COLIN FIRTH GETS SAG'S BEST ACTOR AWARD FOR THE KING'S SPEECH
Link

As a SAG member I got a chuckle out of what Firth said when he won, and especially the part about flashing his SAG card to try to get female attention and entry into nightclubs.

Flashing my SAG card never worked for me either, Colin.

"Until today, I would say probably if ever I felt I had a trophy which told me that something's really happening for me, it was my SAG card, you know, to be a part of this extraordinary collective," said Firth, accepting his award.

"Growing up in England, it's not something you expect to see in your wallet, really," he said. "And so it has this glow, and I used to flash it around hoping it would get me female attention, entry into nightclubs ...

"And it didn't, not a bit. I'd like to thank, looking at whose here, I'd like to thank security for letting me into the building," he joked.

CITY COUNCIL MEETING TOMORROW, TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2011
Link to agenda

If the CM PRESS attends, we may ask the Council for answers about the stinkeye investigation, about the Chief Shawkey matter, and why there seems to be so much secrecy involved with our municipal government.

We understand that some matters have to be kept under wraps, but the reality is that just about everything the City does can be kept secret  as personnel matters or attorney/client privilege or attorney work product, and there's a buzz in the community that these rights to keep some things secret are being abused.

WHAT'S GOING ON BEHIND CLOSED DOORS WITH THE EGYPTIAN GOVERNMENT?

We offer some guesses...

We think there's a high probability that President Mubarak is negotiating with the international community for a way to leave Egypt with as much wealth as possible and to find a safe haven in a European country that won't extradite him back to Egypt after a new government is in place.

We think there's a  lower probability that Mubarak will be removed by the military or perhaps be shot.

And, also in our view, we think there's a much lower probability that Mubarak will be able to hang on to power.

Of course, we're just speculating.  It'll be interesting to see how it actually plays out, and we don't think we're going to have to wait much longer.  Just a few days, perhaps.

Maybe you have your own speculations?  Put them up against ours by sending them to us. Please try to keep them short. Thanks.

Link
It looks more and more likely that Mubarak is going to fall within days.  Our guess is that Egypt will then have a weak interim secular government  but that this will fall and be replaced by a more Islamic government.

The CM PRESS doesn't believe that we are seeing a revolution in Egypt in which people are demanding a Western style democracy, but rather a revolution that is rejecting the West and its values.

The type of "democracy" that the U.S. tries to force on peoples around the world, is not always seen as the best form of government.

More recently, we've linked to RT, a Russian news source, for the same reason.

We've also been looking at news sources from England and Ireland, but as of this writing we've not been pleased with the output of the sites we've looked at.  That may change as we continue to scan sites from those two countries.

And, we may be adding links to sites from Germany, Australia and Israel in the near future.

What we don't want to do is provide too many links so that they all get lost in the crowd.

TIDBITS AND HINTS FROM THE UNDERCURRENTS OF COSTA MESA

Bill Lobdell has a couple of interesting tidbits for Costa Mesans in his column in the DAILY PILOT today [HERE].

The first tidbit involves Chief Shawkey and a suggestion that there may be a power struggle going on in the CMPD.  Although neither Lobdell nor the CM PRESS can confirm the exact details of this, we think there's a high probability that this is true.

The CM PRESS's guess about this, based on hints in the undercurrents swirling around the city, and from our own instincts, is that the left-wing clique within the department, which includes a few uniformed officers and at least one non-uniformed employee, is still taking its cues from former high ranking employees of the department who used the department in the past to pursue their left wing agenda and their political/social views.

The second tidbit involves N-MUSD Superintendent Hubbard and Katrina Foley.  Although Foley can't discuss why she voted against the move to put Hubbard on paid leave, Lobdell figures it was because Foley didn't think Hubbard should be paid while on leave.

We think Lobdell got this right and we think Foley is going to need all the support of ordinary citizens that she can get if she's really set herself against the clubby school board.

Back when Foley was on the City Council, we often criticized her for various things that we believed were anti-improvement.  However, we long ago realized that she was a very strong advocate for schools and kids in this city, and we think her move to the school board is a good fit and that she may be able to do some good things for the kids in her new position.

Unfortunately, those who support kids over the school board may have to work hard to get some other new people elected to the board before we see the major changes that are really needed.

We'll be stepping up our coverage of N-MUSD activities this year and we'll be especially watching to see if Ms. Foley finds any allies on the board or whether she's going to remain a voice in the wilderness.

