The Costa Mesa Police Department is expanding its Front Desk hours to provide more access and availability to the community. For those individuals that may not be able to come to the Police Department during the week, the Front Desk will now be open on Saturdays from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. This change will take effect this Saturday, February 4, 2012. The Front Desk will remain closed on Sundays and all City observed holidays.

7:10--2/1/12--CMPD LOOKING FOR SUSPECT
[Following is from CMPD press release]

On 02-01-12, Officers were dispatched to the area of Tustin Avenue and 18th Street regarding suspicious activity involving 2 African American males in a red Volvo possibly selling drugs to the informant’s daughter.

The males immediately drove away in the Volvo and the informant followed them while relaying this information to the Costa Mesa Police Department. With the informant still following the vehicle, both males stopped the Volvo in front of Harper School at 425 E. 18th Street and fled on foot.

A record check revealed the Volvo was reported stolen from Costa Mesa on 01-19-12. Officers were immediately able to detain and arrest one of the males, identified as Adon Woodward.

A perimeter was set up for the second suspect and officers from the Newport Beach Police Department assisted with the search. The Huntington Beach Police helicopter also assisted with the search and provided periodic updates as well as announcements over their public address system.

The second suspect, identified as Anthony Thomas Guerrero, is currently outstanding. He is [Black] approximately 5-7, 160 pounds, last seen wearing a plaid shirt and green pants. If you see someone matching this description please contact the local police department.

Ms. Ahlf, in addition to being a frequent critic of the Good Councilmembers, is the mother of Karl Ahlf who ran unsuccessfully for the Costa Mesa City Council a few years ago.

We're not sure what upsets Ms. Ahlf about the Good Councilmembers, and just saying that the city is
"circling the drain," gives us absolutely no clues whatsoever.

Is she upset because the Good Councilmembers are improving the city and the quality of life of the residents?

Is she upset because the Good Councilmembers are right-sizing the government to save taxpayers money?

Is she upset because the Good Councilmembers want to take control of our city away from Sacramento and put it in the hands of Costa Mesans?

Perhaps Ms. Ahlf can enlighten us. Send us your comments Ms. Ahlf and if they have more than just meaningless catch phrases such as "circling the drain," we may publish them.

SUITS AT CITY HALL VOLUNTEER TO PAY MORE OF THEIR OWN RETIREMENT

The top leaders for the City of Costa Mesa have volunteered to pay 39% of their pension costs—the highest rate possible—saying they need to set the example of contributing their full retirement share to help insure the city’s finances are sustainable. The employee contribution will be one of the highest in California for public workers.

The move to increase pension contributions will affect eight city executives, including Chief Executive Officer Tom Hatch, Assist. Chief Executive Officer Rick Francis, Economic Development Director Peter Naghavi, Police Chief Tom Gazsi, Finance Director Bobby Young, interim Public Services Director Ernesto Munoz, and interim Development Services Director Khanh Nguyen.

Interim Fire Chief Tom Arnold is not paying into the retirement system and will be unaffected, but his successor will pay his or her full pension share.

The estimated annual taxpayer savings from the increase contributions, including the fire chief’s share, is more than $50,000.

Non-public safety executives are currently paying 31.49% their pension costs. The contribution increase will go into effect as soon as it’s approved by the City Council, likely at its Feb. 7 meeting.

Police Chief Gazsi currently pays 11.61% of his pension costs (as do other Costa Mesa police officers), with the City picking up the remaining 88.39%. Police officers are allowed to pick up 48.633% of the cost of their pensions. Gazsi and CEO Hatch are currently working on a plan to move the police chief toward this maximum contribution level.

It is not known if the rank and file police officers will agree to pay their fair share of their pension costs as the Chief is apparently going to do or whether they'll demand that citizens continue to pay 88.9% towards their retirement.

When hired, the new fire chief will immediately begin paying 49.32% of the cost of his or her pension, if the City Council approves the increase in employee contributions. Currently, the fire chief would be paying 12.92% of his pension costs, with the City would be picking up the remaining 87.08%).

Recently, due to an expired clause of a labor agreement, Costa Mesa firefighters (excluding battalion chiefs) dropped from paying 12.92% of their pension costs to paying 2.15%. The City now pays 97.85%. In real terms, the firefighters now pay $103,000 annually to their pensions, and the city pays $4.7 million.

In recent negotiations, the City has asked the firefighters to pay the 29.92% of their pension costs.

A question that remains in the minds of many citizens is whether or not Costa Mesa will outsource its fire fighting to the County if Costa Mesa firefighters balk at paying their fair share toward their own pensions.

ERIN BROCKOVICH ON THE CASE OVER TOURETTE'S SYNDROME

Last week a researcher said that he thought it was just a case of mass hysteria. We thought that was nonsense and we're pleased to see that others think there's an actual physical cause for the problem.

Brockovich thinks it might be related to a chemical spill. Our guess is that it may be caused by a virus or prions or even a mold.

LAGUNA HILLS OFFERS SOME TIPS FOR THE WESTSIDE OF COSTA MESA

The above linked story is probably boring to most folks, but anyone interested in how the real world works and how cities improve themselves, with public/private cooperation, might want to read the whole article.

A couple of things jumped out at us in the article as we think about improving the Westside: "[R]enovating existing shops in a California Coastal Style," and "upscale market."

For some reason, successive Costa Mesa Planning Commissions and City Councils have promoted the California Mission Style in our city. We think it's a mistake and we think it's dated and sleepy.

We think we need more modern California Coastal Style buildings with strong industrial elements--especially on the Westside, and we'd like to see this encouraged.

And as far as "upscale market" goes, that speaks for itself. But just in case it doesn't, think: "bees are attracted to honey."

MARINES SET UP A DEFENSIVE PERIMETER JUST LIKE THEY'RE TRAINED TO DO BUT WITH A SLIGHT TWIST

This is little-known story from the Pentagon on 09/11/2001:

During a visit with a fellow chaplain, who happened to be assigned
to the Pentagon, I had a chance to hear a first-hand account of an
incident that happened right after Flight 77 hit the Pentagon.

The chaplain told me what happened at a daycare center near where
the impact occurred. This daycare had many children, including infants who were in heavy cribs.

The daycare supervisor, looking at all the children they needed to evacuate, was in a panic over what they could do. There were many children, mostly toddlers, as well as the infants that would need to be taken out with the cribs.

There was no time to try to bundle them into carriers and strollers. Just then a young Marine came running into the center and asked what they needed. After hearing what the center director was trying to do, he ran back out into the hallway and disappeared.

The director thought, 'Well, here we are-on our own.'

About 2 minutes later, that Marine returned with 40 other Marines in tow. Each of them grabbed a crib with a child, and the rest started gathering up toddlers. The director and her staff then helped them take all the children out of the center and down toward the park near the Potomac and the Pentagon.

Once they got about 3/4 of a mile outside the building, the Marines stopped in the park, and then did a fabulous thing - they formed a circle with the cribs, which were quite sturdy and heavy, like the covered wagons in the Old West. Inside this circle of cribs, they put the toddlers, to keep them from wandering off.

Outside this circle were the 40 Marines, forming a perimeter around the children and waiting for instructions. There they remained until the parents could be notified and come get their children.

The chaplain then said, "I don't think any of us saw nor heard of this on any of the news stories of the day. It was an incredible story of our men there. There wasn't a dry eye in the room. The thought of those Marines and what they did and how fast they reacted; could we expect any less from them? It was one of the most
touching stories from the Pentagon."

Remember Ronald Reagan's great compliment: "Most of us wonder if our lives made any difference. Marines don't have that problem."

NO BRIDGE

The CM PRESS is strongly against a 19th Street bridge.

We've written about this before and laid out our reasoning, but given the fact that there are some who are still pushing for a bridge, we wanted to make it clear that we see no advantages to the Westside in having a bridge and many disadvantages.

Who is pushing for a bridge? Mainly those who believe it will lessen traffic on Victoria, Adams and PCH and will ensure that the Gisler Street bridge is never needed.

We understand their concerns, but given the particular circumstances surrounding the 19th Street area and the Westside Bluffs, we believe a 19th Street bridge will ruin any chances for the type of improvement in that area that is needed.

But, as we've written before, we always have an open mind and if anyone can make a persuasive argument that such a bridge would actually help the Westside, we'd be glad to listen.

Our goal is the same today as when we first proposed Westside Plans (we did that even before the various Westside Committees came up with similar plans a few years later): to improve the Westside and thus improve all of Costa Mesa.

Our view has always been that any area of our city that has too many functionally obsolete apartment buildings that act as breeding grounds for crime and social dysfunction, along with an overabundance of non-profits that help create and maintain a ghetto atmosphere, is a cancer on the rest of the city and will spread unless that cancer is removed.

Many people seem to have forgotten that the expensive studies that went into creating the three Westside Plans established the fact that large parts of the Westside legally qualified for redevelopment and eminent domain that would essentially scrape the land clean of what's there now and would allow for building a new Westside from the ground up.

That idea of scraping the land clean was rejected by the Committees working on the Westside Plans in favor of allowing the private sector to work closely with city government to bring in a more organic improvement that would be less jarring to citizens of Costa Mesa.

WHAT TOO MANY GOODY TWO SHOES MISS ABOUT HOMELESSNESS

"[He] liked the freedom of the streets...." That's a line in the above story about one of the guys who was murdered recently.

Our guess is if you ask the right questions of many homeless people, you'll get the same answer about freedom.

This is important because it seems as though many do-gooders think all the homeless people want to have homes. Some do. But many don't want a settled life. The problem is that some do-gooders lump all homeless people together as though they are people who want to live like settled people. In so thinking, the do-gooders often come up with the wrong solutions to what they consider a problem.

We're reminded of how in Europe many countries have for hundreds of years tried to "solve" the Gypsy problem [called Travellers in Ireland] by providing homes for Gypsies and by giving them ordinary jobs. Most Gypsies don't want the homes and trash them; and they don't like the ordinary jobs.

A similar world view is held by many homeless people.

What we have in America is a homeless sub-culture of people who have chosen a different life style--one that settled people might not find attractive, but which appeals to those who value their personal freedom--no mortgages, no bills, no demands on their time, and the company of others with a similar outlook. A better name for them might be New Hobos, New Gypsies or New Travellers.

Many of them are military vets who are alienated and who have a hard time readjusting to civilian life.

Whatever they're called, they're here to stay, and we should expect their numbers to rise as more and more troops leave military services.

NEWPORT COUNCILMEMBERS UNDER INVESTIGATION

Recently, the CM PRESS called on the Costa Mesa City Council to form a standing Westside Revitalization Committee, composed of ordinary citizens, to bring suggestions to the City Council.

Newport has its own versions of such a committee. The problem is that Newport has put a couple of its Councilmembers on their committees and now the FPPC is looking into whether they have a conflict of interest as they seem to have pushed for changes to areas where they own property.

Costa Mesa should avoid a similar situation, and it would if it formed the Westside Revitalization Committee as suggested by the CM PRESS. That is, no Councilmembers or Commissioners on the committee--just ordinary citizens.

Too many cops have political and social agendas (consider Costa Mesa) and use their positions to further those political and social agendas.

Before the last election in Costa Mesa there were rumors that some in the CMPD may have been using GPS devices to follow some candidates who wanted to curtail the unions from electing puppets to the City Council. This was never confirmed, but it was confirmed that at least one CMPD cop used such a device to track an ex-girlfriend.

There are also rumors that some in the CMPD may have links to some so-called anti-hate organizations that also have political and social agendas.

