis transition, the addition of grade levels being added at Costa Mesa feeder schools, and the ongoing address verification process.

Too many naifs bought all the talk back in the '80's about how we could send all our factories to other countries and California would be one big garden populated by former factory workers who had retrained to be bankers, etc.
The reality is that wealth is created when you make or grow something. Middlemen, agents and paper pushers perform valuable functions, but all they're doing is taking a cut off what someone else made or grew. Remove the makers and growers from the equation and all you have left are the middlemen, agents and various paper pushers who will soon find themselves out of work.

The graffiti is not the problem. It is just a symptom of the problem. Without the Fillmore slum, Mesa North would be one of the nicest neighborhoods in Costa Mesa. With the Fillmore slum, it will never improve.

While Santa Ana continues moving to revitalize run down neighborhoods by using eminent domain, Costa Mesa continues with its free-market approach to the Westside. LINK
Costa Mesa's approach is right for our city (if done right), given the fact that the Westside is ocean close. This makes the present industrial land much more valuable for homes. However, the City Council has to understand that "free-market" doesn't mean that the local government should do nothing to prime the pump of change.
Indeed, the Council and the municipal government should be actively reaching out to small lot developers and coming up with creative incentives to get them to open their wallets in this down economy and take the risk of putting in some lofts and homes on the bluffs.
Of course, the Council and staff will tell you that they are reaching out. However, as far as we can
tell, their reaching out is anemic and not at all robust.