As it stands right now, and in our view, just to be clear about this, allies of Ms. Foley on the school board on some major issues are going to look like friends of Costa Mesa students and parents and those who oppose her are going to look like enemies of students and parents.

Here's a link where you can see photos and names of the school board members.

You will note that we have now added a link to N-MUSD on the right of this page.  Be sure to check it for meeting times.

We need more citizens going to school board meetings and speaking out.

REPORT FROM LAST NIGHT'S PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION MEETING

The CM PRESS suggested to the Commission that they look at how the City is losing money by letting some "non-profit" sports teams use playing fields on school campuses for free while taxpayers have to pay around $ 200,000 per year to rent these fields from the NMUSD.

"Non-profit" just means the organization doesn't make money.  It doesn't mean the organizers, employees and executives of these organizations don't make money.  And, every one of these sports teams that gets to use our fields for free charges their players to play.

So, where does the money go that the players pay?  Into the pockets of the organizers, employees and executives of the sports teams.

Shouldn't some of that money be used to pay for the fields?  We think so.  We want the City to stop charging taxpayers so some people can get free rent on our fields while making money on the deal.

We also told the Commission that if any sports teams let all their players play for free and if they don't overcharge them for uniforms or in other ways hide money going into the pockets of the organizers, employees and executives of the sports teams, then the City might consider giving free use of the fields to the teams.  Barring that, the teams should pay for the use of the fields and not put this on the backs of the taxpayers.

Military budget should be cut. There's too much fat in it.

Why would anyone not want to cut out the fat? A couple of reasons come immediately to mind. Politicians from states with companies that manufacture military hardware don't want those companies to cut back.

And, politicians who are on the inside on intelligence matters know that some of the seeming fat (expensive toilet seats and hammers, for example) didn't really cost hundreds or thousands of dollars each as has been reported in the press.  That's more than likely just creative accounting to hide secret money going into various intelligence operations.

WE WONDER...DOESN'T THE NMUSD CONTRACT WITH HUBBARD HAVE A NO CONFIDENCE CLAUSE?

As we wrote yesterday, Superintendent Hubbard has been put on paid administrative leave. This means he'll be paid his roughly $ 25,000 per month salary while he waits for his trial.

Those defending Hubbard trot out the old 'he's innocent until proven guilty' shibboleth.  Yes, that's true, but this isn't about his guilt or innocence now.  It's about saving taxpayer money and doing the right thing for the taxpayers and the students in the district.

The racy emails and the relationship with a subordinate in Beverly Hills should be enough for the NMUSD board to say they no longer have any confidence in Mr. Hubbard and terminate his contract.

That $25,000 a month should be used for the students in NMUSD.  Remember them?

And, maybe it's time for some real changes on the school board to stop its in-group, private club way of doing things.

OBAMA GIVES TEPID STATE OF THE UNION SPEECH
Link to AP story about last night's State of the Union Speech

Mostly a boring speech delivered poorly. Obama appeared to be chewing gum as he entered the room; maybe it was to wake him up.  It didn't work.

To get things back on track in the U.S. we need some major changes in the way we do things and in our priorities.

We need to get out of the phony wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and we need to send both countries a bill for our service to their present leaders.

We need to re-industrialize the U.S.

We need to shrink government.

We need to stop foreign aid. Citizen tax money should be spent on our own citizens instead of lining the pockets of foreign leaders.

We need to stop all immigration for ten years.

We need to stop the anchor baby scam.

We need to send illegal aliens back to their own country.

We need to rekindle American virtues of self-reliance and a can-do attitude.

AND WHAT ABOUT THE REPUBLICANS?

Most Republicans are coming across as a bloodless group of mumblers and back room numbers crunchers who look like their shoes are too tight and their suits itchy and who have no new ideas.

We see very little leadership in the GOP right now.  New blood is needed, or at least a transfusion.

JUDGE CITES "LACK OF PROFESSIONALISM" IN HUBBARD CASE
Link to  OC REGISTER story

As of  this writing, the OC REGISTER hasn't updated its story to show that the NMUSD has put Hubbard on paid administrative leave.

And, speaking of that paid administrative leave, Hubbard makes about $ 300,000 per year--that's $25,000 per month.

Trials sometimes go on for years. Are the citizens of Newport-Mesa going to have to keep paying Hubbard on an open ended basis or is there some cutoff date in the deal? We don't know the answer, but from our past experience of the private club way the NMUSD seems to be run, we suspect the deal is open ended.

That $25,000 per month could sure go a long way to fix the football field at Costa Mesa High School and to do some other good things for the students in the district.