You may recall that a San Francisco cop was found to be giving out confidential information to one of these so-called anti-hate organizations and that the cop fled the country when he was discovered.

Then there was the stink-eye incident in Costa Mesa; we don't think the results of the investigation were ever made completely public but it sure looked as though the CMPD was trying to intimidate citizens and even one sitting City Councilmember before the last election.

Ms. Eleanor's latest fear of a secret plot to take over Costa Mesa is that the City Council will sneak in a qualification requiring anyone who runs for City Council to have served on the Planning Commission or the Parks and Recreation Commission--sort of a modern version of the old requirement that only landowners can vote and hold office or only men can vote.

See, the problem--at least in Ms. Eleanor's mind--is that since the City Council appoints all the people to the Planning Commission and the Parks and Recreation Commission, that those dastardly good Councilmembers will put their friends on those two commissions and then these friends will be the only ones who can run for the Council and when they get elected, these former Commissioners will appoint the now out of office Councilmembers to the Planning Commission and the Parks and Recreation Commission and then in a perpetual game of switching seats, these new Commissioners who were formerly City Councilmembers will run for the Council again and then they'll appoint the former Commissioners who are now Councilmembers back to the Commissions and then....

No, we're not kidding. That's Ms. Eleanor's latest concern. Does she offer examples of any cities where this happens? Of course not. Why? Because it's just silly.

Well, anyway, perhaps the Council should simply tighten up the language a little to give Ms. Eleanor some rest. She must be wearing her fingers to the bone typing all these silly letters and columns against the good Councilmembers.

THREE WESTSIDE PLANS ARE NOW EASIER TO FIND ON THE CITY'S WEBSITE

These plans are a great road map for improving the Westside.

If you don't have the time or desire to read them all, here's the most important thing to remember: The Westside Plans make it far easier for the private sector to make changes on the Westside and they offer attractive incentives to those who take the financial risk to pioneer such changes.

In addition to the above, there are things discussed in the plans, or which flow from things discussed in the plans, that the City can do relatively inexpensively--right now, today--to improve the vibes on the Westside to make it more attractive for upwardly mobile people to buy homes and start businesses there.

Hopefully, developers, upwardly mobile people looking for homes, and various business people will take the time to read the plans.

And, even more hopefully, City Hall will assign an agressive person to act as an ombudsman who knows his or her way around City Hall and who can grease the rails of those wanting to invest money or their future on the Westside.

REBRANDING THE WESTSIDE AND SELF CLEANING OVENS

We've gotten assurances from those in the know that we should soon see proper signage at 19th and Harbor indicating that one is entering "19 WEST."

This will be a small but significant step toward rebranding the Westside as an area that is open for business.

As you may recall, the CM PRESS reminded the City Council about putting up such a sign a couple of City Council meetings ago and then we went back to the most recent meeting to remind them again. If there is no sign up before the next meeting, we'll be back.

Actually, we may be back anyway with some more suggestions for low cost things that can be done right now to spur improvement on the Westside.

Forget about waiting for the economy to turn around to do anything. That's like saying I like steak but I can only afford hamburger so I'm not going to eat until the price of steak comes down.

We also suggested that the Council start a standing committee to oversee improvements on the Westside and to help remind the Council of things that can be done. However, so far, this seems to have fallen on deaf ears. So, if the City doesn't do this, you may see the CM PRESS trying to wake up all the Westside activists who were so active a few year ago.

Here's the thing about the CM PRESS's actions on the Westside. We don't live there. We have no financial interest in anything that happens there. This means our actions, as they have been since 1999, can't be challenged by those who will say that we have some financial interest or motive in the area and that's the only reason we're trying to get it improved.

So, what is our motive? It's simple. We believe that the Westside is the key to improving all of Costa Mesa. Period. Fix the Westside and you fix all of Costa Mesa. Leave the Westside to rot, and you harm all of Costa Mesa.

Most other neighborhoods in Costa Mesa don't need the special care that the Westside needs. These other neighborhoods pretty much work like self cleaning ovens, but the Westside needs some hands on help until we get the self cleaning oven installed over there.

Folks, if Whites attack people of another race/ethnicity, the establishment makes a big deal about it, but when non-Whites attack Whites (which is far more frequent) the establishment tries to cover up the race/ethnicity angle.

Why should you be aware of the race/ethnicity of the attackers and victims? It helps you stay informed so you can play the odds and reduce your risk of being a victim.

If it's blond Swedes attacking people, you should also be informed of that; but that's not the case, is it?

COSTA MESA TAXPAYERS ASSOCIATION STRIKES a BLOW FOR A FREE COSTA MESA TOMORROW

The know-nothings and assorted cranks have been doing their mouth breathing at recent City Council meetings as they spew their hate at the good Councilmembers, but tomorrow night the Costa Mesa Taxpayers Association enters the fray to help set the record straight.

Here's the info (slightly edited by CM PRESS) from Colin McCarthy who heads the group:

CMTax meeting on Thursday January 19th at 6:00 p.m. at the Neighborhood Community Center (adjacent to Lion’s Park). The meeting is free and open to the public.

In addition to hearing from our Assemblyman, Hon. Allan Mansoor, about the Stop Special Interest Money Campaign which will appear on the November ballot, we are hosting a critical panel discussion of Costa Mesa’s Charter City proposal. Our panelists include Costa Mesa Mayor Pro Tem Jim Righeimer, key proponent of the Charter proposal, Costa Mesa Councilmember Steve Mensinger, who will explain his position, and Oceanside City Councilmember Jerry Kern.

So why did we invite a Councilmember from the City of Oceanside to a Costa Mesa meeting? Oceanside voters recently approved a Charter proposal for their City. Measure “K” passed in June 2010 by a 54% to 46% margin despite significant and expensive opposition by organized labor. Mr. Kern was part of the battle to return Oceanside back to its residents by approving their Charter. Oceanside’s Charter is very similar to the Charter being proposed in Costa Mesa.

A number of you have contacted me inquiring about the proposed Charter and questioning not the substance of the document itself, but the process. I have yet to hear from a single CMTax member opposed to the draft Charter. However, some of you are wondering why the City is pursuing the Charter so quickly and in the June primary election as opposed to the November general election.

At first glance, the process can appear to be expedited. However, upon closer review that is not the case. The Charter idea was brought forward in early December. There have already been several public hearings on the Charter with several more to come. If it is approved to go before voters, that approval will not come until March, with an additional three months of education and outreach after that. All told, Costa Mesa voters will have six months from beginning to end to vet and consider the Charter before voting on it.

If the Charter was postponed until the November election it would have to compete with a litany of proposed Statewide ballot measures, including several anticipated measures to raise taxes. Add in a Presidential, U.S. Senate and Congressional race, State and local races, and it’s easy to see how the Charter would get lost in the mix. With a June election, the Charter will be the only measure on the ballot and will get its own top-billing and due consideration by the voters. In fact, most other cities that have enacted Charters (including Oceanside) have voted on the Charter in the June primary election.

Sadly, opponents of the Charter are utilizing this schedule to defeat it. They are not attacking the merits of Costa Mesa becoming a Charter City, but instead are saying that this schedule is essentially a power-grab by our fiscally conservative City Council. In fact, just this past weekend [some people] were out leafleting neighborhoods trying to drum-up opposition to the Charter even before it has been finalized or placed on the ballot! The Unions stand to lose if Costa Mesa divorces itself from Sacramento politicians and they will stop at nothing to prevent us from taking back our City.

I have not totally made up my mind on the proposed Charter, however, and I look forward to hearing more about the proposal from Mayor Pro Tem Righeimer and the City during our robust discussion about the merits of the Charter at our meeting on January 19th (invitation attached). FAST READ AND THE CM PRESS'S MAIN POINT:

The draft charter is only seven pages long and should be easily understood by your average sixth grader. It is not a power grab and mostly keeps the same type of government that we have now, but just takes some power away from Sacramento and gives it to the citizens of Costa Mesa.

VERBOSE VERSION:

Just prior to the start of last night's City Council meeting, Tamar Goldmann, a frequent critic of the good Councilmembers, threaded her way through the rows of seats handing out a yellow flyer to anyone who would accept it. Goldmann got near us but avoided giving us a flyer. However, some kids who did get the flyer and who didn't want it gave us one.

The yellow flyer seems to be Ms. Goldmann's attempt to justify and explain a green flyer handed out prior to the January 10th City Council meeting that Councilmember Mensinger took to task in such a way that Ms. Goldmann apparently took his comments as a personal attack on her.

In the yellow flyer (the one handed out last night), Ms. Goldmann says she didn't write the green flyer but did help distribute it and that she does agree with what it says. But, ah, she did write the yellow flyer and is also distributing it.

With us so far? Yeah, we know, yellow, green, this meeting, that meeting, didn't write that one but did distribute it, did write this one and is distributing it. Yawn.

Anyway, we wanted to give you a little of the flavor of things these days.

Now, to the substance.

The Green Flyer (January 10th City Council meeting)

The green flyer says it was prepared by Costa Mesans for Responsible Government and its headline is STOP THE POWER GRAB! It urges residents to attend the January 10th City Council meeting. This is apparently the leaflet that was dropped on doorsteps, and which was mentioned by the Robin Lefflers in the Daily Pilot, that we wrote about before.

Here's how it starts off: "Four guys on the City Council, a pub owner, a developer, a real estate 'consultant', and an antique dealer, decided to junk the system of general laws governing our city and make up their own rules in a HASTILY prepared city charter."

Oh no! Not a pub owner, a developer, a real estate 'consultant,' and an antique dealer! We're doomed. Head for the hills.

But wait a minute. Folks, all the City Council members have regular jobs. They always have. That's the idea: have regular citizens as Councilmembers. It's called democracy. It's called elect the people who are your neighbors to the Council because they're living under the same conditions as you and thus may be more responsive to the needs of the ordinary citizens of the city.

But, look, you're supposed to believe that a pub owner, a developer, a real estate 'consulant,' and an antique dealer don't have the brainpower to write a draft charter. Isn't that the real intent of telling you their jobs?

However, didn't the flyer say the pub owner, et al. had cut and pasted the draft charter?

So, the butcher, the baker and the candlestick maker, er, you know what we mean, were bright enough to look at other charters and take the things from those charters prepared by citizen committees and polished by presumably high paid lawyers, and put them in Costa Mesa's draft charter which was also polished by Costa Mesa's City Attorney. That's the right way to do things. Why start from scratch? Why try to reinvent the wheel?

For our part, we're all for the charter and we're all for having the Council do its job and take the initiative on such things as they are now doing by coming up with a time saving and efficient way of presenting a draft charter to the citizens of Costa Mesa.

We could go on, and maybe we will later, but we'll leave it at this for now.

Watch how some of them speak. Watch their facial tics. Listen as they ramble and make no sense.

And, watch as Goslow Wendy, up on the dais, slowly screws up her face in great concern for anything the nuts say as though what they're saying is important and how she really, really is taking their comments to heart...but very, very slowly.

The curtain rises at 6:00 PM.

TWO SHOT IN SAN CLEMENTE

This happened yesterday and follows the attack by Latinos on a couple of young White guys--one is in a coma after being hit in the head with a brick--that we reported on earlier.

Conflicting reports on this shooting. First reports were that two Whites had been shot by Latinos. Now there are reports that a man with a White name has been arrested as one of the shooters and some are speculating that this shooting was a payback for the attack on the two Whites earlier in the week.

If we get additional information, we'll let you know.

[UPDATE: Rumors now are that the attack was by Latinos on Whites, and that the man with a White name was with the Whites who were shot and was arrested for carrying a gun. No information as to whether he fired his weapon at the Latino shooters. None of this has been confirmed.]

