MAN ATTACKED AND ROBBED ON POMONA SATURDAY AM
Until the slums are removed, our high violent crime rate will remain.
Notice the above linked article in the OCR only describes the perps as "gang types." Now, what do you suppose that means? Hmmmm. How about this: "Hispanic gang types." Isn't that a better definition?
Meanwhile, the Costa Mesa City Council plans to spend millions on improving a bike trail behind some slums on the Westside.
The money would be better spent on removing the slums.
Instead, the Council will encourage more people to use the bike trail, and there will be some initial puff pieces in the local left wing press about how swell the trail is.
Then, watch the trail become abandoned except by gangs after some yuppies are attacked there by the gang members who live in the adjacent slums.
The Costa Mesa City Council has screwed up priorities. You want to fix the Westside? Forget your screwball money wasting rubberized asphalt on Victoria and your yuppie bike trail and start buying up and razing slum buildings.
Destroy the gang habitat and the gang members will move back to Santa Ana.

"The attitude that the city may not be worthy of Righeimer is really an inferiority complex and it has held Costa Mesa back for decades. The inferiority complex manifests itself in writings such as McEvoy’s, in the recurrence of a silly attempt to carve out some sliver, some connection, to the Pacific Ocean, even if, as was once proposed, that path is just 12 inches wide, and in the trashing of the city over the presence of illegal immigrants by, among others, its current mayor."

May 22--The Board of Trustees voted unanimously to appoint Denise Whittaker as Interim President of Orange Coast College. Whittaker will begin as Interim President on July 1, 2009.
“Ms. Whittaker has a great deal of experience in a multi-college district both as an administrator and a faculty member,” said Board President Jim Moreno. “She brings with her an excellent reputation and proven success as a leader and we are confident that as the Interim President she will be a great asset to Orange Coast College and to our District.”
“I am grateful to the Board of Trustees for giving me this opportunity,” Whittaker said. “Having worked in the southern California community college arena for nearly 30 years, and having friends and colleagues at all three of the District’s colleges, I am very much aware of OCC’s reputation for providing outstanding academic and technical education to the communities they serve. Every person I spoke to over the weekend had a connection to OCC and spoke highly of the faculty and their educational experience. I am honored to have been selected for this position and look forward to working with Dr. Currie and the OCC faculty, staff, managers, and students in this transition period.”
Whittaker will serve as Interim President at Orange Coast College while a national search is conducted for a permanent replacement. The Board of Trustees, Acting Chancellor Currie and Whittaker will work together to lead Orange Coast College during a time of District-wide transition and an unprecedented budget crisis.
“Our District is facing many challenges,” Moreno stated. “We know that Ms. Whittaker’s extensive experience will bring stability in leadership to the college as we conduct a search for a permanent president in the coming months.”
Whittaker retired as president of San Bernardino Valley College in San Bernardino in 2007. Under her leadership, the college successfully provided transfer and degree programs to over 12,000 students each semester. Additionally, Whittaker has a great deal of experience in student support services, budget planning and human resources having served as Vice President at both Oxnard College in Oxnard, Cal. and at El Camino College in Torrance, Cal. Whittaker has a Master’s degree in Counseling from California State University, Los Angeles.
Whittaker is known nationally as a progressive leader and has served as an advisory board member to the National Center for Community and Educational Partnerships and currently works as an educational consultant to the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission and Fairmont State University.
“I am appreciative that Denise is willing to bring her leadership skills and experience to Orange Coast College,” said Dr. Ding-Jo Currie, Acting Chancellor. “The college and the District will be well served by her leadership during the six-month transition period. I look forward to working with Denise closely as we confront our fiscal challenges ahead.”
The Coast Community College District is headquartered in Costa Mesa and is the ninth largest district in the country. The District’s three colleges - Coastline Community College in Fountain Valley, Golden West College in Huntington Beach and Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa -serve over 60,000 students each year providing traditional degree and transfer opportunities, career and technical training and community programs.

COSTA MESA SHOWS ITS LACK OF FRUGALITY
Wants to spend $1.7 million on beautifying a rarely used bike trail.
Say, why not put down some rubberized asphalt?
The only stimulus this provides to our economy is to the wallets of out of town contractors and city staff who will make busy work for themselves in supervising this. Don't expect to see your out of work neighbors out there with shovels on this shovel ready project.
If the City Council were serious about improving the City, they'd use this money to buy up and raze some slum buildings near the bike trail. Crime would drop as a result and the few bicyclists who use the trail would be safer.
Most residents of Costa Mesa probably don't even know where this bike trail is located.
If you want to see it, just drive south on Harbor near Fair. As you get to the end of the golf course, which will be on your right, you'll see what looks like an alley at the end of the chain link fence. That's the bike trail in question.