SEEMINGLY MINOR CHANGES IN THE DNA CODE CAN HAVE MAJOR EFFECTS IN THE COMPLETE ORGANISM

A case in point.  In NOVA's documentary DOGS DECODED you'll learn that Grey Wolves and domesticated dogs share about 99.8% of the their DNA code, are the same species and can easily interbreed.

To try to understand why wolves and dogs seem so different, Hungarian researchers took a group of newly born domestic dog puppies and for 8 weeks gave them a lot of human love and affection.

The researchers then did the same thing with newly born wolf cubs.

If, as some believe, the friendly behavior of domesticated dogs and  the wild, aggressive behavior of wolves is due to nurture rather than nature, one would expect both groups to act the same after the 8 weeks of almost identical human love and affection.

That's not what happened.

Instead of continuing to be friendly to humans like the dog puppies, the wolves showed agression, wouldn't obey commands and in other ways were different and wilder than the dog puppies.

Why?  Because genes are us, And, as we wrote above, very minor changes in the DNA code can have major effects in the complete organism. All that is needed is a change in just a few letters out of the billions of letters in an organism's genotype and you have, well...wolves and dogs.

We sometimes describe this as a being a little like firing a rifle at a target a couple of hundred yards away.  The slightest, hardly felt flinch at the trigger will often cause the bullet to miss the target by yards.

About 90 % of Chinese are Han, and the Han want all to be Han.  The Han comprise the world's largest ethnic group with more than 1.3 billion members of the group--about 20% of all humans.

The CM PRESS has written before about the soft genocide the Han are conducting against Tibet by putting in a high speed rail system that is carrying thousands of Han to Tibet where they are swamping the Tibetan gene pool with Han genes.

The above linked article gives more information about the Han and the visit of the Han Chinese president to the U.S.

AGENDA FOR THE PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION MEETING ON 1/26
Link
The CM PRESS believes that the City Council needs to do a better job of policing Group 1 organizations to ensure they meet all the requirements.  You can read about the Groups, including Group 1, by following the link to Revised Athletic Field Use and Allocation Policy on the agenda (see page 3).

The reason the Council should police them better is because they get free use of the fields on elementary school campuses, but taxpayers (you and us) are paying the NMUSD about $200,000 per year to rent these fields that we then let Group 1 users have for free.

Remember, the Group 1 organizers charge their players to be on the teams.  Shouldn't some of that money pay for the fields and not just go into the pockets of the organizers?

RETIREMENT ANNOUNCEMENT FROM COAST DISTRICT CHANCELLOR CURRIE
[This is written so well, that we decided to put her whole letter up here rather than just a short blurb.]

January 19, 2011

Dear Board of Trustees and Coast Colleges Faculty and Staff:

Change has become the most predictable constant we have encountered, especially during the past two years. It is with much agonizing and heartfelt reflection that I have come to a decision regarding my search for the next chapter of a purposeful life. I will be leaving my post as Chancellor of the Coast District. Indeed, it is a big change for me at a personal level and, also, yet another change for the Coast District.

I believe in the divine plan. It was not a coincidence that our family pilgrimage trip to Israel last June triggered a change in my personal spiritual journey that led me to reorder my priorities and find pathways to a new purpose in serving humanity. My soul has been stirred ever since last summer and a number of signs appeared to let me know the time has come for such a change.

My husband, Mark, has been the wind beneath my wings for the last 30 years and has twice sacrificed his own career for me. Now that his business is soaring and asking for my help, it is, indeed, my turn to support him.

On Christmas Eve, I lost my best friend’s mother whom I also called, “mom.” I have an 87 year old mother who has given 67 years of her life’s sacrifice for her children. There is no way for me to repay her except with a little bit more of my time, which I have not had in years.

I am debt ridden with all the blessings that have been given to me freely by friends, colleagues, and a community of giants upon whose shoulders I stand. I have longed for the time when I can double the speed in which I pay it forward. I would like to start this payment plan before my own time runs out.

Community Colleges have long been the love of my life (besides my family). After more than 30 years of this love affair, I cannot simply close the door on it. I will continue to be involved with community college education and contribute in other ways and by other means. I hope you can forgive me for my timing, but it seems that there is never a good time to leave.

I will stay until the end of this academic year, June 30, so I can complete a few major tasks such as: the District’s Vision 2020 Master Plan, the budget deliberation and development for 2011/2012, and establish revenue generation venues. This will allow the Board to have a balanced tentative budget for approval in June and a successful transition for the next Chancellor.