The subconscious thinking of those saying this is often: "We're Good aracial White people and we don't think of ourselves as White. You should listen to us and you shouldn't think of yourself as Black (or Asian or Latino or whatever) and just be aracial, but, ah, be sure to act aracially White just like us."

O.C. WHITE CHAMBER BEHIND FILM ABOUT A GREAT WHITE LEADER

The Good Whites, reading the above, probably dropped their lattes as they rushed to call the O.C. Human Relations Commission and write letters to the newspapers saying they're against hate and how they don't notice skin color and how they're organizing a candlelight walk to show their solidarity with non-Whites.

The gushy attaboy article linked to in the OC REGISTER is about the O.C. Black Chamber of Commerce.

"Whew," say the Good Whites. "We just love that those people have their own chamber of commerce and of course there should not be a White chamber of commerce. That would be racist and White supremacist. Can't have Whites organizing as Whites for anything."

So here we are, dear readers, in our present anti-White Dark Age in which every group that Whites belong to must look like the United Nations to show that Whites have no sense of who and what they are and won't work to help their own people.

Anyway, the Robins say that "we" put out 9,000 leaflets last weekend concerning the charter.

You know folks, we Martins at the CM PRESSES have always believed that government that is closest to the people is the best government. What do the many politicians in Sacramento whose districts are hundreds of miles away from Costa Mesa, and who probably don't even know where Costa Mesa is located, know about running our particular city?

Didn't the Goslow Wendys--the Godmothers of the malcontents and obstructionists--gush that Costa Mesa is "unique"? If so, then wouldn't it be better for us to govern ourselves?

Lack of self-esteem behind some of the hate?

Something else has occurred to us concerning the hatred that some seem to aim mostly at the Jim Righeimers and the Steve Mensingers that we think might be pathological.

Certainly, it seems that the attacks against the Jims and the Steves come after virtually anything either of these two do or say. If you doubt this, just check the comments in the Daily Pilots following the most innocuous things from these guys and you'll see hatred falling off the page from the mostly anonymous commenters.

If the Jims or the Steves say that the day is going to be sunny, the haters will whine. If they say that the day isn't going to be sunny, the haters will whine. You see what's really going on here, don't you? It's personal hatred in some cases.

Why? What is the psychological basis for such personal hatred?

Well, here's one possible explanation. We've heard similar hatred aimed at the Rush Limbaughs, coming from people who we know and who we know have low self-esteem.

We've actually probed some of these people a little to get to what really bugs them about the Rushes. The cover explanations often involved politics, but then when we dug deeper we got to things such as: "He's too full of himself." "He's too assertive." "He's too sure of himself." "He thinks he's better than others."

And most, but not all, of the comments like this come from women---who are apparently threatened by men who are assertive and sure of themselves.  Could some of this be going on with some of the haters of the Jims and the Steves? Maybe.

They are? Which voters, Ms. Eleanor? Which ones?

Can it be, Ms. Eleanor, that you've just made this up as an easily knocked down straw man that you use as a segue into more negative comments about the charter--which, of course, isn't your real target at all, is it Ms. Eleanor? No, you are really out to knock the good Councilmembers and you're using the charter as your latest attaque au fer, are you not?

But even if you did hear someone say what you claim "some Costa Mesa voters" believe, so what? Costa Mesa voters can be found who have all sorts of odd ideas, but most people don't think it's necessary to pen a column for every nutty idea that is out there--unless of course, as we indicated above--we want to use the nutty ideas as a lead in for another attack on the good Councilmembers.

A POLITICAL ERROR OF THE COSTA MESA CITY COUNCIL

Costa Mesa City Councilmembers don't get many opportunities to bring supporters into government with them.

For this reason, the Councilmembers should choose wisely and not waste a single opportunity. Their next election chances may hinge on bringing the right people in with them. Read on.

The only paid people the Council can directly appoint are five people to the Planning Commission and five people to the Parks and Recreation Commission. Ten people. (10) These ten should be the main line of support.

The Council can also appoint friends and supporters to the unpaid committees, but these are much less important appointments. Perhaps sixty people. (60)

Lastly, the Council can set the tone so the ~~City Manager~~ CEO might choose to hire people who are friendly to the sitting Council. (Just a few people).

All of the above appointments and hirings are important, especially if a Council, like the present one, is activist and brings in major changes to the way the city is governed.

With changes comes controversy and opposition and with major changes comes major controversy and major opposition.

When there is controversy and opposition, the Council needs stand-up people to counter the controversy and opposition.

The Council needs family, friends and supporters to go to City Council meetings. It needs family, friends and supporters to write letters to the newspapers.

It needs family, friends and supporters to stand up and support the Council and its actions and to talk to other friends and neighbors.

But, the Council is just five members, and in our present case, there are only four Councilmembers who are bringing in the changes.

How many family members, friends and supporters of these four are we hearing from?

Where are they? They're certainly not filling the City Council chambers. They're not making many comments in the Daily Pilot. Where are they? Don't tell us that they're the silent majority. Don't tell us they're too busy working.

Where are the 5 Planning Commissioners, their family members,their friends, their supporters and those they influence?

Where are the 5 Parks and Recreation Commissioners, their family members, their friends, their supporters and those they influence?

Where are the 60 or so Committee members, their family members, their friends and their supporters and those they influence?

Where are the highly paid executives hired by the City; perhaps with some influence by the Council? Where are their family members, their friends, their supporters and those they influence? Well, in this last case, we can answer that some of these highly paid executives don't even live in Costa Mesa, so they have no interest in standing up for the Council. And, yes, we know they mostly have to appear to be apolitical, so we'll speak no more of them here.

The Council members can suggest to their own families, that they should support the Council, but they really can't demand that the Commissioners and the Committee members do so. This is something that these people must choose to do or not do all on their own. That's why the Council has to choose wisely.

Are we seeing many stand-up types among the people brought into government by the present Council?

Not really. There are a couple of people who stand up--a couple on the Commissions, maybe a few on the committees, but most aren't doing anything. Most are just sitting on their hands. They just aren't showing up or doing anything meaningful.

Politically speaking, the Council has wasted a lot of opportunities to build support by making poor appointments, and it shows at every City Council meeting lately and in comments in the newspapers.

Except for a few exceptions, the Council has not appointed the A team to help make the changes that the Council wants to make and to win election this year.

If I had the ears of the Councilmembers, I'd tell them they need to take some corrective action.

Said that religious institutions--not the government--can decide who can be hired and fired to do the religious work of the institutions. This ruling reinforces the ministerial exception to civil rights laws.

Ms. Eleanor spoke against the charter last night and got into the Daily Pilot today with her brilliant quote that the seven page charter has "[M]ore holes than Swiss cheese with a mouse in it." Now, wasn't that a brilliant and funny thing to say?

THIS IS ROBIN LEFFLER

The Robins are a frequent critic of the good Councilmembers.

Lately, why as late as last night, in fact, the Robins seem to have become obsessed with Jim Righeimer's sometimes use of the "royal we" when the Jims speak of actions that the Council or City may take.

The Robins hears that "we" and figures that the Jims must be speaking to other people, by golly, and if those other people (squint eyes suspiciously here) are on the City Council, the Robins want to know if there's a Brown Act violation.

Gee, Robins, we CM PRESSES often use the " royal we" also, but we don't really mean we as more than one. We use it as a literary device.

But the real issue with the Robins appears to be their dislike for the Jims rather than the issue of the charter. If not, what are we to make of this quote in the Daily Pilot from the Robins: "We're not saying no to a charter. We're saying no to a Righeimer charter."

Ah, Robins, who is the "we're" in your above quote? How many of you Robins are there?

SLOW READERS AT CITY COUNCIL MEETING LAST NIGHT

Jim Righeimer has come up with a seven page draft charter for the city that is based on charters that work for other cities.

Seven pages. 1, 2, 3,4, 5, 6, 7. Seven. 7. One more than six. One less than eight. Not nine. Not ten. Seven. Five fingers on one hand, plus two on the other. Not even two complete hands.

This plainly worded seven page draft charter (with no big words)pretty much keeps everything the same as it is now in the city, but gives local control to the citizens of Costa Mesa instead of letting politicians in Sacramento decide what is right for us.

But at last night's City Council meeting, the usual characters trooped to the podium to tell the Council that the Council should slow down because many people don't understand the charter and need time to understand it.

Don't understand? It's only seven pages long. How long does it take some of these people to read seven pages and understand what is there?

Others said that many in the public haven't even heard of the charter.

Folks, if you've followed civic affairs in this or any other city, you know that there will always be people who can't understand simple English written on just a few pages.

You also know that the City could put information about the charter on billboards on every busy street in the city, on banners behind planes, in letters to every house in the city, and do all of these things and more for ten years, and there would still be people who would say slow down we don't understand, and others who would say that they've never heard of the charter. And, I don't mean this figuratively.

But the truth behind this slow reading and slow thinking herd is just lefty politics and human frailty.

Many of the people who spoke last night are the same lefties, exhibitionists and haters who speak at almost every City Council meeting.

The lefties are driven by the unions and want to keep feathering the nests of the union employees by electing puppets to the City Council this year who will rob from citizens to pay employees who don't even live in this city.

The exhibitionists just want to put meaning in their otherwise meaningless lives by getting a shot of dopamine from their exhibitionism.

The haters just hate change, or their own lives, or conservatives, or Republicans, or Righeimer, Mensinger, Bever and Monahan.

We imagine the inner thoughts of some of the people who spoke...

"HEY, LOOK AT ME! PLEASE! EVERYBODY LOOK AT ME! I AM SOMEBODY! I'm standing up here and I don't know what the hell I'm talking about, because I don't have an original thought in my tiny brain, but I think I'm pretty much mirroring the mood of the majority of the lefties, other exhibitionists and haters who are here tonight, so applaud me when I finish. I need that applause. Smile at me also. I need that. Give me your nods of approval. Your attaboys. Then, I'll feel really good about myself. SUGGESTION TO CITY COUNCIL: FORMATION OF A WESTSIDE REVITALIZATION COMMITTEE

The CM PRESS is calling upon the City Council to start a standing Westside Revitalization Committee that will be charged with the specific task of studying the Westside Plans and finding ways that "small" inexpensive parts of the plans--or implied elements of the plans, that may be deduced from a fair reading of the plans--may be undertaken, and in then making recommendations to the City Council for implementation.

Why is such a committee needed?

Here's an example. The City Council adopted the Westside Plans in 2005. This is 2012, and no one bothered to even think about putting up a "19 West" sign on West 19th Street as recommended in the plans until the CM PRESS brought this to the attention of the City Council recently.

Talk about going slow. Good grief.

There are other things that can be done to give the area a new vitality and an identity that will help the area improve without too much expense--it would be the purpose of the committee to ferret out these inexpensive, mostly aesthetic, items and bring them to the attention of the Council.

Please, City Council, if you decide to form such a committee, don't appoint any seat warmers or goslow people who just like to flap their lips. Appoint doers. Appoint people who are used to taking action. Appoint people who make things happen. Appoint people who will drive the changes we need.

NO-PLANNING PLANNING COMMISSION MEETING TONIGHT

Yawn.

There is one person on this five person commission who is dead wood and who shouldn't be there. He knows nothing. He does nothing. He has no original ideas. He might as well be living in Kansas--that's how uninvolved he is in the life of this city and its genuine improvement.

There's also a second person on the commission who is ineffective and who should be replaced.

And, there's a third who is simply going through the motions and who should be replaced.

