The above article reinforces what I've been writing for years: Mutations are common and are usually small things and have a cumulative effect.
However, it is still often taught that mutations are infrequent and mostly deadly to the organism. The reason for this is that the mutations that are most easily seen are major ones, and they often are deadly to the organism or at least harmful to it.