I will, of course, continue to support the Vice Chancellors and Presidents’ success. They are a very strong team and the District will be in good hands.

It wasn’t easy for me to come to this conclusion, but perhaps sometimes our eyes have to be washed by our tears so we can see a clearer view ahead. Thank you for your understanding and support. I commit to do my very best during the months ahead and pledge to work with everyone to ensure a very smooth transition plan.

Sincerely,

Ding-Jo

CHINA NO. 1 NATION--U.S. CONTINUES TO SINK
Link

The U.S. has been sliding for years and even today, few are willing to acknowledge this and take corrective action.

What have we done wrong?

1. We've imported the Third World in the false belief that genes don't matter and that people are fungible.  This has changed the recipe that made America great.  Visit Detroit or many other once great cities.  They are now at Third World levels.

2. We've deindustrialized our nation in the false belief that America can be a great park and all the dirty factories will be in other countries.

What should we do to change things:

A.  Stop ALL immgration for a decade, and then when we start it up again, only let in people who can contribute to our society at high levels.

B.  Crank up the factories again and start making things.  True value is only generated when one makes something or grows something.  Everything else flows from those. Everyone else lives off what is made or grown in one way or another. Today, America has become a nation of paper pushers and middlemen with very few people making or growing things.  That needs to be changed.

CALLING ALL HOMELESS PEOPLE

Costa Mesa is a great place to be homeless.

You can live for free in the bushes at the west end of 19th Street.

You can eat for free at the Soup Kitchen on 19th Street.

You can also get free food at Lions Park.

You can get free medical and dental care nearby.

And, with the city putting millions of dollars into making nice bike trails, you can ride your bikes to all the charities in safety.

And, the churches (often from other cities) are sending kind compassionate folks to Costa Mesa to help you in every way possible (except they won't take you back to their cities, so don't ask).

Oh, you will have to compete a little with the illegal aliens though, because the kind compassionate folks are also serving their needs in the same areas where you congregate.

A FEW MORE THOUGHTS ON CHANGING THE TITLE OF CITY MANAGER TO CEO

Although most people probably don't think of cities in business terms, the reality is that every city competes with every other city for businesses and productive citizens.

In Orange County, the older inland cities are simply not competing successfully with South County for young, upwardly mobile families.  And it is these families that are the real lifeblood of any top rated community.

Costa Mesa is an older city, but we have an advantage over many inland cities in the fact that we are ocean close and right next to Newport Beach.

We'll still not attract all the young upwardly mobile families that many Costa Mesans would like to see move here, but we'll get some, and if the new City Council fixes the Westside, we'll get many more who will want to live here for our amenities.

One down note on all this is the story we reported Monday about how Irvine is moving ahead with its plan to build 5,000 new homes near the Great Park.  Those homes will pull in lots of young families that might otherwise come to Costa Mesa.

So, we just need to ramp up our game and do a better job of fixing our city and marketing it properly.  Just as you would do if your business had some new competition coming in down the street.

TWO WHITE ENGLISH MOTHERS AND THEIR KIDS NOT ALLOWED INTO PLAY GROUP IN ENGLAND BECAUSE THEY'RE WHITE

In Great Britain, you're not supposed to discriminate based on color (see the second to last line in the linked article), so Whites are discriminated against with transparently flimsy arguments about being the wrong nationality, ethnicity or race to get freebies given to non-White immigrants.

This sort of anti-White discrimination is going on world wide, but so far most Whites just turn the other cheek.  This just allows it to continue and to grow.

"CITY MANAGER" TO BECOME "CEO"?

That's what Councilmember Mensinger suggested last night.

We like the idea.

In fact, years ago when we were just getting involved in Costa Mesa political matters, we had a conversation with City Manager Allan Roeder about what he and everyone else did in City Hall.

Suddenly it dawned on us, and we said: "Oh, you're like a CEO."

Anyway, if  "City Manager" isn't a term of art that is required by law and if "CEO" can be the new title for the job, we think that the new title will send  psychological messages that Costa Mesa is both open for business and that the City is being run in a businesslike way.  Both good things.

HELP US UNDERSTAND...DO YOU SEE A DOUBLE STANDARD HERE? DO YOU THINK THAT a) IS AN INSULT BUT b) ISN'T?

a) Would it be an insult and considered racist if you told a Latino that he's okay because he's like a White man?

b) Would it be an insult and considered racist if you told a White man that he's okay because he's like a Latino?