If you watched the City Council meeting last night, you saw Councilmember Bever sarcastically mentioning not using rubberized asphalt in some alley repairs, because Bever doesn't want cars speeding in alleys.
"Where appropriate" is the problem with using it on Victoria west of Placentia.
You may recall that three guys were killed on Victoria about a year ago in a high speed accident at a curve in the road that should probably be called Dead Man's Curve. They were going too fast, came to the curve, centrifugal force took over and they hit a telephone pole. That's just one of many accidents on that street.

A SIMPLE GUIDE TO THE ISRAELI/PALESTINIAN QUESTION AND WHY ISRAELI PRIME MINISTER NETANYAHU, WHO IS NOW MEETING WITH PRESIDENT OBAMA, WON'T AGREE TO A TWO STATE SOLUTION AS PROPOSED. LINK
The difficulty turns on a word: "Jewish."
The Israelis want the Palestinians to agree to a two state solution that guarantees Israel's right to exist as a "Jewish" state, and the Palestinians don't want to sign such an agreement unless the word "Jewish" is removed.
In other words, the Jews want Jewish and Israel to be synonymous and the Palestinians, who might be okay with Israel existing as a secular state, aren't buying it.
Here's why. The Palestinians have a much higher birthrate than the Jews in Israel and many Palestinians live in Israel.
Those Palestinians who take a long view of history figure that in time they'll be able to take over Israel by doing nothing more than having more babies than the Jews.
Remember, Israel is billed as the only democracy in the Middle East. And, what do we know about democracies? The majority rules.
If an agreement is signed without the word Jewish in it, Israel may still exist in the future but in name only because without a guarantee that it will remain a Jewish state it may in fact be a Palestinian state if the Palestinians become a majority of the voting citizens in Israel.
The Jews understand the demographic problem they face and want to head it off at the pass by having solid agreements, recognized under international law, that Israel shall always be a Jewish state.
Much can flow legally from such an agreement with just that one word "Jewish" if it is in the agreement.
If the Palestinians sign an agreement with that word in it, they'll never be able to take over Israel from within, as a whole series of related laws can be enacted by Israel to, for example, prevent non-Jews from voting in Israeli elections since this may, as outlined above, lead to Israel not remaining a Jewish state, which in something of a round robin sort of reasoning must always remain Jewish.
Therein lies the rub.

AFTER RESTRUCTURING, GM PLANS TO BUILD MORE CARS OUTSIDE U.S.
From the Washington Post
Have we become the Eloi?
The U.S. needs a common sense revival. We're not going to survive as a nation unless we re-industrialize and actually start making things here again.
The false belief that the U.S. can be a nation of paper pushers, middlemen and executives while all the fingernail dirtying jobs will be done in foreign nations, is a very basic error in thinking.
You may remember that in H. G. Wells' book The Time Machine that humanity had evolved into two species.
The Eloi lived on the surface of the earth in park-like settings and were dissolute and frail, while the Morlocks lived underground and did all the work to keep the earth park-like and the Eloi fat and happy.
The Eloi had one purpose in life: to be food for the Morlocks.

LEVEL OF SERVICE SCAM
One of the cliches that we're hearing about why the City Council can't make necessary cuts to their spending is because they have to "maintain the level of service that residents currently enjoy."
What a bunch of crap.
When we see ten cops standing around doing nothing but talking about their personal lives when a violation is taking place within their plain view and when not one of them will even say anything to those who are in violation and when their boss at the police station refuses to have them do anything and gives wise guy answers to a citizen who has complained about the violation, we know something is wrong.
When we hear that firefighters are "providing a service" by charging apartment owners to "inspect" fire sprinkler heads in their apartment buildings at $4.00 per head, we know something is wrong.
When we see pick and shovel city employees show up to replenish dog poop bags at a park in brand shiny new trucks, we know something is wrong.
When we see that most of our cops (and presumably firefighters as well) get paid so much that they don't have to live in Costa Mesa with all our violent crime and other problems like the residents who are paying them, we know something is wrong.
When we hear a couple of City Council members pontificate about how Washington or Sacramento are taxing citizens too much, but who then refuse to cut taxes, fees and expenses right here in Costa Mesa where they have the power to actually do this, we know something is wrong.
When we see the City Council approve spending millions of dollars on tearing out wind sown plants in our "natural" Fairview Park and replace them with plants that can't live there naturally unless they have constant and intensive care by city employees, we know something is wrong.
When we see that our violent crime rate has jumped more than 35 percent in a year, and we're told that we have a high level of service and that we have to keep paying more and more for this high level of service, we know something is wrong.
The fact is that local government is full of fat cats who refuse to cut expenses and who want to just charge residents more and more to pay the fat cats.
A local government is supposed to serve the citizens of a city; not the other way around.
What's next?
Maybe the fire department will charge residents a water usage fee when they put out fires?
Perhaps they'll put a meter on each fire hose and demand a credit card when they respond to fires?
How about a charge for every foot of fire hose that is unravelled to "provide a service."
Just as work expands to fill the time allotted to it, so too does government expand to consume all the money it can take.
Enough is enough! Stop all the stupid talk City Council and do the job you were hired to do.