So, there you have it. A five person commission and in our opinion three of the people there should be replaced.

Who's to blame for them being there? The City Council.

Running a city like a business is something the CM PRESS is in favor of doing. But, it should be more than just a slogan, and our board of directors (the City Council) needs to put the right people in the right spots to make things work properly. The board of directors also has to replace people when they don't work out.

We don't need any more goslow Wendyites in government at any level.

Remember Wendy telling us that we have the best employees [in the state or country or world or universe, or whatever] and that our employees are part of our family?

Well, now she's back with more of this childish twaddle in her above linked blog column about the 19th Street bridge and the charter.

Wendy writes, "[W]e Costa Mesans are up for it!" [Getting the bridge off of MPAH.] Yeah, damn right, that's because we're special. Somehow, living in Costa Mesa has made us this way. We ain't like them Newporters or Huntington Beachers or them there Fountain Valleyers. No, by golly, we're Costa Mesans! Be true to your ~~school~~ city!

Then, Wendy writes: "Costa Mesa is a very unique city." It is? Why and how is it unique? Wendy doesn't tell us that. Sometimes you just have to have belief.

She goes on about the charter, "We should not be copying and pasting from other cities! Makes us look dumb! We aren't!"
No, Wendy, you writing that makes you look dumb. No laws or constitutions or legal documents are made of whole cloth. They all build on what's already been done successfully. It is supremely dumb to not cut and paste and instead try to reinvent the wheel.

BTW all those exclamation points are Wendy's! (except this one, which is mine)

Goslow Wendy brags that she lives on the Westside. Yes, it's true, at least geographically,but she lives in a gated insular community that, as we've said before, might as well be in Beverly Hills.

And, what has Wendy done to improve the Westside while she's been in office? Nothing. In fact, her constant schmoozing with the charities just helps keep the area downscale.

The Westside Plans were finished more than five years ago. Where have they been? Gathering dust. Why hasn't Wendy been doing something with them? The heavy thinking has already been done. They just need to be implemented, and this takes will on the part of the City Council.

In fact, the only reason that the Westside Plans are now finally being dusted off and the only reason that the sign for "19 West" is finally going to go up on W. 19th Street is because the CM PRESS reminded the good Councilmembers about the plans and the sign, and they are now taking action. And, I don't even live on the Westside. Bever lives on the Westside but way up in the north part so he probably doesn't notice the absence of the sign. Wendy, however, probably drives by 19th and Harbor (where the sign will go) a couple of times a day. What's Wendy been doing? Oh right, she's been busy going slow and trying to curry favor with local lefties.

If you start seeing some improvements on the Westside you can mainly thank Jim Righeimer, Steve Mensinger, Eric Bever and Gary Monahan. Give no thanks to Wendy. She's done nothing. She's just too slow. In fact, she even indicates how slow she is in her above column. She's a slow thinker. A slow reader. A slow talker. A slow doer. Goslow Wendy is our new name for her (until we think of a better one).

SANDY GENIS WANTS THE CITY TO SLOW DOWN AND REINVENT THE WHEEL
In her above column in the DAILY PILOT, Sandy Genis tells readers how she once served on a Charter Commission and they took nine months to come up with a charter.

She also wants Costa Mesa to slow down concerning the charter.

Why? The work on studying charters has already been done--Genis spent months doing some slow thinking on the subject--so why reinvent the wheel?

Is Costa Mesa so different from other cities that have charters that we now have to start from scratch in order to listen to the usual assortment of lefty kooks who show up at City Council meetings to waste our time with their screwball ideas that will not be accepted?

The City should proceed with the draft proposal and take input as it is presently doing. It's a good framework.

THE 19TH STREET BRIDGE MEETING LAST NIGHT--THE BRIDGE LOST THE BATTLE, BUT MAYBE NOT THE WAR...YET

Huntington Beach's Eader Elementary School's auditorium was jam packed to 3 and 4 deep standing room only and there were a couple of hundred people who couldn't squeeze in who stood outside trying to listen at the door.

Our guess is that nearly 100 % of the people there were against the bridge in any shape or form.

The battle to build a bridge now is basically over and the bridge lost.

But, The Bridge War Isn't Over

The bridge war isn't over yet because if the proposed bridge remains conceptually on the Master Plan of Arterial Highways (MPAH), developers can use the mere mention that it is still on the MPAH to over-develop now--as though the bridge is actually there--and add thousands of vehicle trips now.

The result of this fictional bridge but real cars will be that the traffic will increase to such a level that intersections will fail and then a couple of years from now there will be another push to put in a bridge.

The argument then will be: "Gee, you let us add all this traffic a few years ago because of the fictional bridge on the MPAH. Now, we need the actual physical manifestation of that fictional bridge to relieve the traffic and help our residents have free flowing streets."

So, in order for the bridge war to be won, mention of the bridge MUST be removed from the MPAH.

Remember the above as we get more into the election this year.

If a politician says he or she is against the bridge (and any local politician who is half-smart who doesn't say that, may not get elected), don't get all gushy. Ask them if they are for removing mention of the bridge from the MPAH.

That's the real test: removal of every mention of the bridge from MPAH.

And, that's where the problem lies, because Newport Beach can refuse to let mention of the bridge be removed from the MPAH.

Our position...

NO BRIDGE!

Back when the Improvers were just getting started in trying to improve the Westside, the CM PRESS was against the 19th Street Bridge and we often spoke before the City Council every time one particular resident of Mesa Verde would call for the bridge (which was at almost every City Council meeting). We were usually the lone voice speaking against the bridge.

Our way of coming to our NO BRIDGE decision was based on the way we come to every decision. That is, every action we take in life is either good, neutral, or bad.

And, in the context of the Westside, good means the area is improved, neutral means nothing changes, and bad means it will make the Westside worse.

But back then, before we came to the NO BRIDGE position, we briefly thought that a bridge and increased traffic on 19th Street, and especially west of Placentia, might make the street more attractive to a major supermarket along with some up scale retailers.

In fact, such increased traffic might, indeed, attract the attention of such a supermarket and retailers, but on closer look, the site selectors for supermarkets and top retailers might realize, as we did, that the traffic is not good traffic. It is not going to be primarily Costa Mesa traffic with cars full of Costa MENSANS (oops), going to their local stores. The traffic would be fast moving commuter and beach traffic just cutting through Costa Mesa.

In addition, given the fact that most of the lots on W. 19th Street are very small and shallow, a developer would have to find a way to deepen those lots and assemble many of them to accommodate the footprint for a major supermarket and its surrounding stores. The only way to do that would be to use eminent domain and remove residential units that back up to the present commercial lots on W. 19th Street. And, that's not going to happen.

Now, even though we are against the bridge, we still, as always and on every subject, have an open mind and if anyone can convince us that our logic as briefly outlined above is wrong, we might reconsider. But, we don't see that happening.

SCIENTISTS 'CREATE' SUPER SOLDIER ANTS BY REACTIVATING ANCIENT DORMANT GENES

The real story here is the one indicated by the CM PRESS headline above, and not the one in the linked column.

Scientists didn't create something new; the genes for these characteristics were dormant within the ants themselves. The scientists just found a way to have these genes expressed.

If we assume, just for experimental purposes, that the large head genes became dormant because they didn't offer a survival advantage in the past, and that they were replaced with small head genes, then it would be interesting to use some of these big head ants in an experiment in a controlled environment where equal numbers of big head ants and small head ants are let loose to see how natural selection works itself out.

Will the big head ants become extinct again?

The good news is that he's been made Costa Mesa's first Economic Development Director.

The bad news is that the Improvers will now be closely watching him to make sure some of that economic development happens on the Westside.

And, if there is no economic development on the Westside, the ears of the City Council members and Mr. Hatch are going to be bent sideways with complaints.

We don't want to hear gushy tales of economic development in the South Coast Plaza area--that area can take care of itself. We want to hear about economic development that will transform the Westside.

For starters, we'd like to see that "19 WEST" sign get installed in the middle of W. 19th Street, post haste.

GEOFF WEST--As he did at an earlier meeting, West yelled a greeting to us from across the room last night in what sounded to us like a strangulated pre-pubescent voice. [Well, that is how it sounded to us. Maybe he has a cold.] We do wonder, however, if there's some connection between our perception of his voice and the fact that he always seems to be on the verge of hysteria--think Chicken Little--over any changes being made by the good Councilmembers. As usual, this guy didn't speak at the podium. He prefers to hide behind his computer and complain about everything the good Councilmembers do. We think he wants to be our pal. But, he seems to have a problem over the fact that we're in MENSA.* This is something that we don't usually mention, but we did mention it a few times years ago in some toss away context or other. Nevertheless, West seems to have internalized this. Funny, of all the thousands of words we've written, he seems to have most remembered and fixated on MENSA. Say, West, geez, we don't want to set you off, but did we ever send you that newspaper photo of us when we were on the genius GE COLLEGE BOWL TV Show? [CM PRESS stock photo]

* All ribbing of West aside, we don't mention it much because we don't believe standardized I.Q. tests are really reporting what is claimed, and we also believe there are several types of I.Q. And, most importantly, we think we're pretty dumb, and we'll be the first to tell you that. If we have been mistaken for being intelligent it's because we read a lot and seem to remember odd trivial things such as DeLaval invented the rocket nozzle or Bucephalus was the name of Alexander the Great's horse. Jay Humphrey

JAY HUMPHREY--This guy used to be on the City Council several years ago and now he's a frequent critic of the good Councilmembers who are straightening out the city from the screw ups of past Councils.

Last night, Humphrey whined because Colin McCarthy had written a piece in the Daily Pilot that pointed out that Perry Valentine, a former city employee, gets a nice pension, and that Valentine now always seems to be critical of the good Councilmembers and their attempts to get pension costs under control. It sounded to us as though Humphrey was calling for the Council to somehow stop McCarthy's free speech rights.

Perry Valentine

PERRY VALENTINE--This is the guy mentioned above who used to work for the city but who is now retired and who gets a nice pension.
At last night's meeting, Valentine suggested that columns appearing in the Daily Pilot under the names of some of the good Councilmembers may actually be ghost written, and Valentine, by golly, doesn't want his tax money going to a ghost writer. At a previous meeting, Valentine absurdly requested that Councilmember Steve Mensinger recuse himself from a youth sports matter because Mensinger and Mensinger's wife are active in youth sports and have been for many years. The CM PRESS then went to the podium at that earlier meeting and pointed out how silly this recusal request was and how citizens of Costa Mesa should want our politicians to be involved in the life of this city, and that if Mensinger were to recuse himself from all his volunteer work in the city that he'd be recused most of the time. DON'T GORE MY OX, GORE HIS OR HERS INSTEAD

Good morning, boys and girls. A new play--called The Prospect of The 19th Street Bridge--is unfolding before our eyes on the proscenium stage that is Costa Mesa.

Let's talk a little about this play and some of the characters, along with what might be their motives.

You do know that people have motives for their actions, don't you boys and girls?

Entering stage left is Eleanor Egan, let's call her Ms. Eleanor, who is the wife of Mr. Tom, who we wrote about recently after Mr. Tom penned a rambling, bizarro, book length column about the school district. We don't know where Mr. Tom is now...what's that you say? No, we don't think Ms. Eleanor has him locked in the attic.

Ms. Eleanor has written a column against the proposed 19th Street bridge [HERE]. Thankfully, Ms. Eleanor, unlike Mr. Tom, doesn't take us all the way back to the 1800's in her column and she pretty much stays on point.