We bring this up, because back when Steve Mensinger was being considered for appointment to the City Council, a man went to the podium and spoke in favor of Mensinger over McEvoy because, in part [paraphrasing to get to the gist of the comment], Mensinger is like a Latino. This got some applause from the White libs in the audience.

Then, at last night's City Council meeting a woman went to the podium and said that she had spoken at the previous meeting when the Mensinger vs. McEvoy appointment was being discussed and that she had been  in favor of McEvoy

She also said that she had been angry that some high school football players had come to that meeting to speak in favor of Mensinger.

However, she said that she has since realized that those football players were Latino and, because of that, she had now changed her mind about Mensinger [and now supported him].

Oh, she also asked that the City revoke its rule of law city designation.

COSTA MESA TO START A HOMELESS TASK FORCE
TO HELP FAMILIES RECLAIM LIONS PARK--OR IS IT TO HELP THE HOMELESS BE MORE COMFORTABLE IN THE PARK AND COSTA MESA?
[Photo taken by CM PRESS of a  "homeless" bike in front of the downtown library]

At last night's City Council meeting, the Council voted unanimously to start a task force to study chronic homelessness in Costa Mesa.

If you ask stable citizens of Costa Mesa about this, most will probably tell you that the problem is that homeless people have taken over Lions Park and the adjacent Civic Center and library and that people no longer feel safe in taking their children to that area of the city (which is on the Westside, by the way).

They will also probably tell you that the reason there are so many homeless people in that area and the reason their numbers are increasing is because that location is close to all the charities where they can get free food, free dental care, free medical care and more.

However, the idea that this task force is to help stable citizens reclaim the park and adjacent areas and help improve Costa Mesa may not be what the Council has in mind.

The vibe last night seemed to be more one of how the citizens of Costa Mesa can help the homeless.

As you can see from the agenda report [HERE] the proposed task force has many seats on it that are going to those who provide services for the homeless and who many citizens believe are simply acting as "enablers" of the homeless, as one citizen told the Council.

In addition, Mayor Pro Tem Jim Righeimer tried to get the Council to exclude the appointment of five ordinary citizens of Costa Mesa to the task force. Huh? The Council rejected this idea.

Righeimer is also a board member of Mercy House [LINK], whose executive director, Larry Haynes, was also appointed last night to be the task force facilitator.

The CM PRESS told the Council that we thought it odd that Larry Haynes' name suddenly popped up in the middle of the report (pg 3) as the fait accompli "Task Force Facilitator" when there was no indication of how he got that position and there was no resume from Haynes or any other background information in the report about him.

After we spoke, Haynes, who was in the audience, went to the podium and gave a quick oral version of his resume that boiled down to him saying that he's an expert on homelessness.

According to Mercy House's federal tax forms, Mr. Haynes makes $ 103,000 per year helping the homeless.  It is not clear from the agenda report whether or not Mr. Haynes will make any money from Costa Mesa, as we read only that he has agreed to act as the facilitator "on a voluntary basis," (pg 3 of the report) (it doesn't say "unpaid" voluntary basis).

And  under the Fiscal Impact section of the report (pg 4) it says that "There should be no fiscal impact to the general fund other than the Staff and City Attorney's Office time associated with research, analysis and coordination."   (Emphasis added by CM PRESS.  Here again, we're not clear if our tax money from outside the general fund will be funneled into this project.)

Our guess is that the Council may already have the thought in mind to give CDBG tax money (your money) to Mercy House.

So if we're right, it looks like the Council and the administration want you to think this is free because they're not taking money out of your right pocket--no, they're taking it out of your left pocket. It's still your money no matter which pocket it comes out of.

The Task Force has been given 6 to 9 months to complete its work and make recommendations to the City Council.

The CM PRESS tried but failed to get the Council to shorten that time to 3 months, so families could get control of the park and adjacent facilities sooner (we're trying to be optimistic here, just for a minute, and we're pretending  that this Task Force will actually do something to make things better for families and will help improve the Westside and Costa Mesa).

COSTA MESA A GREAT PLACE TO BE HOMELESS

One of the first speakers from the public to address the Council last night told the Council that he had moved here to Costa Mesa because he had heard that Costa Mesa was a great place to be homeless.  He then praised the city for its compassion.

Translation: CALLING ALL HOMELESS, CALLING ALL HOMELESS. COME TO COSTA MESA. COSTA MESA IS A GREAT PLACE TO BE HOMELESS. PASS IT ON.

UPDATE: Here's a link to the OC REGISTER story on the above. You will note that "the one who shall not be named" (as one writer called a certain person who is not to be named) is mentioned by name.
