CM PRESS # 817

UPDATE:  In CM PRESS # 816, we reported that two Blacks pulled a man out of a car in Fla. and beat him with a hammer.  It has now been confirmed that the victim is White, as we had guessed.

WEWE ROBINS STILL HAVING A DIFFICULT TIME WITH THE ROYAL WE CONCEPT

At last night's City Council meetings the Robins Lefflers, once again went to the podiums to ask the Mayors Pro Tem Righeimers who they were talking to since they often use "we," when they speak of somethings.

Ah, Robins, we here at the Costa Mesa Presses think the Jims are just using the royal we, as do we. See?  You see Robins, the Righeimers are probably not using "we" as a plural.

STEVE SMITH STILL DOESN'T UNDERSTAND THAT SCHOOLS DON'T FAIL--STUDENTS FAIL

In Smith's latest column [HERE], Smith once again talks about all the failing schools in Costa Mesa.  Yes, we know such talk is sometimes just a euphemism for the fact that the students in the schools are failing.

However, Smith has written such things so often that one has to believe that his inner liberal has clouded his view of reality and that he truly believes that all humans have the same abilities as all other humans.  Now, that sounds nice and may give us warm and fuzzy feelings, but it's simply not true.  We are all as different as plow horses and race horses.

Here's a little reality: A school is good or bad based on how well the students in that school do on standardized tests. Period.

Want better student scores in Costa Mesa? Change the students.  That means change the demographics.

If we took all the students from the best performing school in Newport Beach and put them in the worst performing school in Costa Mesa and put the students from that Costa Mesa school in the Newport Beach school, the Costa Mesa school would overnight become the best school and the Newport school would become the worst (based, again, on student test scores, which is how we measure good and bad in schools).

People actually matter when you talk about people, and there is not a one size fits all human.

WHAT'S UP NEXT FOR THE CHARTER ISSUE?

Will the Council try for a special election date in July as one commenter to the CM PRESS suggested?
Will the Council try for some other pre-November date or wait for November?
What will come out of the investigation of the City Clerk?  Legal action?  Depositions? And if there are depositions, who will be pulled in?

Our guess is that we'll be hearing more on this issue in the next few days.

DAILY PILOT ARTICLE ABOUT REBRANDING TRIANGLE SQUARE

This is the latest in umpteen attempts to make Triangle Square work.  We wish the owners well and we hope they succeed, where so many others have failed after the usual happy talk.

However, we see nothing in the above article about addressing the major functional problem of the property: the parking down below in a dank, claustrophobic, gloomy and creepy concrete cavern where the slightest sounds and shadows call up images in the mind that are best reserved for fright movies.
-----------
AND SPEAKING OF THAT AREA OF COSTA MESA...

What's happening with the 19 West sign that is supposed to go on the median directly across from Triangle Square?

The last we heard was that Mayor Bever was going to keep an eye on this project to keep things moving.

  1. CM Press,

Regarding Steve Smith's article. You say it has something to do with our bad schools. The way I read his article its almost entirely about requirements for the next superintendent. Only two sentences even mention problems with some of our schools. You seem to be responding to a prior article.

  2. Steve Smith wrote: "Eleven Costa Mesa schools are on Program Improvement status, meaning there are specific actions that must be taken because they are not meeting various academic goals. A few of these schools are just flat out failing."

Again,by talking about "failng schools" we may miss the point that this is a demographic problem and that a new Superintendent isn't going to be able to solve it, unless the demographics [of the Westside] are changed.