There are things that need to be made clear about the 19th Street bridge and some of the players who either already are or who will be involved in this play over the next months and years that Ms. Eleanor did not make clear in her column.

But first, a minor geography refresher. There are presently two bridges connecting Costa Mesa to Huntington Beach. One is on Adams and the other is on Victoria. The traffic on Adams and Victoria can be pretty bad as a result. Our guess is that the folks who live just off those streets would like to see some traffic relief.

How could that be made to happen? Why, open a new bridge someplace else, not near where they live--say on 19th Street--to bleed off some of those cars.

or Wendy Leece.

But, we're getting ahead of ourselves. We wonder, why is it that Ms. Eleanor doesn't want the bridge on 19th Street?

Is it because she's concerned about the Westside or the city generally, and out of the goodness of her heart she wants to fight that darn bridge as though she's channeling Carrie Nation, and the bridge is a subconscious symbol of demon rum and the men of the town are being led astray by the demon bridge and ignoring their families? And, we ask breathlessly, is Ms. Eleanor about to wield an ax to chop that evil bridge down even before it is built?

Well, maybe. But, could it be more simple--but a lot less visually interesting--than that? Could it be because Ms. Eleanor and Mr. Tom live on the Westside Bluffs near 19th Street? If the bridge is built, it'll be close to their home. They may even be able to see it from their back yard. So, of course, not being trolls, they don't want the bridge built.

And, Ms. Wendy (Leece) also lives near 19th Street, so she'll be against the bridge also. Yes, dear theatre goers, the Dead End Kids don't want that bridge near their dead end.

However, Supervisor John Moorlach, (Mr. John) who is the big suit pushing for the bridge, and who lives way over in the Mesa Verde Collection just off Adams Ave. may argue that the bridge will end the, er, dead end nature of the Westside and with traffic flowing through the area, the Westside will improve.

Is Mr. John convinced that the 19th Street bridge will be great for the Westside and Costa Mesa, so that's why he wants it? Are his motives pure and selfless? Maybe.

But, it may also be that Mr. John figures if there's a 19th Street bridge it may cut the traffic on Adams (near his home, remember) and also with a 19th Street bridge way over on the Westside, the prospect of a Gisler Street bridge (also in Mesa Verde) will be gone forever.

But wait, there's more. Councilmember Eric Bever (Mr. Eric), who has not yet taken the stage, lives just off Victoria Street, and if a 19th Street bridge is built, Mr. Eric may believe that will take away some of the traffic on Victoria, so expect him to have a part in this play as well.

There are more actors in this play--such as Jim Righeimer and Steve Mensinger (who both live in Mesa Verde)--but their interests and motives may be more involved in building political capital with Mesa Verde residents and Mr. John and the big GOP suits, by supporting a 19th Street bridge to lessen Adams traffic and completely killing off the prospect of a Gisler Street bridge than them being personally affected one way or another with a new bridge.

And then there's the no small matter of Banning Ranch and possible motives relating to it. But, that's in Act II.

And, there's even more. There's CALTRANS that can, it seems, overrule everyone, like the congressional base closing commission, and put in a freeway right through your bedroom if they choose without so much as saying "May we please."

More will happen on the stage, dear readers, before the final curtain, but what the CM PRESS wants to hear are objective arguments pro and con, with facts and examples backing them up, about what is best for the Westside and the City.

We don't care about what is best for this or that individual or what is best for Banning Ranch or Newport Beach or commuters from Huntington Beach.

We care about what is best for the Westside and Costa Mesa (in that order); and if the rest of Costa Mesa must bear a little more traffic to improve the Westside, then we come down in favor of the Westside--which we have always considered key to improving all of Costa Mesa.

We know that everyone whose ox is about to be gored will try to have someone else's ox gored instead. Such is human nature.

COLOR BLIND IDEOLOGY IS A FORM OF RACISM

It sounds as though the author of the above column has been reading my stuff.

Of course, this kind of truth about race just drives the Good Whites even more nuts than they are already.

They just don't dare talk about race because, as I've written many times over the years, and as the author of the above piece now states again, the Good Whites treat dark skin as though it's a large wart on someone's face or some other birth defect that they must ignore and not stare at.

Go ahead, you Good Whites, read the above column written by a non-White and see if this finally frees you from your mental prison which probably even makes you a little nervous about asking for white paint if the paint salesman is Black and there are many Black people in the paint store.

We imagine a Good White fearing that something like the following might happen...

"Oh, you want WHITE paint do you?" asks the Black salesman at the top of his voice. "Are you in the KKK? Maybe you're a white supremacist or a Nazi. COUNCIL GOING TOO FAST? NOPE, IT'S GOING TOO SLOW!

We keep seeing and hearing comments from the slow thinking Wendyites who say that the City Council is going too fast.

We disagree.

We think the Council is going too slow, and especially on the Westside.

And, we're tired of hearing some Councilmembers bragging about fixing potholes as though that's improvement. Folks, that isn't improvement, that's routine maintenance.

We want to see genuine improvement. We want to see major changes. We want to see a revitalized Westside.

If you think you've noticed our tone getting sharper regarding the Council, you're right. The honeymoon is over. The Council has had plenty of time to get things moving and to get their priorities straightened out. Now, we want to see action.

Don't even imply that fixing potholes is improvement. That's crap. That'd be like saying sweeping your kitchen floor is a kitchen remodel.

And, as we've said many times before, we want a smaller and more efficient government, not a bloated monstrosity.

So, what is the Council doing? It's talking about laying off the employees who actually do some work that we can see, and is porking up the executive offices with high paid paper pushers who will smile and say the politic things.

To be clear. We agree with right-sizing government. We agree that many jobs can and should be outsourced. We agree that staff should be cut back (hopefully by attrition and hiring freezes).

What we don't agree with is claiming that government is being right-sized because the blue collar workers are being cut, while the executive suites are being packed to the brim with expensive paper pushers.

Time permitting, it looks as though the CM PRESS will have to become more active at City Council meetings again in order to push for some real improvement on the Westside and to suggest to the Council that they're screwing up by putting too many executives on the City payroll.

You don't right size government by laying off all the workers and then hiring too many executives who aren't needed.

We now have a CEO and an Assistant CEO. What next, an assistant to the Assistant CEO and then an assistant to the assistant to the Assistant CEO?

We'll once again remind the Council that we're in an election year and that they need to adjust their course, or they may find people who were behind them suddenly not being behind them anymore.

In the above story you'll read that this is overwhelmingly a Black problem. And then you'll see the usual PC reflexive reaction about it being because of "institutional racism," or "the economy." Nowhere in the story will you read that the real cause is genes.

NEO-CON NOGOODNIK EDWARD KOCH PENS A HATE FILLED COLUMN AGAINST RON PAUL

Koch is another of the Israel Firsters who would like the U.S. to attack Iran. Never mind that American kids would die in a meaningless war that is not in our best interests.

Israel is not one of the United States. It must stand on its own, and the U.S. shouldn't be sucked into any conflicts it has with its neighbors.

As we often see with such columns as Koch's, the seeming attacks against one person (this time Ron Paul) are really attacks on all of the indigenous peoples of Europe in the European diaspora who have any sense of their identity and any desire to further their interests as the distinct people that they are. Such columns are intended to slap down any sense of White identity and White cohesiveness.

Whenever you read such hate filled columns, scratch the surface and get some information on the writer and his or her biases. If people of one race attack people of another race, don't let them keep their race a secret. Trumpet it. If people of one religion attack people of another religion, don't let them keep their religion a secret. Trumpet it. If people of one political persuasion attack people of another political persuasion, don't let them keep their political persuasion a secret. Trumpet it.

The problem with hate columns such as Koch's is that people don't scratch the surface and think (if they think about it at all) that the writer has no biases and no agendas. Don't buy it. Scratch the surface. Get their biographical information.

MR. TOM DOESN'T WANT YOU TO CRITICIZE THE SCHOOL BOARD

[UPDATE: Boys and girls, be sure to have your mommy and daddy read the comments HERE under the Daily Pilot article mentioned below.

That funny Mr. Tom now has a whole long string of comments there that quote material going all the way back to the 1800's. Honest Injun. Please someone tell Mr. Tom, the issue is simple: The school board should spend the money they get on the kids, not on themselves. And, if there's a shortage of money, the kids come first.]

Good morning boys and girls. Here's a photo of Tom Egan. Let's call him Mr.Tom.

Mr. Tom is a frequent critic of the good City Councilmembers, but now he's also criticizing those who criticize the school board.

Mr.Tom is funny. He goes to City Council meetings and just sort of complains a lot.

Recently, Mr. Tom wrote a column in the Daily Pilot. Then, Mr. Tom thought I had commented on that column under a phony name. Mr. Tom was sad when I told him that it wasn't me. Can you draw a sad face, boys and girls? Oh, I forgot, you don't have any pencils to draw with or any paper to draw on. Never mind.

Anyway, Mr. Tom used to be on the NMUSD school board.

HERE'S Mr. Tom's most recent column in the DAILY PILOT. Mr. Tom is criticizing those who criticize the school board for spending too much money on things such as conferences, etc. for the board members instead of on things for you boys and girls.

Mr. Tom wants your mommy and daddy to believe that it's okay for the school board to use your mommy and daddy's money to go to conferences and pay for things that don't help you.

But other people like Mr.Steve Smith over at the Daily Pilot say that money should be spent on you boys and girls. Mr. Tom doesn't like it when Mr. Steve says those things.

So, boys and girls, where are the schools going to get money if the school board doesn't give it to them?

Why, that's right, the schools ask your mommy and daddy for the money. This makes some mommies and daddies mad because they already give money to the school board that is supposed to be used on you. It's called taxes.

Recently, at least one school in the district sent out a letter to your mommy and daddy asking them to donate money to the school so the school can buy stuff for you.

Now, boys and girls, remember what I just told you above? Your hard working mommy and daddy already contribute money to the school. It's called taxes. Your mommy and daddy's money is supposed to be used by the school board to buy this stuff that is needed in the schools and not use it to go to unnecessary conferences and for other wasteful things.

You see, boys and girls, the school board has NO money. Every penny belongs to your mommy and daddy and the school board is supposed to use that money on you.

So, boys and girls, what do you think your mommy and daddy should do about this?

SUPREME COURT MAY FAVOR STATES IN IMMIGRATION LAWS BATTLE

Nice column in the LA TIMES.

Right now, the immigration laws in the U.S. are a mess with the lower courts ruling all over the place on their constitutionality. Hopefully, the Supreme Court will make some broad rulings when it hears the Arizona case that will bring some consistency to immigration.

IN D.C. AREA BLACK STUDENTS EXPELLED FROM SCHOOL 5 TIMES MORE THAN WHITES

And, the dimwitted neurotic self-hating Good Whites croon that it must be White American racism. And, all the Black attacks on Whites. More White American racism. And, the high Black crime rate. More White American racism. And, the high Black crime rate in England. More White American racism, ah, more White racism. And, the high Black crime rate in Denmark. More White American racism, ah, more White racism.

See any patterns? The establishment and the press would prefer that you not see such patterns.

That's why, in addition to the excuses you'll find in the above linked story, they try to hide the race of violent criminals.

How many stories have you read in local newspapers about cops trying to find violent criminals and the only description given is that they are male or teens or are a certain age? Why is that? It's because the press is trying to persuade you that violent crime is an equal opportunity employer. It isn't. Not by a long shot, and if you know this you may be just a little safer.

Genes are us. Know it, and you'll start to understand the human condition a little more and you may keep from being a victim.

At this point, the Good Whites sniffle "Well, not every Black or non-White is a criminal." Sigh. Yes, we know that. Most aren't. What we're saying is that in life you have to play the odds. You have to use your senses and your brain to be aware of the world around you and to be able to discern probabilities and possible danger.

Our present Dark Age has gotten so PC stupid that TSA treats 90-year-old White women getting on a plane the same as 20's something dusky guys with beards and shifty eyes. That's just nuts, and it's done so we don't "profile" anyone, mostly based on race or ethnicity.

And, "profiling," that is, as we naturally use it in our everyday lives--if we haven't yet had our brains pithed by the conditioning of society to not do it and to instead override our sense of danger; our gut feelings--is simply the automatic processes of our brain taking measurements of the things around us and using subconscious inductive and deductive reasoning to help us survive.

That's why we have our five senses. They exist to help us survive. But, in our present Dark Age, we are told to not believe our senses and to not profile. We are told to override that gut feeling. And, the establishment and the press are trying to help with that conditioning by hiding facts from the public. That's why you see non-White rioters at malls only described as "teens," or "youth," and why many violent criminals aren't described at all.

Look at it this way. Not every shark is going to bite you, but you still are bright enough to know that you're more likely to be bitten by a shark than a flounder.

Would you tell your kids that they shouldn't profile fish and just jump in the water with sharks nearby? Yes, Good Whites, I know we can't be that clear with human beings, but the principle is the same to a lesser or greater degree depending on many surrounding circumstances.

The point of this column is simply to say that you shouldn't let yourself be conditioned by the establishment or the press so that you walk into danger that might otherwise be avoided. It's about survival. Trust your eyes and your other senses and trust that gut feeling--it's your brain telling you something. Get into the habit of consciously profiling. It may save your life.

In Israel, the Ultra-Orthodox are doubling their population every 12 years or so, because of their high birthrate.

According to this additional article [HERE] Ultra-Orthodox Jewish women in the U.S. have an average of 6.6 children each, and the Hasidim (the Ultra-Ultra Orthodox) women average 7.9 children each, while secular Jewish women average just 1.86 children each.

This second article [HERE AGAIN] points out that in an Ultra-Orthodox area of New Jersey, the Synagogues are flourishing. Why? The high birthrate.

It's a simple rule of nature that if you multiply your kind, you tend to expand and flourish, and if you don't, you are contracting and dying off as a distinct people.

How's the above headline sound to you?

It sounds fine to the CM PRESS. In fact, we're glad whenever we see Native Americans, or any other distinct group of humans, resisting their genocide--whether it's direct or via assimilation and blending--and feeling pride in who and what they are as a distinct people and trying to survive and thrive as a distinct people.

But, here's the thing about this. How would you feel if the above headline read: Born White, Die White?

Would you suddenly run for cover and call it racist? If so, why?

The Native American behind the above march also proudly says that he is "full blood" Native American.

How would you feel if a White said that he is "full blood" White?

If you're one of the Good Whites, and you heard a White claim he was "full blood" White, you'd probably be out having hug-a-thons and candle light marches to show that you're against "racism," and how you don't even want to be White, but, damn it, you were cursed by being born that way and you've been trying to get rid of that Whiteness ever since.

In fact, if you're a Good White, you might even try to get into the Native American march to show just how good a White you are. You might even put a feather in your hair to show how good a White you are.

And, yes, this could lead to a much longer column here about Great White Mothers and Great White Fathers and Lord Jims and the other terms I've coined over the years to describe the pitiful and neurotic self-hating Good Whites, but you get the idea.

IRAN PREPARES TO TIGHTEN MILITARY COOPERATION WITH IRAQ

This was predictable (and we predicted it) years ago. Some U.S. politicians seem incapable of making fine line distinctions involving people, their societies, and their religions. What we are now seeing in that part of the world shows this.

Okay, here are some future things to watch and which we think have a high degree of probability of happening. Remember, we don't deal in certainties, but in probabilities:

1. Iran will get nukes. In fact they may already have some (but probably not home grown ones at this point). The Iranians would be stupid to not have nukes as a deterrent.

2. Iraq will eventually have a government very similar to Iran's. That is, there will be an Ayatollah who will be the power behind the throne.

3. Russia and China will vie for the affections (and oil) of the Muslim countries. With the hatred for us that our out of touch successive D.C. administrations have built up against us because of our double standard foreign policy, the duo should be able to trump the U.S. in this regard. This means, in part, that Russia and China will start increasing the sale of top of the line military weapons to Muslim countries, including Iran and Iraq, as they bargain for oil and friendship. At this point, many Muslim countries are not going to be satisfied with old technology weapons and will want the newest and the best, and they can play Russia and China off against each other to get them.

4. Watch for big problems in Saudi Arabia--a nation that is more a family than a real nation--as the ordinary people get more and more upset with the rulers who are now propped up by Washington.

It would be better to hire someone with experience in economic development who already lives in Costa Mesa, then someone who has no experience what so ever. Naghavi may be a good engineer, but he hasn't a clue how to fix the westside or to encourage more businesses to relocate to Costa Mesa. If you are such a fiscal conservative, you would have to ask why create another highly paid position when the cities goal is to reduce the size of government. Something to ponder.

We've already said that we think the Council is screwing up by hiring so many people at the top with big salaries.

It's not what we would be doing if we were on the Council. But, we're not on the Council. As always, we try to weigh the good that we think the Council is doing with the bad. So far, the good is winning.

We think Naghavi should have been named Asst. CEO, but that didn't happen. As far as we can tell, Naghavi may be the last of the old hands at City Hall, and he may be the only one there who knows where the fuse box is in case the lights go out.

And as far as Naghavi's qualifications for this new position, we suspect this was just a catch-all title that was dreamed up to keep Naghavi around. We also suspect that Naghavi will continue to do two or three jobs in addition to what his new title will be.

Our impression of Naghavi is that he's a pretty bright guy and can adapt to whatever new tasks are thrown at him very quickly.

Here's the thing about everything that is being done by our municipal government; the buck stops at the City Council, and if the voters of Costa Mesa are not convinced that the Council is improving Costa Mesa and their lives here in the city, then they'll make changes during the election in the new year.

As we've written many times before, the CM PRESS has no friends in politics and we try to keep at an arms length from all politicians so that we can stay true to the things we think need to be done in Costa Mesa.

You may recall that we once supported Wendy Leece, but she let us and the city down.

It may turn out that we'll also change our support to other politicians this year. But, we're not at that point yet and we continue to watch and listen and weigh pros and cons.

Nobody blows smoke up our kilt, and talk is cheap. So far, some of the good Councilmembers have the right talk as far as the Westside goes, but we want to see a lot more action.

AL-SADR MAKING A MOVE IN IRAQ

Finally, we have a City Council (with the exception of Wendy Leece) that has some brass ones and that is driving the changes that are so needed in this city.

Naturally, the mice people and the bloggers lacking testosterone don't see it that way. This fearful gang of nincompoops are afraid of everything including life itself. "Slow down," they say and one is reminded of the people who thought going 25 miles per hour in early automobiles was dangerous.

Once again, to get just the right picture of some of these nitwits, do this little exercise in method acting: Find some rough wool or burlap underwear and put them on. Put on some shoes that are three sizes too small. Put on a rough pair of wool pants and a too tight shirt after dipping them in water. Then, stand with your knees touching but your feet apart. Point your toes inward. Hold your nose and whine: "We're going too fast. This is all soooooo stresssssful."

Yes, dear friends, these dimwits were afraid because of layoffs. They were afraid because the helicopter was being grounded. They were afraid because of police cutbacks. They were afraid...of everything. As we go into 2012, they'll still be afraid. It's in their nature to be afraid. Everything new scares them. Shadows scare them. Life scares them. They lack the life force. They are winter walking.

What's the best way to treat such feeble people? Ignore and shun them. They are chicken littles and full of death and negativity. They are hollow husks incapable of generative thinking. Their brains are as barren as their loins.

Notwithstanding the above, this is not to say that the good Councilmembers have been doing everything right. We refer of course to the lack of real progress on the Westside, but we're hopeful that 2012 will bring some real changes there.

And, as we wrote before, there are some inexpensive and quick things the good Councilmembers can do right now that will begin the changes on the Westside--such as putting in proper signs to announce one's entry to the Westside on W. 19th Street.

Does this sound like a waste of time and money to you? It's not. It's repackaging the Westside by getting rid of the old dull package. The signs will announce the changes and help them happen. It'll also please the landlords and tenants on the street as more customers will feel comfortable about getting out of their cars and going into stores there.

For our part, we'll be constantly reminding everyone--including the Council--that the Westside needs to be fixed. If nothing else, they may get moving just to shut us up.

What is the one thing the "youths" have in common that the AP doesn't want you to know? The youths are mostly Black and their victims are mostly not Black.

Peter Naghavi

NAGHAVI TO GET NEW JOB WITH THE CITY AS ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR

At least he will if the City Council votes him in at their January 3rd meeting.

This is a new position that is being created and Naghavi, if the Council so decides, will be the first person to hold this job.

We have a couple of things on our wish list about this:

1. We wish Naghavi would move to Costa Mesa so some of that great salary we're paying him would circulate right here.

2. We wish this position were more geared towards fixing the Westside, i.e. that it had less emphasis on "economic" and more on, say, "improving the Westside by helping implement the Westside plans."

On wish #1: Cities in California aren't allowed to require their workers to live in the city where they work. By contrast, in Massachusetts, where there is no such law, many cities, including Boston, require all City workers to live in the city where they work. But, even though Costa Mesa can't require our employees to live here, we think it would be a show of good faith for Naghavi to voluntarily move to Costa Mesa.

On wish #2: Perhaps, even though nothing about the Westside is mentioned in his new job description, Mr. Hatch will task Naghavi with putting some effort into fixing that area of our city that is most in need of fixing.

MEANWHILE...HB COPS AND PRESS WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT A WHITE GUY HAS BEEN CONVICTED OF A HATE CRIME

He reportedly used racial slurs, spit at, and then rode his bicycle towards an Hispanic woman.

This points up something that I've written about before.

Whites are mouthy. They will often engage in ritual combat--by calling names--but there is often no physical combat.

One has to suspect that this is a genetically caused mechanism to relieve psychological pressure. When it's two Whites involved, it often ends right there with the name calling.

However, other racial groups seem to go to physical combat sooner, so a White who engages in name calling against some non-Whites may subconsciously be programmed to believe that's the end of it, but the non-White participant is subconsciously programmed to take it up a level. This often leads to the White person being blindsided with the physical violence.

HB COPS HIDING THE NAME OF THE KILLER OF 19-YEAR-OLD

Generally, when a non-White murders a White, the cops and the press try to hide, or delay for as long as possible, either the racial identity of the victim or the suspect so that Whites don't have their consciousness raised to the fact that they, as a race, are often the targets of race hate crimes.

Once White public interest and emotion about such a murder wanes, the cops and the press may reveal the identity of the suspect or the victim. But, even then, if it is a White victim and a non-White suspect, the cops and the press will often try to attribute the murder to some motive other than race hate of Whites.

In the above murder in Huntington Beach we figure there's a high probability that the murderer has an Asian or Latino name and that this is what the cops are hiding or holding back.

We'll try to keep track of this and if the murder suspect's name is revealed, we'll let you know.

Knowledge of crime probabilities can help keep you and yours safe. Don't be a victim of PCitis.

McCAIN SAYS IRAQ UNRAVELLING AFTER OBAMA'S REMOVAL OF U.S. TROOPS

Nope. Obama isn't to blame. The George Bushes (both of them) are to blame, but mostly bull in a china shop George the younger.

As we wrote years ago, the only reason that Iraq was reasonably stable--and somewhat Western in its views--was because of the iron hand of Saddam Hussein (a Sunni) who kept the opposing religious and ethnic groups in check.

Saddam's much reported "brutality against his own people" (remember all the planted stories about his brutality in the U.S. press that were, in addition to the phony WMD stories, used to excuse our invasion?) was Saddam's attempt to keep the country from becoming what it is now becoming--an Islamic state under the rule of Shiites.

We predicted that if Saddam were removed, the Shiites would seek ascendancy and that they'd align themselves with Iran (a predominantly Shiite nation),and that's what we're seeing starting to happen. In addition, the Kurds are stepping up their campaign to have their area of Iraq become a separate nation.

We also predicted many times, and this still hasn't happened yet, that if and when Shiite cleric Muqtada-al-Sadr obtains the rank of Ayatollah that all hell is going to break loose in Iraq. Actually, it may break loose sooner than that as a way for him to obtain that rank.

Stay tuned, but don't blame Obama for this.

THE 19th STREET BRIDGE MEETS IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A WONDERFUL LIFE IF THE CITY COUNCIL HAD ONLY HAD THAT THIRD VOTE

As I happily sit here in my loft overlooking the marina and beach at the end of W. 19th Street that has turned the Westside into the place to be in Costa Mesa, Clarence enters the picture and shows me what the Westside would be like in December 2011 had the Costa Mesa City Council in the past not had the third vote to go forward with the marina.

The vision is horrible.

There are illegal aliens all over the place. The schools stink. The slums are growing. Street gangs are robbing people. Upwardly mobile people are fleeing for nicer areas rather than being trapped in a slum. The best restaurant on W. 19th Street is a free soup kitchen. Pawn shops and downscale businesses line the street. Charities are growing. Charity bosses are treated like royalty. And, now there's talk of putting a bridge in that will increase traffic in the area and which will eventually connect up with the 57 freeway and make Costa Mesa little more than a traffic island.

I say,"Clarence, this is horrible. Take me back to reality. Take me back to the Costa Mesa with the marina and beach and a nice Westside. This is a future we must not have."

Clarence replies, "This is the present. This is the reality. You were dreaming. There never was a marina. There was no third vote and the marina plan died."

TWO IMPORTANT MEETINGS FOR COSTA MESANS--JANUARY 4TH AND 5TH

19th Street bridge

Orange County Supervisor John Moorlach will hold an open house at Huntington Beach’s Eader Elementary School Thursday, Jan. 5 at 7 p.m. to discuss a potential bridge across the Santa Ana River at W. 19th Street in Costa Mesa.

The intent of the meeting is “to solicit feedback from residents regarding the future of a bridge,” which is on the county’s master transportation plan.

Eader Elementary School is at 9291 Banning Ave. in Huntington Beach.

We hope so. For our part, we'll try to keep the Westside front and center. However, what happens on the Westside is largely what the City Council wants to happen or not happen.

If the City Council finally puts fixing the Westside as its major priority for the new year, we'll see the changes that are needed.

So important is fixing the Westside, that the CM PRESS thinks setting it as our goal should be our local version of JFK's pledge to take America to the moon.

And, remember, fixing the Westside is not just about fixing the Westside.

Fix the Westside and you'll fix the rest of Costa Mesa.

Why?

UPDATE ON THE WESTSIDE URBAN PLANS

There are three Westside Urban Plans: 1. 19 West Urban Plan. 2. Mesa West Bluffs Urban Plan. 3. Mesa West Residential Ownership Urban Plan.

City Staff let us know late today that you can find (if you look really, really hard) the 19 West Urban Plan on the City's Website, and that when the new Website is launched in February, it'll be easier to find.

HERE is the 19 West Urban Plan.

There are inexpensive things that the City Council can do right now to start implementing the 19 West Urban Plan.

For example, go to Adobe Reader page 24 of the 19 West Urban Plan and you'll see signs suggested for the entrance to the Westside on W. 19th Street that, if installed, and if done correctly,will start the process of giving the street an upscale identity and setting a new tone for the area.

Never underestimate the power of a good signage program to change the perception of an area.

Next, we need the other two Westside Urban Plans also put up on the City's Website for everyone to see.

These three plans work together to make the Westside the great part of town that it should be. And the plans can be implemented a small piece at a time as money and other factors allow.

WHERE ARE THE WESTSIDE PLANS?

We sent an email to the good new City Council members and others at City Hall this morning asking why the Westside Plans aren't on the City's Website. We'll let you know what we hear.

The new Council has had plenty of time to start making some major changes on the Westside and we're going to be sure the Council knows of our concerns that it's not happening as it should.

New readers may not be aware of this, but when the Westside Plans were being worked on, it was documented in great detail that a large part of the Westside legally qualified to be in a redevelopment zone, and eminent domain could have been used to bulldoze much of what is now standing over there.

However, it was decided to not take that expensive and extreme route but to instead try to encourage and make it easier for developers to come in and buy up properties, make the changes, and show a nice profit because of the relaxed standards permitted by the plans.

Then, the economy crashed and the new City Council focused almost exclusively on getting Costa Mesa's financial house in order.

Well, it looks as though things are picking up in the financial sector locally--witness the $3.8 million surplus the City is showing as we reported in CM PRESS # 715.

Costa Mesa finishes 2010-11 fiscal year with a $3.8 [million] budget surplus
[This is a City press release that we're publishing with no editing other than adding [million] to the City's headline. The body of the press release makes it clear that the surplus wasn't just three dollars and eight cents. We wish we could suggest that this money-- the millions, not the three bucks and change--be used to buy up slum buildings on the Westside, but it's going into the reserve fund to fill that back up after being drained over the past few years.]

COSTA MESA, CALIF.—Costa Mesa’s General Fund finished the 2010-11 fiscal year with a $3.8 million surplus, according to the City’s recently completed annual financial audit.

Higher-than-expected sales tax revenues and budget-tightening measures erased a projected $1.4 million deficit, and the City finished in the black for the first time since fiscal year 2006-07.

The independent audit, known as Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) and available shortly on the City’s website, shows that the surplus resulted from receiving $95.3 million in revenue and transfers in, while paying $91.5 million in expenditures and transfers out for the year that ended June 30.

The $3.8 million surplus went into the City’s reserve fund, helping raise available cash in November (when cash flow is at its lowest) from about $5 million in 2010 to about $10 million this year. The cash reserves are still short of the $14 million minimum that the City, by Council policy, is supposed to set aside for natural disasters and emergencies. The City had used more than $30 million of its reserves in the previous three fiscal years while trying to balance its budget.

Compared to the prior fiscal year, total revenues increased 4.2%, while expenditures decreased sharply by 8.6%. Revenues rose because of a slight rebound in the economy and the voter-approved increase in the hotel tax rate. Savings were attained through layoffs, positions left vacant, employees contributing more to their pensions, and reductions in service.

In addition to restoring its reserve fund, the City Council has pledged to start paying down the significant $255 million in unfunded liabilities and begin a 5-year, multi-million-dollar capital improvement plan to make infrastructure repairs and improvements that had been put off in recent times because of budget shortfalls.

To: By Answers, got any?: Yes, we do have answers, and the first thing the Council should do is get you off the Planning Commission.

Then, the Council should get their monetary and other priorities straight. There are people on the Council who understand how to put real estate deals together. By making a conscious decision that the Westside will be their highest priority, and then by putting the Westside Plans front and center, things will start happening.

We already did the necessary thinking about what has to be done, and it's in the aforementioned Westside Plans. Just read them and implement them.

And, the City does have the money to begin removing slums. It just has to spend it correctly. One thing the Council needs to stop is the hiring of more executives at City Hall. Use that money for the buying up slums fund.

RELIGIOUS JEWS TRYING TO SEGREGATE BUSES IN ISRAEL

They believe that women should sit in the back of buses.

The larger issue here is how, in the modern world, can we allow people to follow their religious beliefs when those religious beliefs conflict with the secular plain wrap, one size fits all society?

The religious Jews in the above story believe that it is a religious requirement for men and women to be segregated. And, since Israel's claim to existence is that this is the land given to Jews by God, the religious Jews believe that all of Israel should be as religious as they are.

Such conflicts aren't limited to Jews and Israel. We find similar conflicts between religious Muslims and various countries in which they now live.

And, we find a similar conflict with the Amish and the outside world, and with the fundamentalist Mormons such as the FLDS which have numbers of their believers in Arizona, Utah, Texas and Canada.

The question for society is what do you do with people with deeply held religious views who won't conform to the what's happening now standards of the larger society?

Should these religious people be forced to give up their religious views because they do not fit in with what the larger society wants?

Or, should they be left alone to follow their religious views--in their own communities--so long as they don't try to force them on others in the outside world? But if this view is accepted, what happens if people who don't follow these religious views move into the communities of those who do?

IS COSTA MESA'S CITY COUNCIL SCREWING UP?

As regular readers know, we've generally been supportive of what the new City Council has been doing.

That is, we've long felt that the City was too larded up with employees. And, we've long believed that it should cut back; but largely through attrition and hiring freezes and with some logical outsourcing.

Our position hardened in favor of the Council after we started reading all the hate messages left by presumed employees.

However, we're not in favor of letting the lower level workers go and filling upper level executive positions with much more expensive (and, perhaps, less productive) paper pushers as it seems the Council is now doing.

Take the recent hiring of Rick Francis as the new Asst. CEO. This guy is going to be making something like $ 144,000 per year and he's a newbie to City government; doesn't know his way around and hasn't come up from the ranks.

Prior to Francis' hiring, the City had appointed long time employee Peter Naghavi as the interim Asst. CEO. We thought that was a good move. Here's why. We've watched Naghavi over the years and this guy would have saved us money as the Asst. CEO. Not only would he have done the Asst. CEO job, but we're confident he'd also be doing his present job and the one below that as well.

You can hardly drive around this city where some City worker is digging a hole for something or other and not also see Naghavi there making sure the job is done right.

For the price of one Asst. CEO, we would have gotten a guy--Naghavi--who would do two or three jobs, so we wouldn't have to hire people to fill those jobs. That's just good economy.

We're also not pleased with some of the deadwood that the Council has on the two commissions.

And, we're especially not pleased that all the efforts of this Council seem to be going in directions other than fixing the Westside.

Part of the problem with this Council is that a few of the people on the Council seem to be more in tune with the establishment GOP than with Costa Mesa. They may find that's a big mistake come the election next year if they don't make some fast course corrections.

I'M OBSESSED

Below in "bold italic" is a line from a much longer comment I got from an anonymous reader the other day.

"[Y]our obsession with race prevents good people from wanting to be associated with you in any manner."

Yeah? Good people? Who are they? Don't they want a dialog on race as mentioned by President Obama? Or, are they afraid to talk about race?

Do these good people, if they're White, think that talking about races, other than Whites, is like talking about someone who has a birth defect and that it is something that shouldn't be talked about in polite society?

Are they afraid to look at crime and other statistics and even more afraid that they might see patterns that follow racial lines?

Are they afraid to accept people as they are, with their differences, or must all people fit into a mold--a White mold--which is really what many Whites are doing when they try to deny race?

Are they the low self-esteem Whites who hide in the shadows and act like whipped dogs who have had their spirits broken and who one thinks might even be afraid to say they prefer white meat on a turkey, lest they be called racist?

Please spare me the company of such good people. I avoid them whenever possible. They are the weak seeds among us and are to be treated as the flat-worlders that they truly are.

As thinking Whites have noticed, it is mostly only low consciousness Whites who run from any mention of race unless it is to praise non-Whites and slam Whites. These are the same types of Whites who have no problem with there being a Congressional Black Caucus and a Congressional Hispanic Caucus, and many groups furthering interests of non-Whites, but let anyone suggest that we should have a Congressional White Caucus and groups that further White interests and they begin blustering and calling names to demonstrate just how wonderfully aracial--how un-White they are inside.

Enough of that. The first part of the commenter's sentence posited the notion that I have an obsession with race. Actually, I don't. Not about race, per se. I'm more concerned with DNA and genes.

But I do have an obsession. It is an obsession with trying to figure out if there is any meaning to existence and especially of life in general, and human life in particular. This leads naturally to looking at human differences and evolution, psychology, physics and on and on.

Yup, I'm obsessed. I want answers to the big questions of existence. What does it all mean? But, writing directly about such things will bore most people, unless they have a certain turn of mind, and that's not what I primarily want to do in the CM PRESS. However, you will find (if you know how to look), many things in the CM PRESS that tangentially often do explore elements of the big questions as they relate to the human condition. They are usually presented in a toss away fashion, but they're there. I am who I am, and my obsession with the big questions of existence automatically colors much of what I do. Such is the way of obsessions.

IS COSTA MESA'S CITY GOVERNMENT GETTING TOO TOP HEAVY?

The CM PRESS has supported much of what the new Council is doing, but we do think City government is starting to get too top heavy and we also think the Council needs to put fixing the broken Westside as its top priority.

Or, to put this in other words, we think the new Council may be putting too much effort into outsourcing at the lower employment end while porking up at the top, and also may be putting too little effort into fixing the Westside.

And, speaking of this, I once did some consulting to a small manufacturing firm that was having some financial problems. When I visited the factory, I gathered with the executives in the production office that overlooked the lathes that produced the products the firm made.

There were 6 of us in the office looking out the window to the shop floor with the lathes. There was only one machinist working to make the products. Six of us watching and one working. The company had plenty of orders for its products. It had no raw material supply problems. It just had too many paper pushers and not enough workers. We changed that.

Maybe it's time for the new Council to make some mid-course corrections to its trajectory.

Crissy Brooks

CRISSY BROOKS AND THE SCHOLARSHIPS THAT MAY GO MAINLY TO HISPANICS

In the above column, Crissy-it's-all-about-Hispanics-Brooks, the daughter of Dave Brooks, the president of the Newport Mesa Unified School district and a pastor to the CMPD,* tells us that the scholarships given out by SOY are in danger for lack of funding.

What Brooks fails to tell readers is that those scholarships seem to be going almost exclusively to Hispanics.

If you're a poor White, say a single mother, your White kids probably wouldn't get one of those scholarships.

At least that's what we've gleaned from looking at the lists of those getting the scholarships over the past years.

Now, if we're mistaken, please give us the statistics on the race/ethnicity of those getting those scholarships.

Some of the speculative threads of the buzz are these:

1. He was pursued by Tom Hatch to use as a foil against Righeimer, et. al.

2. He was pursued by Tom Hatch to help Righeimer, et. al.

3. He was hired to slight Peter Naghavi.

4. He was hired by the hidden hand of Righeimer or Mensinger.

5. He was hired by what some might characterize as a growing born again religious Mafia in local government. (See the "back off" subtle threat from a reader in CM PRESS # 711)

6. He simply saw a job opportunity and applied out of the blue.

7. He was hired by the hidden hand of Supervisor Moorlach. (See Moorlach's email below. Note also that Francis was a pastor at the church attended by Moorlach.)

DOES COSTA MESA'S NEW ASST. CEO SOUND ARROGANT?

When we first read that Rick Francis had been hired by Tom Hatch as his Assistant CEO--leaping over hard working and long time city employee Peter Naghavi who had the job on an interim basis--we thought he sounded a little arrogant.

But, we held off writing about it and thought maybe it was just the way the reporter (at the OC Register) had written the story.

Now, our spidey sense is giving us that same feeling from a different reporter and a different newspaper. Click on the headline above for this new story in the Daily Pilot and see what you think.

Adding to our feeling about this, is the comment below from Rich S., now appearing in the Daily Pilot. Rich S. is a frequent commenter over there and he constantly rails against the new Council. Rich S. also seems to know Francis.

In his praise of Francis, Rich S. fairly drips with hatred of Mayor Pro Tem Righeimer and seems to think (if we read between the lines a little) that Francis is going to counter Righeimer (and presumably the rest of the good Council).

Obama administration says only the Feds can enforce immigration laws.

States say the Feds aren't doing the job so the states will do it in their own states.

Thus do we come to a major issue concerning federal power vs. states rights.

When one goes down several levels from the laws themselves to basic principles of how our society functions, one comes to an axiom that grows out of principles of personal responsibility and self-reliance that we think applies here:

You always have the right to delegate your authority to do things for you to others but you can never delegate your responsibility.

In the present context, we would say that the states have delegated some of their authority to the feds to enforce immigration laws so the people of the states will be protected from illegal immigration and its many negative effects.

However, the feds are not using the authority that has been delegated to them, so the states must be responsible and ensure their citizens are protected.

THIS IS PERRY VALENTINE

Valentine used to work for the City of Costa Mesa and was on staff back when we had a series of do-nothing City Councils that mostly rubber stamped whatever staff put in front of them.

Valentine is now retired from the City and has a nice pension.

He now seems to spend a lot of time complaining about the present do-something City Council. He's probably not used to seeing a Council that initiates and expects staff to implement.

You may recall that at one meeting several months ago, Valentine and some others said that Steve Mensinger should recuse himself from voting on a matter about youth sports because both Mensinger and his wife are involved in youth sports in the city.

You may also recall that the CM PRESS then went to the podium and said that Steve Mensinger should not recuse himself and that it's a good thing that he and his wife are so active in the city and that we hoped that they would remain active and not have to have Steve recuse himself just because he is so active in the city.

Frankly, if Mensinger had to recuse himself whenever something comes before the City Council that he might be involved in, he'd be recused most of the time. This is absurd and would be like saying we have to have City Council people who are lumps of clay (like some prior City Councilmembers) or who live in other cities in order to not have them recuse themselves.

Mensinger, at the last City Council meeting, made a joke about this recusal nonsense when a matter concerning Target came up and he said that he might have to recuse himself because his wife shops a lot at Target.

Valentine's latest whine [HERE] that is running as a long letter in the Daily Pilot, concerns the proposed charter for the city. He says citizens should write it. His letter is followed by comments from the usual me-too characters who also constantly whine about the Council.

Actually, and contrary to what Valentine and the me-tooers say, citizens can write the charter.

Mayor Pro Tem Jim Righeimer came up with a draft of a charter and now citizens can comment on it and help mold it. That is writing it. Righeimer just supplied a framework.

Had Righeimer not come up with a draft--a starting place--we'd be tied up in meetings with crackpots and cranks for several months as we had to listen to people who would want to put oil drilling rights and you name it in the charter.

Notwithstanding the above, the CM PRESS was also a little apprehensive about the charter that Righeimer wrote when we heard about it, so we took the time to read it (you can do the same thing on the City's website HERE).

What Righeimer's draft does is give citizens of Costa Mesa local control of our government, but with the exact same form of government that we have now. And, that's what the CM PRESS wanted to see in the charter.

We didn't want to see a strong mayor form of government. And, that's not in the charter.

We wanted to see the same number of council members and all elected at large as at present. That's also in the charter.

So, if there's not much changed, why have a charter at all? It's all about local control. It gives the citizens of Costa Mesa the ability to govern ourselves rather than being dictated to by Sacramento.

Ever live in an apartment building where the only thermostat was controlled by one person whose apartment was far removed from yours and whose comfort needs were different from your own? That's what we have now with Sacramento dictating to us.

OUR QUICK IMPRESSIONS OF THE GOP PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES AND MORE BASED ON LAST NIGHT'S DEBATE AND OTHER FACTORS

Ron Paul--We like a lot of his positions, but can you imagine Barney Fife as President? Most people can't. That's his problem. In another life he was a Chihuahua.

Michele Bachmann--Was standing on a platform last night to look as tall as the men. Confused. Doesn't know how to punch out what she would do as President. Had a good line or two with "Newt Romney." Can't ever seem to get her hair right.

Rick Perry--Bowlegged, swaggering cowboy. Should be wearing chaps and running a cattle ranch someplace or doing a Marlboro commercial. Not very bright and can't think on his feet.

Rick Santorum--Always looks as though he wandered in by mistake from the Boy Scout Convention next door.

Mitt Romney--My smarmy meter started going off on this guy a long time ago.

After the Mormons had another convenient what's happen' now revelation that Blacks should be allowed to hold the priesthood in the church, Romney said he pulled his car over to the side of the road in Cambridge, Mass. and began crying tears of joy. Ho hum.

In a previous debate, Romney tried to get a quick laugh by saying his first name really is "Mitt." It's not. His real first name is Willard.

At last night's debate, Romney said he had been a "pastor" in his church. Actually, Mormons don't have pastors but he was apparently trying to pander to Christians from other denominations who respect those with the title or who wouldn't understand what his real position in the church was.

In a previous life, Romney was a wolf caught in the rain. Would be well cast as a senior vampire in one of those teeny, lovey dovey vampire movies that appeal to 13-year-old girls.

Newt Gingrich--A South Boston Irish politician who never actually lived in Boston (Newt was born Newton Leroy McPherson. McPherson is common both in Ireland and Scotland).

I could write a book about why Newt's statement that the Palestinians are an invented people is silly, but let's just say that if you think about it, every people is an invented people.

Our view is that Newt's statement wasn't a slip of the tongue, but was calculated. His strategy is apparently to pander for Jewish votes, praise and money.

Newt's statement last week that he would appoint (warmonger) John Bolton as Secretary of State was also calculated to redound with Jewish voters.

His other major calculation is his amnesty plan. He thinks this will get him the Hispanic vote.

Newt is Napoleon the Pig in Animal Farm, and he'll write whatever is necessary on the barn wall to get his way. If he's elected President, expect to send your kids to a war in a foreign land that will be meaningless for America.

And about the two moderators...

George Stephanopoulos--Did a good hosting job. Asked quick questions and got out of the way. Has matured and has lost that quivering lower lip he used to have.

Diane Sawyer--Was she on go-slow drugs? She wasted a lot of time by not being able to phrase a question quickly and then get out of the way. She was boring and slowed down the debate and made it less dynamic.

We sent an email to ABC telling them they should lose her.

And about the debate camera work...

ABC did a good job in using two-shots of Romney and Gingrich to show reactions.

U.S. SUPREME COURT MEETING IN SECRET TO DECIDE IF THE COURT WILL DECIDE TO TAKE UP ARIZONA'S IMMIGRATION LAW

Court may let us know on Monday.

Frankly, the Arizona law and its progeny springing up across the nation need to be ruled on by the Supreme Court. There's just too much confusion and uncertainty all across the U.S. about illegal immigration.

This could be a landmark case.

And, if the Court does decide to take this up, it'll pretty much take this off the table during the presidential election. This should help Newt Gingrich, if he's the GOP nominee. Gingrich, you may remember, is taking heat from those who want our borders secured and illegal aliens sent home.

If the Court takes this up, Gingrich can simply say he'll obey the law whatever it is, when decided by the Court.

Interestingly, Obama and his administration are urging the Court to not take the matter up.

Hey, Supremos, remember how Obama disrespected you on national TV? It's time for you to let Obama know that we have three branches of government and that he can't tell you what to do.
